Title: Spring Permit - Monroe - Winner's Lounge
Post by: luvmystang67 on March 11, 2015, 07:14:46 AM
Well, which fellow Hunt-WA members do I have to assist/compete with in the Monroe unit?  We can share intel and hopefully bring that success rate of this hunt up a little.  The last time I drew there were 2 bears taken in the entire season.  It'd be great to see at least 10 of the 25 tags filled.

D-Rock, I know you didn't draw, so please stay out of the winner's lounge.  There's a place for you, it just not here (but the bar would be a good place to start). :chuckle:

I've got a pdf of the map area from a few years ago that I'm trying to find to give a head start on the planning.  Surely some of the area has changed, but I bet most of it is pretty dang close.

Note: You're not allowed to drive across the Spada dam, even if your key opens the gate.  Also, the alarms scare bears anyway.

Thanks guys. That will all be very helpful.

As far as I understand it the process is I kind of wait around until I am contacted about getting a key and the map for the area. After that its time to start putting the miles on.

That has been my experience in the past.

For now, you can familiarize yourself with the map and the gate entrance points and use some aerial maps to familiarize yourself with the road system if you aren't already.  Keys wont work at EVERY gate location, but it could be worth driving around and locating the gates visually so you know where your options are (if you had time for that).

Usually the bears aren't out until mid May, but this year they could be out earlier.  If you had to find a time to concentrate your time on actual hunting it'd be in the second half of the season, not the first.   :twocents:

Gallion....I believe that there will be a meeting in Mill Creek. You should def attend. They give out packets, dashboard placards, and gate key/combo. They give some info regardign damage areas and had timber folks there as well. In 2013 it was a key, no deposit. Last year it was a combo for pad locks. Soon as you can, get out and start driving and walking around and exploring. This is no slam dunk...In 2013 I know of 4 tags filled...I filled one, Turner89 and his boy filled one each, and I don't know who did the 4th. Grassy old roads and openings are the ticket I believe. If you find peels that is good and all, but, that means the bears HAVE BEEN, not are there. Usually lots of good info being shared about the Monroe unit.

Yeah, I haven't had very good luck with bears returning to peels, usually it just means you're a day late and a dollar short.

I will make sure to be at that meeting. Since I live some what local I will be hunting as much of the season as possible. Only down side is that ill be in Costa Rica for 10 days around memorial day weekend. Sounds like that's the better part of the season, but ill have to work around it. I'm hoping to do at least 2 nights a week after work and then as many weekends as possible.

I really appreciate every ones helps and suggestions so far.

Lofty goal, welcome.    AND THEN THERE WERE 3 (Hunt-Wa ers)

I actually thought Hunt-WA would have more of the take than this, but 3 is better than none.  And, at least D-Rock didn't get one.

Those are some daunting numbers. I wonder how many days and how much effort the people who drew the tags actually put in.

Either way its not going to change my efforts. I've been hoping to draw this tag for 3 years now. I'm going to put in as much effort as I can. Especially since it will be my first bear.

Most that fill tags hunt one area a lot. I know when Turner, his son, and I filled tags there were on our home turf. Spent a lot of time driving, walking, and learning. Then, boom, one morning bear is down. I think it is very hard to pattern these bears or rely on proven areas like fall berry patches. I think covering ground, often on foot, and looking for those fresh grassy areas can pay off. One of the big boys last year.....I believe it was a Skagit bear, was shot just along the road munching grass. Get out early, spend all you can, then if you get a good feeling about an area or see some peels/scat hunt that area hard.

I happen to have a Birthday coming up at the end of the month and am thinking about asking for a couple trail cams. Couple question. Are there certain types of areas I should look for to place the cams? grassy roads? swamps? clear cuts? Second do you guys have recommendation for trail cams? I'm not thinking anything top of the line, just a good camera. I'm ok with refurbished or used in good condition too.

By far last year I found that walking grassy roads SLOWLY worked the best where I found sign.  I also set a chair on a few roads to watch and relax where I found sign.  I was lucky.  I hunted almost every other day until I tagged out.
The most important thing I learned was that If you shoot, shoot again fast as you can.   Don't count on the first shot, even if it hits the ground

I just returned my 2 person tree stand   :yike:

ONLY because i got another one for cheaper.  I'm thinking about buying a backup, just in case.  A 2 person tree stand for $70 is hard to beat.

D-Rock is just bitter because the last time he shot a bear on his own (without my firearm's assistance and hunting guidemanship) was before he met me in 2012.  He knows hes nothing with out me.

With that being said, he's one h*ll of a bear corpse packer for being a little guy and I'd gladly have him on any hunt.

My dad drew Monroe area. This will be our first spring bear we've done.  Really Looking forward to the experience!

Glad to hear Griz, I think thats good enough to call it 4 Hunt Wa members.  Not bad.  Maybe we should get together mid season for a drink and to talk about how things are going.   :dunno:

To address the last note on here, between D-Rock and myself we have slung a lot of bullets at bears.  If I have learned anything from our together adventures, it is that you REALLY need to keep shooting until you see them down and even if they do go down, be sure you keep the gun ready on them just in case they pop back up again.  They're tough as nails and tracking them in the dark is terrifying.  I really want to bring my 6.5 Grendel out, but I think bigger bullets are preferable to smaller ones, even in rapid succession.  Therefore, I'll be bringing my .375 out and keep my .45 on my side with a flashlight mounted for personal protection when I inevitably end up tracking one in the dark with D-Rock (thanks buddy).

Two bears, two bullets, total tracking time between the two: 2 minutes, total distance traveled: 12 feet.

You fellas need to sling a little less and make the one you do count  :chuckle: :dunno:

Stang is right....D-rock can only kill elk ( and deer) , for bear, he is nothing without Stang. Can't believe the texts I get sometimes.....sheesh.

Drink mid season? Please.....before! Gotta look at maps, talk about past bears, plan!!!! C'mon.

. Lol h20.  I assure you I am not out slinging bullets.  I shoot quite often.  I am simply saying take another shot if given, bears are tough, and it sucks to have one get away, but it happens and no one is proud of that.
On the other hand I did finish the season with two bears tagged, and a cougar

I also drew in 2012 and burned a lot of fuel.  I did end up getting one.  I like driving around though so I'm not super upset about the fuel expense.  I was super excited because it was the first bear I'd ever even seen in the woods alive.

If you guys who drew, or guys that just want to hang out and share info on the up coming hunt, you can do it here and support a good cause.

There is a fund raiser on March 21 at the Summit Brewery 1830 Bickford Avenue - Snohomish, WA on March 21. They are introducing a new beer, Freedoms American Pale Ale. It goes from 12:00 noon until 10:00 pm. Come on out and enjoy a beverage or two, not enough to impair your driving of course, and help out a good cause. All proceeds from beer will go to the SFS org.

Pick a time that you all want to meet, bring your maps, pic's, other info and support a great cause. It's a win win for all. I will see yo there.

Little trick I've been doing is taking one of my dead cams and mounting it normal then putting the working one up high. You'll get your shots and maybe catch the theif too.

You can pick your packet up anytime after the meeting...same location.

There have been some posts regarding full mounts on cubs. I believe one was kind of curled up and fit on the shelf, the other was laying on the floor and made for a good conversation starter as people came in. I believe both were mounts made from somewhat of a mercy killing where hunters found a dead sow with a living cub.

Everything I saw was grass until they started peeling trees about mid May.

I didn't really think calling would work well in the spring due to them grazing on grasses etc. evidently I was wrong.

We went out Opening afternoon. Saw some scat but no bears. Just a couple deer.

Last time I had the tag I was doing some cub distress calling. Trying to get that baby waling poor pitifull sounds. Though I was doing ok then heard some sticks breaking. I knew there was a sow with two very small cubs in the area. I shut up, sat tight. I could hear them moving through the reprod on my right and she was snapping teeth and the cubs were bawling. It was spooky and very intense. There was a small clearning about 30 yards in front of me and I thought they may come out. I had my rifle up on the sticks for practice as I wasn't planning on pulling the trigger. First cub came out, stared right at me, second one came out, followed suit, then both and unseen momma went outta there like cannon balls. Very intense!

I would for sure do some calling. Get those boars fired up with cub distress! I bet there is a book around here somewhere that will talk about calling in the spring...... :chuckle:

Went up last night in the rainstorm with D-rock and dinker.  Saw some deer, a single grouse, no bears or peels.  While they may be awake some places and actively waking, many of our favorite peel spots revealed nothing and we didn't find any piles of bear poo.

Still, it was nice to get out and burn some fuel.

Question on the cubs for the masses, those guys look pretty big.  I have to assume they're not this years cubs and will be peacin' out here pretty quick.  Do they hang around momma for a few weeks before they branch off on their own or will these ones be with her all summer?

We got out last night and started off crappy.  Some ahole stole my camera.  I had it 12ft up a tree.  Looks like they used a axe and cut the strap.  *censored*s!  Either a PUD guy, timber guy, another permit holder, or someone that walked it quite a ways.  Either way it sucks.  $149 down the drain.  First one stolen so it really chaps my arss!

Oh well....moving on.  We set up in a clear cut and called for about an hour with nothing.  Just not in the right spot.   What are all your thoughts on areas to set up?  Are open clear cuts ok, or should we be more in the timber?

Title: Re: Spring Permit - Monroe - Winner's Lounge
Post by: luvmystang67 on April 30, 2015, 09:51:10 AM
I think I would try calling on a grassy road that has clearcuts nearby and thicker junk around it.  The bears don't have a ton of reason to be in the clear cuts right now, and if they are you'd be able to see them when you show up.  I think if it were me I'd check the clear cuts, verify no bears, find a grassy road with 15 year timber on each side and blast from the road into the timber and see if you can get one to walk out.

I've never had success bear calling, but that it what I would do if I did right now.

Hoping to go out tonight to give it another shot.

Also, you eventually get to the point where you put trail cameras in places where you hope even people wont find them.  I've got python locks on all of mine and I bolt them to the tree with a lock box now.  I've had 2 stolen.  The first one hurts the most (along with the unknown about what footage it may have captured that you didn't get to see).  I haven't had one stolen in a while, but in the general bear area I've had two taken.

Who is available tonight to help me pack out when I shoot one?  Willing participants must have a side arm and flash light to track wounded bears if my history is any indication of the future.  No bigger rush than tracking wounded black bears in the dark.  Its like those nightmares where a ghost is around but you can't see it and it wants to get you.

This happens every year, but I'm starting to hate bears again this year.

I've seen some peels and poop, people might say that bears had been there.  I think someone is messing with me and is leaving them around the woods like an Easter egg hunt just to watch me burn gas.

Going to change the oil in the car and start up my new $299 generator today and then go hit it. Might go check the index gate... just because I haven't been up there yet.  Has anyone checked the small area near mt loop hwy?

there are peels and skat, just have to get out of your truck and adventure in spots that look good.... personally this is not my style of hunting.... got the high country blues here>>>---> jungle bears are a tough gig.

I spent the good chunk of the weekend out hunting. Found one new spot with a good number of peels that happens to be right next to a giant berry field. If nothing else I think i know where i will be sitting on August 1st. Other than that I moved one of my cams and walked some old roads. I'm finding spots with a good number of peels, just haven't been able to stumble on a bear. Oh and to top it off the one cam i had out that was getting regular bear activity hasn't had one in front of it in almost 2 weeks now. not sure what happened.

Closest I got this weekend was a fresher pile of bear poop and some old tracks (thanks Dinker).  I get the feeling as the season progresses we're going to see a lot more evidence of where they're concentrating.

Its hard for me to hunt in places where I could hunt in August because I feel like having the key, I need to take advantage of the area.  I've been places that I will NEVER walk to, I promise.  Especially due to lack of wildlife (where are the deer?!?).

I'm still pretty confident, maybe I shouldn't be.

I've taken YEARS off of the life of my truck driving the crappy roads and burned through 1 t-rex worth of gas so far.

