Not that there is anything wrong with the standard 308,30-06 or the various 7mm and 30 cal magnums with some big scope on them but it gets really boring to read or talk about. For me personally i am going to be hunting with a Winchester 1886 in 45-70 with peep sights this year as i was successful last year on a small buck with my muzzy. If i am successful this year i will be using a open sighted or possible scoped handgun depending on how accurate i can be.
-
45/70 works very well, I think you'll be happy with it. I shoot it in my Ruger #1 single shot. Trajectory and holdover can be a little difficult past 150 yards but most places I hunt I can't see that far anyway :chuckle:
I don't know if you handload or not but the 300gr Hornaday hollow points at about 1850 fps work great on Mule Deer.
-
I do not handload yet but i plan to in the future. currently i am shooting hornady lever evolution 325grn @2050 fps.I used to have a Ruger #1 in 45-70 it was the light sporter i believe.I had a fixed 1.5 power shotgun scope on it.It was a great rifle and i regret selling it.
-
I would say that many of my hunting partners are very unique and interesting characters..
-
Rem 7600 in .35 Whelen with 250g round-nose handloads has got the job done for me on 2 elk (but no bear - so far) :'(
-
My step dad made me hunt with a tire iron one year, but that's another story.
-
I hunt with Coach! Oh wait, you said unique, not antique! :chuckle:

My dad hunts with a blr in .358 win i shot a 4pt whitetail a couple of years ago with it with buffalo bore 225grn xbullet @2550fps and that hit the deer like a ton of bricks was dropped on it. very impressive performance i can imagine the 35 whelen would be very similar 8)
-
I take the .444 Marlin out every couple years. It has thumped a few bucks.
-
I hunted last fall with a suppressed 760 pump carbine in 35 Remington, running my own 255gr cast hollow point subsonic loads. It worked great on the one whitetail I shot.

German Drilling , Suhl built in 1926, 16ga(65mm) x 16ga(65mm) x 6.5x58R Sauer. Weaver 1x4x20mm, it has a 4x Hensoldt scope in claw mounts that work well also but are too high to use coyote calling and not enough FOV.

Pic with a Liberty Mystic on my own QD mount, although I hunted with a Form 1 suppressor of similar size.

Supposedly 30-30 is the most common deer hunting cartridge, but I've never run into another guy carrying a Model 94. It's my absolute favorite. I like going into thick brush.
-
Thanks guy's this is exactly what i had in mind very nice weapons
-
I really like carrying a ruger 44 carbine.
-
1858 Old Navy 44 cal revolver, replica, got me a blacktail a few years ago.
Full length Finnish Mosin Nagent dropped a WT in WI a bunch of years back, open sights.
I've shot several deer with an underhammer ML.
Someday I'll use my Grandpa's vintage Winchester Model 94 30-30 with an original Weaver 4X sidemount scope that he got from my Grandma shortly after they were married - maybe this year for deer (off island).
I'd also like to use my 1884 Springfield 45-70 sometime too.
-
When you hunt with an Angry Squaw and a Crazy Larry what isn't unique or interesting!
-
Most of my guns are pretty bland; unique and interesting calibers is where I have a little more fun though!
The more well know but still uncommon calibers are:
358 Win (Savage Striker)
30 Herrett (Contender)
7mm TCU (Contender)
300 Savage (Savage 99)
284 Winchester (Savage Striker)
338 Edge (Jim Borden rifle)
The more obscure and unique calibers:
6.5 Badger (thanks to Biggerhammer )
270 RUM (Jim Borden Rifle)
338/375 Ruger (Savage Striker and rifle)
375 BME (Savage rifle)
458 Arnold (Arnold Arms Stainless Hunter built on Rem 700)
I've had some other really cool/random stuff over the years but most of them have moved on to new homes.

I use to do a lot of hunting with my old .250 Savage. Not a real popular round anymore. I also use to hunt with an old rabbit ears side by side 12 gauge.
-
243 wssm for deer and 325 wsm for bear and elk
-
Awesome topic!
35 whelen (love to have one), suppressed subsonic cast bullet 35 rem (outstanding idea), super cool stuff AWS.
My goal this year is to take a moose with my 44-77 sharps with a paper patched bullet. Shot one buff with it but a moose would be way cooler.
-
Used to use my dads 250-3000 Savage as well. Used his 30-40 Kreig as well once.

love those powder coated cast!

Not to many super exotics. I have hunted a lot with handguns 44 and 454 and of course my beloved Weatherby CFP. Also done some hunting with a contender.
I just dis a semi custom 7mm stw and I am looking forward to getting out and hunting with it. Hard for me to put down the weatherbys.
-
I hunted 1 Year with a Javelin. Then my Dad found out what I was doing and chewed me out. He didn't stop me though, he just didn't want me to do it around the house.

.450 Remington Ultra Magnum. Which is simply a .375 Ultra Magnum necked up to .458. A 500gr bullet on top of 102gr of Winchester 748 will get your attention, especially if your parked behind it on the bench. :o Drew the reamer up, had PTG make it happen. BenchMark barrels built it on a Rem700 action of mine and I tested it on a Manastash Bull.
First fire formed loaded round.

How about a Husqvarna sporter in 9.3x57mm? Nice euro sporter in the old school tradition.
-
Woodswalker, that would be cool. I keep looking at them and have to tell myself, I already have a 35 Whelen and a 9.3x72R. That little Swede in 9.3x57 does keep calling to me.
-
Used my Grandfather in-laws Ruger #1 in 25-06 once. My rifle had to go to my wife cause her scope bases almost came off hers and threw her zero WAY off. I thumped a white tail with it at about 50 yards, dropped hard right there, barley twitched. however besides the gun being heavy for what it is, its also just 1 shot, which really sucked cause after I busted the one at 50yrds the other 5 or 6 that were with it spooked and I couldn't reload fast enough to bust another lol.
-
Until I was in my teens I hunted squirrels, rabbits, possums, coons and misc other critters with my Colt Woodsman that was handed down to me from my Dad's Uncle who carried it on duty as a Revenuer in Alabama. It is still my go-to gun for critters that are too close to the house or for killing rats and mice in the barn.

Thanks for sharing guys. I have really enjoyed reading about and seeing the different guns and weapons used 😎

I sometimes use a Winchester model 1910 401wsl for deer. It's comparable to a .44 Magnum carbine, maybe a little more.
I cast my own bullets and reform 7.62 x39 brass for it. Lots of fun.

I hunt with an Enfield 1917 ( I think ) 30/06. It's old , heavy and ugly but it's killed a few deer for me. I bought it used, so I don't know the history on it. Makes me wonder where else it's been and what it's done prior to me owning it.

This the first time I've tried to attach a picture to a post. Did it work?
The rifle was made in 1912, the starting brass is 7.62 x 39, bullet is a 215 gr .410 swc (L)
-
That's a cool rifle 8) What's the velocity with that bullet?
-
With 23 grs of 2400 it's about 1600 fps. Pretty accurate out to 75/100 yds. Rainbow trajectory you know.
-
That's very cool. Got any more close up pics of that 401 wsl round made from 7.62x39 brass? Do you have to turn down the rim at all?
-
I don't have any at the moment, but I will take a couple and post.
Just for info, what I have done is make an expander plug with four gradually increasing lugs on it to expand the
neck our to the right size. I do have to turn the case to increase the size of the extractor ring. The extractor claw
on the rifle is more massive the on an AK or others. There is no case trimming, just load and fire form

yeh, impaired vision and an old broken body. don't ever shoot much but keep moving and have a lot of fun. the next beer is on me. mike w
