Thank you for the support from Huntnphool, Boneaddict, and countless members. I'm going to try this thing one more time. I'll just say that I stopped contributing to the site because certain aspects of the site made the experience not fun for me much anymore. Hopefully things will be different this time around.
I figure a bunch of photos is the proper way to start contributing again. I know some of you may have seen some of these on fm, dpreview, yellowstone.net, and backcountryhunting but many probably have not. These are some photos from a few of my recent trips. If you would like to know a bit about each photo, you can go to this thread on backcountryhunting.net, a great site: http://www.backcountryhunting.net/forum/index.php?topic=473.0 I hope you enjoy them. So which one is your favorite?

Love that one of the old guy missing most of his teeth. Awesome pics Shawn!
Yeah, I love that ram as well. He is your Eastmans sheep issue cover photo from last year taken by Tony Bynum. Here is a link to more shots of him...
http://www.tonybynum.com/gallery/4692462_wiLZB#277545748_xoK9H
I have a 16x20 of the cover photo with him coming at you with the teeth. It is an amazing picture and turns out way better than I can describe and on the computer. Everyone who sees it is astounded. I would highly suggest everyone get a large print of this ram from Tony and support a great photographer.
Anyways, sadly that ram is probably dead. He was bleached out and sick in that picture I took of him. I can't imagine he will make it the winter.
-
Good call Basket. A lot of my photos over the years come from Rock Creek. It use to be easy to find 190"+ bruisers from that herd. Now I think the best sheep area is the breaks. But you can find a large ram in any Montana unit really.

Very nice photos,I was back in the CMR by Fourchette creek south of Malta 3 years ago and saw several big guys like that first pic,I would love to draw a tag back there!
Jerry
-
Yeah, it was always good fun to go and watch those big rams up Rock creek, another really good spot if there was deep snow is just up river about a mile from the mill in Bonner. There are some flats along the river opposite the highway where they congregate. If the snow was right in November the big rams would be down there, pretty awesome sight to see them fighting and posturing.
-
Welcome Back. Great Photos. I see Tony has a couple in the Montana Outdoors photo issue. Do you send any to them? You should.
Thanks Gramps. No, I'll leave the professional photography to pros like Tony. Keeps it fun that way for me.
-
Awesome pics. Thanks for coming back. Between you and Bone, we should be entertained for a while.
-
SWEET! Glad I got a chance to log on and what a surprise to see you back. LOVE THE PICS. Pressure is off and I can go back to shooting butterflies. Now you can help me fix my lens. WTH!!! The Panny out shot it yesterday. Thats NOT good.
Bigbuckdown, we don't need any past *censored* on here, so I nuked your post. Celebrate by PM or by acknowledging the posts. Leave the negative feelings at home.

I almost peed my pants I laughed so hard at your reply Iceman. I got a visual that was kind of funny... :chuckle:
-
Awesome pics, Shawn. Those rams are brutal to each other. :o
Bucks can get rowdy too. Here's a shot of a young buck giving his buddy a shot to the nads, no wonder the old guys are usually by themselves.

If I could keep up with it I would do a sheep a day. I got about 10,000 sheep photos so it would take about 30 years at a sheep a day...

-
Here is a new buck I've never shown. He looks really young to me. Maybe he will put on a little mass because he has width and a nice 4x4 layout. We shall see if he survives...
-
Do you have a side shot? Whats up with those mains?
-
Great to have you back, I probable should know this but I'm assuming you are a professional photographer, those are some of the best pics that I've seen, Well at least seconds to Boneaddict :chuckle: My favorite, hand down is the bug eyed buck, can I put that as my computer back ground it cracks me up... :chuckle:
-
Yeah, you caught that Rob. He broke off one of his fronts. You can see it from this side picture.
Thanks for the compliments Teacherman. No, I'm not a pro photographer. I'm just an attorney that likes to take a few pictures. That bug eyed buck is a nice buck. Tony and I call him the Smooth Fork buck because his back left side does not branch. He is decently wide with good mass. Unfortunately, he kept getting his butt kicked. He had got a little too close to the other buck and the 190 just ran him off right to me. He didn't care less about me but was really worried as he looked back to see if the 190 was still coming after him... Interestingly enough, he was able to get about 5 does later that day so kudos to him. Actually, the big 190 started running around after a doe in heat and he just took over as the dominant buck in that little harem.
Oh, feel free to use it as your wallpaper.

