Title: what is your go to big game hunting rifle?
Post by: tgomez on March 13, 2015, 11:24:55 AM: If you could only use one big game rifle from your cabinet, which one would you choose? For me its my US m1917 Winchester .30-06 with 4.5-14x40mm Nikon Buckmasters BDC. This rifle has a custom Timney trigger set at 2.5 lbs. It is a real go getter and my go to rifle. It also has a custom stock with palm swell. Now whats your choice, love to hear and see. Thanks to all, Good hunting!

Post by: superdown on March 13, 2015, 12:47:46 PM: For me if i could only use one it would be my Browning A-bolt II .325wsm with a 2.5-8x36 Leupold vx-3.I have only been using it during bear season the last few years because of archery,muzzy now back to modern this year but i am using my 1886 in 45-70 since i just got it a little while back.

Can see...can hit with my handloads which are OLD school (and unobtainium now) Winchester brass with a WLR primer, undisclosed charge of IMR 4350 and a 165 grain Nosler Solid base. And no..the BT does NOT shoot the same and the old Solid Base.

In fact..if anyone HAS any orphan 165 grain Solid Base bullets...I'd be interested in taking them off your hands.

Hey Maggie, do you have a scope on your Enfield. I was gifted one by my grandpa couple months before he passed away. Anyways what scope mounts do you have on yours? I was thinking of possibly putting a scope on it or leaving as is haven't decided. Just curious how much it may cost to find mounts for it haven't been very successful finding any that say they will fit mine. It's already tapped. thanks

Been using it for many, many years. Killed my biggest Elk, Black Bear and deer with it. Made the longest shots I ever made with it. very consistant .75 inch 100 yard groups. Wears a Leupold VX III, 3.5X10X50, in Leupold mounts.

Surprisingly, my go to rifle is one of the only stock, factory guns that I own. In a safe full of custom, semi custom, and slapped together parts guns, the Ruger Hawkeye Alaskan in 375 Ruger is the most reliable gun I have. It has the smoothest action, the most perfect balance, and it's in a great all round caliber. With the VX-3 2.5-8 scope and a couple of 260gr Accubonds I can't think of anything that isn't in for a heap of trouble inside of 400 yards. Ironically I've yet to take any critters larger than a porcupine with it. :chuckle:

Post by: HawkCreek on March 28, 2015, 11:01:07 AM: My old standby is a Remington 700 ADL in .30-06 with an old Leupold VX-II 3-9x40. I've taken critters out past 400 yards with that gun and I'm sure it'd go further if I was willing. Off a bench with 165g BallisticTips it'll stay stay MOA or better if you shoot slow and dont let the barrel get to warm. It's definitely nothing pretty to look at but it just plain works. I have some nicer rifles in the cabinet but I have such a long history with the ADL that I trust it completely.

That being said my Ruger Scout is turning out to be quite the accurate stick with 175g SMK's. If I can find a hunting bullet that will shoot half as well as those I'll probably start packing that, at least for deer season.

Yep, lots to choose from but I always seem to grab the same early 70's Ruger M77 7mm, (purchased new) it's never let me down and I think I would feel like I was missing a old friend if I wasn't packing it around.

Same here except for elk its a 340 Wby and deer its one of the 30 cal, I guess I don't have favorites.

That laminated stock has come through rock and bobwire fences without a nick.

If I can get my new (to me) Mini-30 to "minute-of-beer-can", I may retire the .30-06 for westside hunting.

However, 'go to' to me means runnin' out the door with the possibility of facing anything and everything big game in the continental US. As many members likely do, I have dedicated calibers for each big game animal that I hunt, but the above rifle/caliber and components can easily do it all reliably.

I also have aTikka T3 in 25-06 (my 6th 25-06) with a Zeiss 4.5 x 14 x 44mm scope (handloads, as always). It is my dedicated deer rifle and it is laser accurate. I actually traded (plus some to me) my Sako 75 in 25-06 for a new T3 in 25-06. It is one of those rounds that, year after year, impresses me with it's ability to easily face plant nice blacktail bucks at even those longer pokes. It's ballistics and terminal effectiveness is truly impressive.

It has a Ron Long lock, an Orion barrel with a 1-72 twist and the walnut stock was made from a local tree that was hit by lightning.
For all my shooting be it target work or hunting I use 80 grains of FF, a .15 patch and a .530 round ball. For lube either spit for range work or bear grease for hunting.

I had the stock modified to fit me, trigger work done, and I know the balistics well. It serves it's purpose and I fill my tags with it.

I've kind of quit big game hunting, coyote hunting is such a rush. I have sold off almost all of my big game rifles but I do have a deer hunt planned in the next couple of years with my niece. Still have my model 94 30-30 but haven't used it in years as first I switched to muzzle loader hunting, then started having trouble seeing open sights clearly. I switched to fiber optic sights on my Muzzle loader and I'm going to try it on the 30-30 for rainy brush hunting days.

I have the same thing. Love it to death, feels just like an extention of myself when I bring it up. Although the day my dad hangs up his I will take it and it will go on every hunt with my. My granddad's sporterized enfield 30-06, kinda heavy but shoots like a dream and holds 7 in the mag and one in the pipe if I want to.

I've only bought Nosler 120 BT and shot it. I can't find enough brass and I don't have dies for it. I most likely will only shoot what I have. Are the 140's what you've ran ? This is a $325 Trophy Package I bought after the $75 rebate Savage had on them a couple months ago. I've only shot it out to 300 yards offhand and killed a rock with it. Quite impressive I might say.... :chuckle:
