It might be too early to tell, but isn’t the mild winter we’ve had potentially really good news for the upcoming grouse season?
-
Usually. The chicks do better when it isn't as wet and cold. Also should have more food available early.
-
I've been seeing lots of um out and about
-
Nice early spring conditions bode well for nesting success (cover) and chick survival (lots of bugs). As long as we don't get prolonged cold rain during the hatch, should be a pretty good year.
-
Saw a lot of them yesterday.
-
Was hearing them all over the place Thursday. Breeding season in full swing. How the survival goes depends on our spring weather, but they are not quite as fragile to the wet/cold as pheasant chicks are.
-
I suspect the hatch is on.
Mild weather even warm weather this weekend and into next week with the right amount of moisture to provide the bugs....Fall's already looking good!

I agree - looking good for a good hatch

Yep. I'm hopeful for grouse this year. Seen quite a bit more bugs around this year than in years past.

NOW is the time to be stocking up on shotgun shells for the fall.
While they're a) available and b) at off-season prices.

I've got 40-some boxes. I wonder if that will be enough? :dunno:
-
Its not enough Only if you shoot like me Bobcat! :chuckle:
-
I figure the absolute worst case scenario, would be three shots per bird. The limit is 4, so 12 shells needed per day. Looking at the calendar, I could possibly hunt grouse 8 days in September. October is out since I'll be hunting deer and elk every weekend, and then some.
8x12 = 96
That's 4 boxes of shotgun shells. I think I'll be good with the 40+ that I have on hand.

Any westsiders want to do a day sometime this fall?

Where are you? I like to hunt way up high or on the eastside. Could be we'll bump into each other behind a bush somewheres ;) :hello:
Good luck

Im in Seattle, so I have to travel regardless. I might as well go where there might be some expert guidance.
-
Should be one heck of a year for all upland birds ...including the turkeys ...Lots of berries getting ripe early ...should be awesome

How do you typically go for them? Walk, dog, road hunt? Shotgun, .22, bow?

No dog. Usually walk forest service roads and get them with the 12 gauge when they flush. But I'm a noob. I'm definitely not stuck in my ways. I also have a 10/22 with a cheapo 4x scope I could use too.
-
A lot of eastern Washington got hit hard with heavy rain showers right when chicks were born! Been seeing some grouse but no chicks and even turkeys had a low survival rate in places!
-
I forecast that a lot of new grouse habitat will be made this year  when forest fire season really gets going. It's only starting!

My fear is that a good portion of the National Forests will be shut off to us and forest grouse like water; so I also fear the tender dryness will make alot of coverts "grouse-less".

I usually go specifically for grouse later in the season, mostly walking overgrown roads. For the areas I go:
First part season is usually hot, dry, long days, long range shots and grouse that aren't so hungry as to feed all day. The dry part makes it tough(er) to quietly sneak on them. Plus it seems like adding the hot, they only make a brief early morning/late evening appearance and kind of stick to shadows near water. They aren't exactly cold, so they can hole up for the most of day. So early, most fall to the .22 or whatever is being used for bear/deer.
Last half is usually cool/cold, rainy, short daylight hours and birds out most of the day feeding. Seems that being pent up for a few rainy days makes for hungry grouse. So they have to feed all day long, which isn't but around nine hours or so with long nights. Plus softer ground from rain and no shadows due to clouds to spook them, you can get in good shotgun range.
-
12- or 20-gauge shotgun, No. 6 shot, or .22 rifle or pistol.
mornings and evenings. Old logging roads, berry fields, even lesser-used hiking trails.
Go high for the blues. Work the creek bottoms and alder thickets for ruffed.
-
Saw 3 different clutches on Fathers Day, little buggers are cute, but fast!
-
Yeah they are little speed demons. Amazing how fast they grow.
-
I saw a few of them driving down a FS road about 25 miles north of Aberdeen last weekend.

lol. Stupid commas
-
should be a good year for grouse. Seen over 50 last week. I have been seeing more blues than ruffed.
-
I have been seeing lots of grouse...much higher numbers than I generally see this time of year. I probably saw 25+ yesterday, not counting a group of at least 12.
-
This will be my first year going for grouse in earnest, sounds like it will be a pretty good one too!
-
Spring has been very favorable to nest success.
-
I saw 8 the other day just driving around looking for bears.
-
It should be one hell of a year for grouse hunting. Very good numbers.

I swear I am seeing dozens every time I go out. Blue and Ruffed.
-
I have never seen so many grass hoppers at 7,000 feet. The chicks are eating real good this year.

THE COUNTDOWN HAS BEGUN!

UPDATED....
Grouse are rumored to be on the warpath. Prepare to mount a counter-offensive.
:yeah:

Any news on grouse in the Willapa Hills? That's where I'll be September 1st, with my trusty Remington 1100 LT-20.

Saw this gal and 3 of her brood yesterday. Took the girlfriend out for an impromptu scouting trip/drive.
-
I lost count after 60 this morning up notellum ridge.
-
You don't say....
:P
-
All spring I heard drumming all over the place this spring and have been seeing grouse every were while scouting. Hope it's going to be a great bobcat year as well
-
I saw 2 ruffed grouse in my front yard this last weekend. They were in some shrubs scurrying around, then I spotted a red tailed hawk in there with them trying to get a meal >:( . First time in 11 years of living there that I've ever seen grouse in my yard.
-
Saw 10 yesterday riding my ATV with my wife...
-
I've been seeing lots of blue grouse in the Central Cascades while elk scouting recently. Sure seems like a banner year for them.
-
Saw over twenty yesterday in the Lake Wenatchee area.
-
10 days to go!
:IBCOOL:
-
I've been seeing tons of ruffs. Up in cuts, closed roads, berry patches, open roads. I saw one hen with five chicks today! Never seen more than three with one hen before. But lots of birds with multiple chicks. Lots of berries, seeds and grasshoppers/crawlies for them.

I saw 2 last week in the woods behind my pasture in Tumwater. I don't know how common they are around my house but they are the first I've seen in 3 or 4 years here.
-
Last Saturday I drove over 100 miles on Weyerhaeuser roads in the Willapa Hills, from daylight to dark. Did not see a single grouse. I was planning to hunt grouse on opening day, but my optimism has gone down considerably.

Hunt the food, not the bird...and in this drought, go where the water is.