I'd love to see Pope or Bone or both put on a photography clinic in the future for those of us aspiring to at least reach "hobbyist" status with our photography Great stuff Pope and glad you're back. Now that Bone has a broken arm we expect you to pick up the slack. ;)
-
I have always had a standing invite to go out and shoot wildlife some time with anyone here. I'll extend the offer again. I just like to do it and help people at it. So for anyone that wants to go hit the Yakima or wherever, I'm good to go. So far, only Huntnphool has taken me up on it.
-
I am itching to get out at play with my new camera. When ever you are in the area let me know, I would love get out and shoot some wildlife.
-
I'm thinking of making an oak creek trip soon. The problem is it's hard to get good photos there. It'll be fun to try though... I'll let you know.
-
I'm in ;)

great buck. 8)

I'm going to take the kids on Saturday to Oak Creek to see the elk and play with my camera. Hopefully the clouds don't roll in.

Canon 40D + 300mm f2.8 L IS @ ISO 400, f2.8, 1/1000th
Who says you can't do wildlife photography at 300mm? ;) One of the reasons a razor sharp lens is useful is you can crop it heavily and still get a decent image. This lens is the sharpest Canon makes, IMO...
-
We'll def have to go on a velvet shoot. Awesome shot.
-
I'm so tired of the whining and crying about Obama, the country, liberals, etc. that we see pop up every day. If you look to the recent topics, half are usually concerning subjects like these. I am as much to blame as anyone as I go at it with many on here in these threads. This site use to be dominated by hunting and photography. I'm going to try and do my best to further that goal by posting good pictures and talking more about hunting in threads.
-
I'm with you on that, Pope, let's concentrate on what we have in common. Unless I'm in school. I'll be ready for a velvet buck session over at the Malheur this summer. Since my chance of returning to my old job blew away yesterday, I'm thinking I might have to move over there. If I'm gonna go broke, I might as well do it in a place I enjoy. :chuckle:
-
I'm going to try and do my best to further that goal by posting good pictures
I agree Shawn, I have been trying to get new pics up every couple days but its not working to this point.
-
You really take awsome pics

:yeah:
I actually decided about a week ago to just quit reading and posting on anything that looked political. Was getting too worked up about stuff. It was just turning into a bunch of posturing and everyone trying to sound smarter than they are... I am sticking to hunting. I suck at photography. Maybe I'll post some paintings... :chuckle:

If I'm ever disbarred or my wife divorces me, I'll have a camper on the back of my truck and just drive around to all the photo spots all year long. That would be fun!
-
That's my retirement plan. :)
-
I was looking at Tony's pic of his goat on Fair Chase magazine and thinking Goats are on my list for this spring.
-
I was looking at Tony's pic of his goat on Fair Chase magazine and thinking Goats are on my list for this spring.
If you're interested, I can give you the specific location in Mt. Rainier Nat'l Park where I snapped this picture. From our hiking adventure it became clear that goats spend a heck of a lot of time in this particular area. If I had your photography equipment and skills I'm sure there would have been lots of great shots to be had that day. :)
-
Goats are really low this time of year. They also have long hair and it's about time to get some shots. Tony has some great goat spots and I was able to get him liquered up last year and he took me to a few of his honey holes. I hope I can get out and get some this year. I would love to shoot WA goats. I would think Rainier would be snowed in good for a while...? Here is a goat from May of last year.
-
That is a great pic.
-
I would think Rainier would be snowed in good for a while...?
Definitely. It'll be mid-late Summer before a person could hike up into the area in my pic and snap some pics.
-
Great photos, pope. Thanks for sharing.
-
that one huge buck in velvet looks like his horns and body are too big for his little head and neck....
-
Mmm, leaves.
-
wow very nice pictures. I imagine it takes alot of expensive equipment and lots of practice to get that good.
-
You could make that shot with about $500 worth of equipment. I think it's more about getting out and doing what you love. For me that is photography and I spend a lot of time at it just like hunting and fishing.
Thanks bow-n-head
-
Pope...you've probably answered this question a thousand times, but what camera do you use?
You have a lot of great shots!
-
Canon 40D. I think they go for about $700. Not too expensive.
-
I think I've posted this one before but it's one of my favorites. I'll have to redo this photo. It looks ovesharpened to me.

I'll have to redo this photo. It looks ovesharpened to me.
Yeah that's exactly what I was thinking, it really makes it hard to even look at !!! :P

Hello, Shawn!
What a wonderful body of work! I'm new to this site, and therefore have never seen these images before. The sheep images are some of the nicest I've seen, and I've seen many, many sheep photos.
I've spent quite a bit of time up high photographing sheep, but I've never had the good fortune to find the full-curl-plus, trophy caliber rams that you feature here. I think that for every massive B&C class ram, there are about a hundred good, mature rams. So you've really put your time in to find rams like this. Or else you're very lucky. But then again, isn't it funny how some guys just seem to get lucky all the time? Makes me think it isn't just luck.
BTW, when were the bulk of your trophy bighorn photos taken - how recently?
-Tom
-
I've been taking big sheep photos for 15 years since high school. It's always been my passion. Most of my early work is in film and never sees the light of day. I started shooting digital 3 years ago and most of my ram shots on here are from the last 3 years. Montana has a lot of big sheep as well as Canada so I focus on these areas. The last ram shot is from the National Bison Range in Montana. Washington has a few big rams too...
People think they can just drive up to a spot, snap a couple pictures and leave. It's not like that. Most of my shots I have to hike a ways for. I spent 10 days in ram country last year during the rut in November just to get some of these shots... Most people would be bored after a couple days so it takes patience to get some of these shots as I'm sure you are aware. Others don't realize this though. When I spend 5 days waiting for a shot and finally snap it I get the feeling like I hunted the animal and took it. I get to take it home with me and keep the memories forever. Good times.
Thanks for the kind words. It's always good to get a compliment from a guy who knows what he is doing.

That's a great shot Pope. Your dedication shows.

the third picture up from the bottom with the 4 rams. How the hell do you figure which one to shoot?:dunno:
-
I was messing around with a few photos today and decided to share a few. That one ram is really sick huh?

LOVE that second shot. Ridiculously good. wow

:yeah:
I think that is the one I would use for my avatar...
That sick ram looks like he's part camel... Any idea what was wrong with him?

awesome pictures.
Looks like that third one is starving to death, wonder if his stomach flipped on him??

I think all the nourishment and growth is going directly into his gonads. :chuckle:

I would use it for my avatar but I recognize people's posts on here quickly by the avatar. When you change it it would throw me off. I'll stick with my old standby but I know what you mean. I love that ram. He might still be alive and he is in the 190's. I'm going to go see if I can find him in the bison range here sometime in the future. I doubt he made it another year though.
I don't know what was wrong with that sick sheep. It was August so there was plenty of food but he looked bad.

Here is a fun couple of photos. The first one is of a buck I was shooting pictures of. The second is a picture of me shooting this buck. The buck is about 50 yards out just to the left of the white camera lens.

That's a cool series Pope. Love that buck.

Great shots Shawn.
-
Great shots! You are very talented.
-
Thanks. I had my cell phone out while shooting this buck and Huntnphool called. I thought I would take a picture of my camera screen showing the big buck and send it to him via text message. I couldn't figure out how to send the picture so I just forgot about it. I found it on my phone the other day and scrounged up the picture of the buck in the screen.

Just curious Shawn, why would you underexpose the the pic and yet shoot it at 400 ISO? Why wouldn't you just drop the ISO to 200 or 100, wouldn't that give you the same result but less noise?
-
awsome pic's thank you

Pope, I think you should use that Ewe with the tag in her ear for your Avatar!!!........................... :chuckle:

This shot is at ISO 400, f4.5, 1/500th of a second. If I had dropped my ISO to 200, the aperture priority settings would have adjusted the shutter speed to 1/250th. That is fine but I like 1/500th to ensure a sharp photo. Because the buck is sitting in the shade, the camera was trying to compensate by making the dark foreground/buck too bright. When I underexpose the shot a half a stop it made the buck darker and balanced the shot better. If the shot wasn't underexposed by -.5 then the shutter speed would have been 1/350th. Even if I drop the iso to 200 I still have to tell the meter to underexpose by a half a stop. The meters aren't accurate all the time as they try and bright objects dark and dark objects bright. Hopefully that makes sense?
Also, remember I was in aperture priority so the camera will compensate the exposure when I make changes to the ISO. Had I been in Manual mode then changing the ISO would have affected the exposure.

That's great. I start to think I am coming close to figuring out this photography stuff, and Shawn post something like this. :bash: This is like coyote hunting. Everytime you think you have things figured out a little bit, you get smacked upside the head with some more knowledge that makes you realize what a greenhorn you still are.
Thanks for the lesson Pope. That is very helpful to someone like me.
A couple more questions. Do you use landscape mode for most of your wildlife shots? What were your WB settings or do you adjust that in PP if needed.
-

And it never stops! That "greenhorn" feeling, I mean. There's always so much out there to learn. At times we need to just enjoy what we do know and not stress too much about the rest.

LOL, get reay for that slap upside the head :chuckle: He shoots primarily "Av" or aperture priority, never ever in "program" mode or auto, "landscape"

That's a great question tbrad. I don't think you mean the landscape mode with the mountain on the mode dial on top of the camera. I use Av or aperture priority for 95% of what I do. I think you mean landscape mode in the picture styles menu. To answer the question...heck no. Here is why. It just bumps the contrast and saturation on the photo before you put it on lightroom or your raw editing program. It also sharpens!!! I hate the in camera sharpen as it is awful. I have nearly ruined some photos that I had to change the style in canon raw editing programs to fix that way. Keep your picture style on neutral or do a custom profile where it does nothing to your photos. The editing programs like photoshop do a much better job at sharpening photos. If you have a picture style that sharpens then you are bound for bad sharpened photos.
With WB I just shoot auto. I gets half the shots right and the other half I just change on lightroom. I find that canon's wb settings are too warm for my liking. Good luck tbrad.
-
So Pope what we are pretty much talking here is that most of the photos you shoot some kind of touch up is done via Photoshop or some other photo editing software?
-

Shawn, I've found the same thing to be true for me. I used to stress over getting WB set properly, constantly adjusting it every time the subject or location changed a little bit. Now I just leave it on auto WB and do a bit of fine tuning in PP when that's necessary.
-
:chuckle: Yeah, I meant the picture style, not mode, lol. Rob doesn't have much faith in me. Of course I worded it wrong. :P
I just saw the "L" on his lcd screen, which prompted my question. I want to get as much right "in camera" as I can because I don't have too much time for PP. Thank goodness for batch processing.
Thanks for taking the time to answer my questions. It is much appreciated.

Yeah, with RAW you definitely have to get basic adjustments like exposure and white balance tweeked. Like any good picture though, the better the photo the less you have to do to the photo. I have the photo thread series where I do a thread on what I do for post processing. I generally tweek the white balance, adjust raw exposure/fill light/contrast/vibrance. Sharpen in photoshop and save. Sometimes I'll use a noise plugin to reduce noise. Sometimes I'll remove dust with a clone stamp.
If my camera was in Landscape mode Tbrad, it was on accident... :bash:
