500 yard shooting (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W1Mu7Id2rQE#ws)
Shooting Targets up near Lake Cavanaugh in Skagit County. The winds were anywhere from 5 mph to 12 mph that day. We both had 300 win mags. My father in Law was shooting a GA Precision custom in a KRG whiskey 3 Chassis. I have been shooting a Remington 700 Long Range .300 Win mag. In this video, I was shooting the GAP rifle, because it is a lot easier to shoot and my Remington 700 was starting to beat me up. It really needs a muzzle brake, which I will be getting from Benchmark when I can.
I made up another load for my Remington 700 Long Range, 208 gr. A-Max, 76 gr. H1000, Loaded to max length at 3.600. That is my magazine length right there, and I'm still about .040 off the lands. I used a magneto speed to Chrony it, and it averaged 2907 fps. with a spread of about 20 fps throughout. When I did my part, it grouped at around 3/4". But as I have said before, this gun kicks so hard that every little mistake that I make is magnified greatly. It needs a brake, and it will be awesome.
Here is a picture of the gun I was shooting. I am getting errors trying to view the media gallery, so here is an attachment photo.

Nice!

Awesome!!
Check out Killer Innovations. They have a nice brake that does not break :chuckle: the bank. They are locals to, down in Thurston County.
-
I would have pulled the trigger on a Remington 700 long Range in 7mm Rem Mag if I could have found one.
I stopped in to Sportsman's in Wenatchee over the weekend but all they had was the 300 win.
For the reasons you stated I passed. I know the 300 is to much recoil for me. And I do not want to mess with a brake on a hunting gun.
I also stopped in a Cabelas on the way home in Marysville same story no 7mm.
I did spend some time looking at scopes for the future rifle.
What scope are you running.
Thanks

Right now, I have a bushnell 6-24 tactical on it. I will be switching to a Bushnell 3.5-21 dmr when I can though.

NICE!!!
-
Have you used RL25 to push the 208 amax out of your LR 700 300 winmag?

PM sent

:yeah:

No, I haven't use RL 25. I have pretty much always stuck with hogdons Extreme powder series because I am a hunting and I want my powder to be temperature insensitive.
-
Great shooting! Fun watching that.

Interesting...I did get a 700 LR 7mm Mag from Cabelas...but it took a special order to get it. The guy at the gun counter (Tualatin,OR) said there were only 4 in the entire US..all at the Sidney,NB location...so he got me one. Haven't shot it yet but does anyone have an idea of a load for it?

How do you like that amax 208 for a hunting bullet?
-
I haven't hunted with the 208 amax, I hunt with a 200 grain Nosler AB. It works well on game. But I am thinking about using the 208 for deer hunting this year. The Amax has a thinner jacket and would expand more than the AB would at long distances. I knocked down a deer last year at 680 yards with the 200 AB and that was pretty close to the limits of the bullet. I think it would have enough energy for another 100 yards or so until it might start having some expansion issues.

remington 700 LR recoil (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ir-jrwHdPDo#ws)
This is that recoil I was talking about. Yes, I know my hand comes off the gun. I am trying not to muscle the gun and that is how I shoot. I shoot a lot, and I am just flat out getting beat up with this gun. Every single mistake I make with this gun is magnified like crazy. Brake time.

that will definately give a MK248 a run for the money!

Oh yeah great shootng ;)

I didn't see any pressure signs whatsoever. i was surprised at how fast those 208's were moving, I was expecting around 2820ish. This was my first work up with the 208's and h1000. I have run the h1000 with the 200 Nosler AB, I was running 76.5 grains of h1000 and I was around 2840. I will chrony it again later because it was a heavier bullet, less powder, and stretched out further and was faster. I don't trust it yet.
I am really struggling with accuracy though. I haven't really fine tuned a load because I can't shoot the gun accurately enough to stay under an MOA. I have had moments where everything clicks, everything feels right, and I pull the trigger and it does exactly what I want it to. I have a had a few groups that I can cover with a nickel, and it wasn't just luck, I did it a few times in a row. But then I stood up, and moved to a different place and then nothing meshed. I couldn't get it to group under an inch. The recoil is too much for me, and I'm a bigger guy, about 6 foot 230 lbs, it just beats me up.
I'm not going to shoot it again until I get a brake.

Getting beat up takes much of the fun and even more of the shooters ability out of it for sure. Great shooting though thanks for sharing!

My 300 winny is brutal in prone position. Great shooting for sure!

At 500 yrds its great shooting for sure ..... I know my 300winmag is brutal on my shoulder too . I'm thinking too about brake .............. : :chuckle:

What shooters mat were you using?
-
What cheek pad do you have on the 700?
-
The mat is a midway USA shooting mat. The cheek pad is Blackhawk.
I also want a new bipod. This bipod is a 9-13 Caldwell. It does work really well for when I'm out hunting, but when I am target shooting, it is too tall and I fight to keep my rear bag underneath it.
-
gunbroker has some for sale. Try gungenie.com
-
I'm using a blackhawk axiom stock on my 300wm matched with a limb saver recoil pad. I can shoot it all day long with no troubles at all.
Not to be used with short eye relief scopes!!!!
Plan on putting it in an XLR chassis and then it will need a break. For now I'm happy

The Killer Innovations brake isn't suitable for anything bigger than .308.
That said the Fortis RED .308 brake works well on .300 and it has the same DNA as the KI brake.
-
I am pretty set on using benchmark, I know that they are good, and i plan on using them in the future. So I want to test them out and see what their service is like. I also would like my money to stay local.

There was a 7mag at the sportsmans in Spokane last week

For guys that a getting punished by recoil but are hesitant to intall a brake, have you thought about a sissy pad? :dunno:
I probably shouldn't admit it after calling it a sissy pad, but I use a PAST (http://ads.midwayusa.com/product/367156/past-mag-recoil-pad-shield-ambidextrous?cm_mmc=pf_ci_google-_-pf_ci_google-_-pf_ci_google-_-pf_ci_google&gclid=CJTOluu44sQCFUeUfgodqp4AGg) recoil pad when shooting my 300 WM at the range.