Don't get discouraged, there are bears out there. If you want to save on gas, get out and walk more. Follow some game trails or the nasty looking overgrown roads. I know a real good spot that I hunted a few years ago on the spring hunt. You will need a small blind or be able to sit motionless with lots of bugs. It is real brushy but there are a bunch of peels along a swamp. Let me know if you want me to show it to you. There were 8-10 peeled trees in a very small area.

Well it was close. Coming around a corner in the road there was a bear running away from me. By the time I got stopped, out, and loaded up it was off the road and into the brush. Much to my surprise i couldn't out run it up the hill to ever get another look at it. I was exploring a new area and seemed like a pretty decent spot to find bears. Now i just need to find one i can actually get a shot off at.

Yea, it certainly made for some excitement to the night. Ill be back out tonight to start exploring the area a little more. I found a bunch of game trails into those trees the love to peel and old peels so hopefully I can find a spot where they like to hang out.
Title: Re: Spring Permit - Monroe - Winner's Lounge
Post by: gallion_t on May 08, 2015, 08:26:22 AM
went back out last night and explored the area. Found one decent spot in the woods that might be worth setting up and calling. After that I went over to another area and stopped on a landing to glass. Saw another bear on a road down below but it was a little further than I was comfortable shooting so i quickly made my way around and to the road below and walked it hoping the bear was still feeding on the grass. Unfortunately by the time i got there he was gone. So what I've concluded so far is either:

1) they are starting to move more and the hunting should start picking up
2) I am starting to understand how to hunt them a little better and spend my time looking the correct areas
or
3) I have just gotten really luck the last 2 days.

I feel option 3 is probably the case with maybe a little bit of option 1 in there. Hopefully it all comes together here soon.

I dont plan on giving up until ones in the truck or the season is over. I cant wait until my call shows up. It would have been really handy last night. It was only 10-15 minutes from the time i saw the bear until i was standing where i saw it. Couldn't have gone far so it would have been nice to try to lure it back out into the open.

seen fresh skat from the river bottoms up to 2000 feet in el. the two i have seen were up higher. still not seen really any bear tunnels like usual in grass etc....wich seems odd cuz all the skat is grass filled that i have seen so far. berries look like they will pop soon in some spots, hard green berries on some, flowers still on most others. still looking for the right skunk cabbage area, none yet had any evidence of a bear. been beating brush looking for a spot a boar calls home till its time to follow the food up.

Well I've had quite a night so far.  I was not really feeling lucky but thought I'd give it a shot.  Checked some of my favorite clear cuts and right before dark located a bear. Fortunately for her, she had reproduced last year and had 2 cubs in tow. As I was driving back, pleased with my evening, I got a flat. Which was fine because after my flat the other day I was ready with a floor jack and two spares. Except, the spares that I thought would fit my Chevy half ton truck are somehow a smaller hole pattern, even though they are both 6 lug. They are from the Cadillac version of the trailblazer I think. So now I'm stuck up behind lake roesiger, waiting for drocks cousin, dinker, for a spare of his. Thankfully I have cell service to keep me company and to get help. Two blown tires in a week? It's like they're trying to make this road as impassible as possible 😒

Okay, some thoughts from last night, now that morning is here.

1) I saw a bear, they exist, it was a very average bear and would've done just fine.  The cubs were cute to watch and hopefully I get rewarded by one of those running across me when they're grown (and huge).

2) I've got a bear on my camera, different road, same general area.  Does this look like a sow to you?  The face seems to say sow to me, but I'm not great at bear ID.  Size is always hard, but it looks to be on the + side of average.

3) Lets talk tires/wheels for a second.  For all you "old timers" on here, you don't need to tell me how dumb I am.  I've got it.  Now I'm trying to help others be not dumb.

When you see 2009 tahoe tires on a 1998 chevy pickup, that does not mean the 1998 pickup tires fit the 2009 tahoe.  Similarly, not all GM 6 lugs are created equal.  The 6 lug rims on the trailblazer have a smaller hole pattern than the 6 lugs on the yukon, even though they sort of seem like they should be the same.  Now lets talk tire size.  Looking at 2009 tires on older cars, I assumed that if anyone showed up with a chevy wheel from 1992 to now, i'd be fine, even though the old wheels were 16" and I have 17".  Well, with my "super performance rear disc brakes" (stock), the 16" rim does not fit over my caliper.  I will say, that we were able to turn the steel 16" rim around and mount it inside out and crawl home, and yes the hub was in full contact with the wheel, I wasn't just running on studs.  So, boys and girls, check your spares before you get in there, and just because you see tires go one way, doesn't mean they'll go the other.  Had I not had the z71 brakes or just had drums, it may not have been a problem at all.

A biggest thanks to Dinker, but also Sled and D-Rock as well for offering or helping to put me in contact with help.  Couldn't have made it without you guys, especially Dinker.  Sled is a great example of why I love this forum.  I'm constantly impressed by the generous offers and selflessness of others towards people they don't even know.  Thanks Hunt-WA and those individuals.

Well, I just bought new ones at discount tire and got their full replacement warranty for the life of the pro-rated warranty, so I think I'll be getting new tires, or at least patched, but i kind of want a second spare for the remainder of this season.  That road SUCKS.  I think every time they grade it it gets worse.

New electronic call showed up last night. Thinking about head out tonight and testing it out. Any suggestions for what sound to use this time of the year? The sounds i have are:

Sow In Heat, Sow Grunts, Cub Distress, Growls, Fawn Distress, Coyote Howls, Jack Rabbit, Cottontail, Woodpecker, Rodent Squeaks

I was thinking either fawn in distress or cub in distress, but feel like sow in heat could work as well.

Quick +1 for discount tire.  Both tires were destroyed.  Because I bought the $20 full warranty thing on all tires, they were replaced for free.  I have to buy the $20 deal again, but not bad for 2 new tires.  Would've cost me $280 before tax and other fees otherwise.

I challenge your tires to this road...

Its sharp shale on top of hard packed base.  Its like knives sitting on concrete facing every which way and I'm driving over them...  $20 a tire is starting to add up though... along with gas.

Just giving you a hard time.

I'm not sure I know anything about grading roads, but it seems to me that you're not going to have a whole lot of luck grading a road that is hard packed 3" shale... Those things are like knives sitting on top of assault.  It doesn't seem that bad, but two flats on brand new tires within a week are what I'm looking at as evidence.

I'm more irritated that when I bought the tires.. I was like "how about those 10 ply tires... I drive a lot of forest roads" and they said "no, that is way overkill for your truck and what you're doing".  Well, they had to replace what were 2 basically new tires that would've normally cost me $280 with their warranty program.  I'm not sure if this hurts me more or them more.  I'm now a Discount Tire fan, aside from not buying the tires that I knew I should have bought...

Up on top the road is fine, the first couple miles up the hill are pretty bad.  Need a few more log trucks going up and down to pack it down, problem is the logging trucks up top are going out the other direction, so there's not much traffic in my problem area.

Taking the girlfriend out tonight, we'll see how much hunting gets done.

Went out last night and walked some roads and checked the one came i had out that direction. Nothing on the came. Went and walked the last road of the night and there were fresh peels everywhere. couldnt have been more than a day or so old. Set up and did some fawn in distress calls for a little bit with no luck. Walked about 30 yards to check a clear cut and there was a bachelor group of 4 bucks. 2 that were already trying to fork and 2 that were still spikes. Sadly no bears, but at least there was a bunch of sign.

Oh and I made it out of there without a flat. the road seems to be getting a little better than it was a week and a half ago, but still not great.

Stang....good luck tonight. Try and get a little hunting done.

Gallion...been back to the flamingos or rocks? I'm thinking of heading out Sunday to do some yote calling and cam checking by the rocks.

Well....I'll be able to give you a rocks/flamingo report. My plan is to walk in early am, set up on the rocks and use my decoy and let the caller do its thing. I'll check the cards and call/text with any recent bear activity.

I think the waiting and watching is valuable.  Its amazing how loud they are.  I think if its quiet (low wind), you can look over a clearcut for 15 minutes and just listen.  Bears are just not great at being quiet.  I guess they're about as clumsy as we are in a clearcut (big feet, big stomachs).  The ones I saw the other day in the cut were super noisy.  Makes me more confident in a 15 minute clearcut sit.

This differs from deer and elk where they can be napping in a clearcut and then wake up from seemingly nowhere and are right in front of you.   :twocents:

Saw one tonight with my girlfriend. Didn't have a fantastic shot and it had rubbed its butt and was <150 lbs. Let that one live for another day. Hopefully I don't regret it mid June. The lock at Monroe camp road wasn't working right so we had to change plans. Anyone get that lock to work tonight?

It was there and looked like it ought to work.  Tried the code about 10 times, tried it backwards just in case... rolled the wheels all the way around... nothing.  Let me know if anyone heads up there today with success.

Thanks,

Someone found one of my cams and gave it the bird....  :chuckle:

Not sure if it was a friendly joke or someone who would've stolen the cam if it hadn't been locked down.

Either way, there wasn't anything on that one so I moved it.

As far as bears go, I went out last night.  Saw one old buck that didn't look like he'd make it to the fall.  Must have no teeth left and sounded like he was hacking.  Starvation must be a heck of a way to go.  Going to head out again tonight and see how I can do.  The lock on Monroe Camp is a little shady and I'm afraid that I might not be able to get out, so might be headed somewhere different.  Last night I avoided Monroe Camp because I didn't want to get locked in.

I'm getting the itch though, next one I see might get the bullet, regardless of size (no, I'm still not shooting a sow with cubs, dont worry).

went out last night and checked my cam that has been out. Has what appears to be 6 different bears on it. 3 different sized singles and then a sow with 2 cubs. They seem to be pretty streaky through that spot. Had bears pretty solid for about 2 weeks, then nothing at all for 2 weeks, bears for a week, then nothing has been back in about a week.

After checking that cam i ran over to Cambels ground and did some looking around. Saw one nice sized bear with a good coat... about 100 yards from a bait barrel. Needless to say he lived to see another day. After that I walked a couple old roads and glassed some cuts with nothing. I did find a promising place to put out the other cam. Hopefully when I get back from vacation both cams will have bears on them regularly and I can sit on them and have one come in.

Story:

I feel like this story is a little less exciting than some, so I'll drag it out a little.

I've spent a lot of days up in the woods.  Most of them are up behind the gate at the end of Monroe Camp Rd.  I really didn't see a lot of activity early in the season.  Just one set of fresh peels and I can count on one or two hands the number of poo piles I saw.  I had one bear on my cam in my usual fall hunting spot, but pretty slim pickins.

I spent a lot of evenings after work up in the woods, D-Rock came on many of them.  Dinker was there for one or two.  My girlfriend came on one.  Had a good time looking around, saw some strutting grouse which was pretty cool.  Saw some people stealing rocks in a Subaru... but I figured they were so terrified when they saw me they'll probably not be doing that again (who steals rocks?).  I bought the extended tire warranty at Discount tire and used it ($280 worth of new tires on that warrant for $20 a tire).  Thanks to Dinker and D-Rock for helping me out of some tight spots a few times on that road, which is better now, probably in large part to me.

The first bear I saw was a sow with cubs, way back on the Monroe Camp gate about 15 miles or so.  It was a real pretty clearcut, fun to watch them.  The second bear I saw I assume was a boar.  I saw it with my gf while hunting towards the north end of Lake Roesiger at a different gate.  We had a wine and movie night planned and were on a huge hill.  I opted out of shooting that one due to the significant rub on its butt and implications for my relationship.  I was beginning to regret not shooting that one, but hoped the bear gods would look down on me and give me an opportunity at something larger as a result of my patience.

Bring in... last night.  D-Rock and I went up the Monroe camp road again.  They've recently blocked off many of the clearcuts I used to check by car.  There was one walk that I hadn't done yet but wanted to try up there.  We walked probably a half mile or so in and out and saw more piles of bear poo than I had seen the entire year.  I REALLY expected to see whatever bear was living there.  I was a little sad as we walked out and back to the truck.  I told D-Rock, "you know how you always want to recheck places you've already seen bears, even though they're never really in the same spot twice... I'm going to do that to you".  We drove back to where I'd seen the sow with the cubs and I was explaining to him where I was and pointing to where I had seen her.  At the end of my finger I spotted a bear!  NO WAY!  Pretty much in the same spot. (Yes, saw him from the truck).  Glassed it quickly and assumed it was probably the sow with cubs again... but I couldn't find the cubs.  It didn't look very big.. and then it would come out of the grass and look okay.  I figured it was time and had D-Rock record the shot on the video camera.  I walked up the road and found a good rest and waited for this guy to pop out.

You would think it would be hard for a bear to hide in a wide open clearcut, but that is probably the same reason we thought he was small, the vegetation is just thick this time of year and bears just aren't that tall at the back.  He walked out and gave me a broadside shot at probably ~100 yards.  I stuck my 123 grain 6.5 Grendel AMax through the heart and out the other side.  He tumbled, got up, ran 40 yards and expired.  I did fire an additional hail mary as he was running, but missed and it turns out it was unnecessary.

Fortunately there were roads above and below this clearcut, but the bear was too big to haul out on a stick like our usual neanderthal method.  Skinned it out in the field and quartered it up for the short haul back to the truck (only about 200 yards through a clearcut and downhill).  Still, a minor pain.

I would've preferred it died on the road, why don't animals understand road hunting better? :chuckle:

Pretty good bear, very glad I waited.  Its at home in the meat cooler and the hide and head are in the freezer.  Has a nice fluffy coat and will probably just tan this one as I have a shoulder mount and a rug already in process.

Thanks:

D-Rock - for helping haul, holding legs, videoing, fixing flats, staying up late, bringing me bug spray when bear cleaning, taking photos and general love and support  :o

Dinker - for saving my butt when I had a flat and two spares that didn't fit  (this is huge)

Learning:

You may disagree, but this is what I'm taking as mental note for myself

1) There are too many roads to simply walk grassy roads looking for spring bears.  Most grassy roads didn't even have any poop on them.  I don't love this method for the spring season

2) Bears in clearcuts are not like deer.  They don't hide and stand up after 2 hours of watching.  They move, they're noisey.  They have big feet and are short.  You'll hear them.  You don't need to watch a clearcut for hours like you do for deer and elk, all you need is a quiet evening and cup your ears and listen.  If you dont see anything for 15-20 minutes, move on.

3) There's no rhyme or reason to where a bear really wants to be during the spring.  Everyone I saw wasn't even eating, they were just roaming around, seemingly in continuous motion, being curios or something.  The places they were didn't even have food....

4) When you see bears somewhere, there might be other bears that like the same place.  This seems to be true for this small sample size and the road D-Rock and I call the "Bear Road" in our Fall location.  There have been like 5 bears killed on the quarter mile Bear Road.  Nothing super special about it, except that bears congregate there.

5) You need to aim further forward and higher than you think you do, especially if you're used to shooting deer.  I tried to aim higher and further forward than I really would have naturally liked to do (deer/elk hunter style) and I hit the heart...  Maybe thats just my way of coping, but it seems to work and hold true for me.  Every time I aim like i'm shooting deer or elk, I hit too far back and low.

From DFW, 7 bears have been killed at Skagit so far, and this is the first Monroe one.

Lol nobody knows how much these things weigh. It's petty big. I'm going to say 200+ but I have no idea if that + represents 5 lbs or 50 lbs.  I'll weigh pieces when I cut it up but that will be dehydrated some and I'll never have the guts back. I would like to be better at judging them. The black fur adds a mystery factor.

When I get a chance to work on it a little.  Maybe Sunday or early next week, I have class all weekend and am doing assignments for that and I've got a bear to cut up... 8)

Don't get too excited though, if you've ever seen anyone shoot a bear from on top of a clearcut, this is about that exciting...  Its  not super far, it doesn't roll far, and it runs out of the picture behind a hill.  I give it a B- on "Excitement of Hunt".  The part you miss is how excited i was when I walked up on it and realized how big it was!

Hanging weight, no head, was ~147 or so with my hanging scale, after a few days of dehydrating in the meat cooler.  Not sure what factor you guys use to go from hanging weight to live weight estimates.

I know for Pork we used to say you lost 30% from live to hanging, beef 40% and lamb/sheep 50%.

Possibly not being able to see over your dash and not spotting if first. I don't know. I'll take a crappy shaky vid over none at all so I guess he was good to have along after all.

Prior to this DRock and I were 2/2 in chasing my bears in the dark through thick brush with personal defense weapons in hand and spotting at under 20'.  One was fortunately dead... one wasn't  :yike:

Hence my new approach to bear hunting... shoot until they stop moving and even then don't trust them.  That is why you hear the second shot... :sry: (a miss)

Great job you two. I love these kinds of video's, they show what really happens. I will take a shaky home made video of people I know or at least partially know from the site any day. Like someone else said, you captured true emotions, it shows from your actions that you really care. I give it an A.

I give D-Rock a B-.  Thats a 2.7 GPA.  A little better than trying to do it myself.

I like how you put it in the pets and animals category. I can just imagine someone trying to watch videos of cats and stumbling on this.

That is YouTube's own classification.  I didn't select it.  I also made it unsearchable, so you basically have to have the link to find it.

Im trying. My truck broke down last week so I couldn't get out until this weekend. Spent a good chunk of both Saturday and Sunday out with no luck. Glassed some cuts, did some calling, and checked my cams. I didnt see any fresh sign or have any recent pictures of bears. Im not sure if it was just too hot for them to be moving during the day much or what. Im going to head out 2-3 times after work this week and then this weekend too. Keep plugging away at it and hopefully something will work out for me.

I was back out last night with no luck. However did find some fresh piles in a couple of places. They certainly arent eating grass anymore. I plan on being out 4 of the remaining 5 days of the season and I'm starting to feel like i have an actual chance of seeing something that isnt just running across the road in front of me.

Nice. If you make it to my cams they have been set to video for a few weeks....will probably be quite a bit to sort through. I'm planning on heading out Sunday for a bike ride, cam check. Have an area planned out yet?

No, no plans for Sunday as to where to go. I could certainly head out that direction if you want to head out for a bit.

Nobody other than stang shot a bear in Monroe?  Oh dear God this will make his head big!  I'm going to have to hear about this forever now.

Went out with gallion yesterday. Some nice driving, some decent deer and one nice buck...no bears. I've got some good vid from the flamingos....one baby bear, one average bear, and one fatty that have been crusing the area. I'm trying to upload a vid but haven't got it done yet.

His head cant get much bigger, he already looks like a bobble head  :chuckle:

2/2 on Spring Bears... I am so good I even passed on one that I could've taken.   :chuckle:

I did contact WDFW because I wanted to be "The Best", but it sounds like one other non-HuntWA member did get a bear in Monroe.  Still, I'm pretty amazing.

Looking at successes over the last few years for the 25 tags issued:

2015: 2 (one of which was mine)
2014: 4 Bears
2013: 4
2012: 2 (one of which was mine)
2011: 1
2010: 7

Basically, I've killed ~17% of the Spring bears taken in the Monroe unit over the last 4 years.   :IBCOOL:

I might give it one last ditch effort tonight, but I dont have a whole lot of hope. If I dont fill my tag it wasnt from lack of effort. I feel like ive learned a good bit what to  look for for future years and even for the regular season. This was my first real effort at bear hunting so I knew i was going to need a lot of luck.

Thank you to everyone that offered tips and insight for this hunt. I certainly appreciate it.

Here's the major difference... I had an opportunity without D-Rock and waited for him.  Basically I allowed him to be there with me.

More importantly, ask DRock when the last time was that he killed a bear without my bullets in it.   :chuckle:  I think it may have been 2011.

Gallion, please kill one tonight, otherwise I'll just be up here on my high horse alone.   :llam:

This is a tough hunt. I put in countless hours in 2012 and didn't get anything. I only got a brief glimpse of one if I remember right. Good going Stang and DRock.
