Title: At least one more year of baiting for deer and elk
Post by: ScottyG on April 10, 2015, 04:45:36 PM
Thank goodness!  Hopefully, in the next year, the "stakeholders" will realize that no change is a perfectly acceptable outcome.  Emotion and neighbors that aren't getting along should not be a driving force behind game management decisions.

WDFW calls it a social issue.......take that to mean their non hunting and anti hunting constituency ( whom by the way is larger than the hunting constituency ) doesnt like it and wants it gone........plan on it.

Actually, I believe the driving force for the ban is other hunters.

I totally agree.

It's not a social issue.  It would have greatly affected archery success to where we would have had to change the archery seasons drastically.

Me too? :dunno: I started bow hunting in 1986, seasons haven't changed much. I never used bait for bow hunting until 2013, up to that point I killed a decent buck each year. I never used a game camera for scouting until 2013. I spent more time in the stand but filling my tag wasn't a problem. I started baiting for my kids starting in 2004. I have no problem with the use of bait, but I think some hunters have got so use to using bait they think it's the only way to harvest a buck. :twocents:

The reason I'm confused with the statement was because archery seasons allow for several weeks in September  and also allow a late season during the rut and post rut. Best dates possible the way I see it to harvest a buck, reguardless if you use bait or not. :dunno:

Not in the rut at all. Post rut yes. pre-rut yes.  If anybody is hunting the rut its the modern 4 day late blacktail and the modern permits that have the prime rut. Matter fact i see most of the blacktail bucks right around Halloween. By the time the archery late season comes around. There all but gone.   Just a observation.

The season dates, areas and restrictions are set based upon previous harvest data: resource allocation is what we call it. If a ban on baiting were to occur, and if that led to reduced harvest by archers, then the archery seasons would need to be expanded in an attempt to keep an equitable harvest rate.

A simple fact that is ignored by this method of season setting is that 10% of the people are always going to be responsible for 90% of the harvest. The remaining 10% of the harvest is split among the 90% of the people who only average 5 days in the woods per year: no matter when our how long the season is.

Success rates would also drop for modern and muzzleloader.

Yep, Archers aren't the only baiters, they're just the master baiters.
