I don't know about anyone else but I plan on being apart of the elk slaughter in the Margaret unit this year for modern fire.
-
Good luck with that. Lot of people going to be in for a big surprise. And it wont be a good one!
-
Good luck ...i think youl find by the time rifle season comes around all those margret bulls will become mudflow & monument bulls

Whoops, beet me to it :yeah:

:yeah: That unit is not what it once was in the 90s. Some of the areas that still hold some good bulls are still draw hunts. There will be a few good bulls taken from the tree farm for sure but I think the masses that flock there and buy a pass will be largely disappointed. I think this is just a money grab by Weyco with the fee access and has little to do with providing opportunity or even herd management.
-
It's funny how people think it's just gonna be this great hunt because it was a draw for so long. There's a reason it's not a draw unit. Besides the numbers it's a ton of deprod. Probably gonna be a zoo I hope so that means less people in the unit I hunt ; )
-
I wouldn't waste my time in the Margaret. Unless you like hunting reprod and with ton of people.
-
It's going to be an amazing hunt. Especially for archery, everyone with a west side archery elk tag should hunt there. Garanteed trophy class bull if you do, I mean dan Agnew himself bribed public officials to get it open up for his own personal trophy hunting grounds . Go get um boys
-
:yeah:
-
Not sure who Mr. Agnew is, but it seems he isn't too popular on here.
-
With the later archery season this year, it will be crawling with arrow fingers. Hopefully a few will be left afterwards.

Didn't pick up on the sarcasm huh? In all seriousness I do hope this unit takes a ton of hunters this year releaving pressure in other units. Where I hunt I never have to worry about a ton of pressure but the type of hunters that will just blindly flock to this unit since now it's "finally open!! " deserve the zoo they'll create and the rest of us can enjoy our elk season just a little more

Here's the real question--how much will more Weyerhaeuser charge over last year for a permit?? Bet they will jack up the price or spin off the Margaret as a separate permit. Supply and demand, right. Oh, I forgot, the whole permit deal isn't about making money and selling the public's wildlife, it's all about garbage dumping...
-
They did jack up the price- by $10.00.
It was $150 last year. This year it's $160, with a limit of 5,000 permits.
-
Does Weyco allow camping on the St Helens tree farm if you pay for an access permit? If they allowed camping I think it would be worth the price.

No I don't believe so. But the Vail and Pe Ell permits do.
-
They cut out the Back country section of Margaret so I'd expect the elk to flock there pretty quickly once the pressure shows up. Plus it seems very often these days the logging lands are closed to fire danger. Now you wont have the Forest service lands as a plan B.
It will be an interesting year to see how things fall out.

I think a lot of Margaret will be split up into weyco leased sections... :twocents:

There's thousands of acres between the Weyerhaueser land and the monument for the elk to flock to.

I just read on FB that a local guy down there, has found 100 dead elk from hoofrot, probably BS, right ? At least that was my take on it. If he did, that would be all over the news, well, maybe.

Maybe BS, maybe not. If they were all in a small area it would be a bigger deal. Hoffrot has hit that herd pretty hard. I hunted down there year before last and found more piles of bones than live elk.

I'm kinda thinking, stretching the truth, maybe. You know how it looks good on a guys post, especially on FB..
-
In some areas more elk have hoof rot than don't. So I wouldn't doubt that a guy could find 100 dead elk.

That's kind of mind boggling. But then of course, if there are 6000 elk there, thats not really that much I guess.

With such an easy winter I can't imagine 100 dead but I don't spend any time up 19 mile anymore so who knows...I've noticed alot more hoof rot in the cold water & castle lake area this year tho but still no where near the levels that the low country has....I'm almost hoping for a really bad late storm just to kill off the infected
I watch a chopper doing some kind of survey on the elk below castle, merrata creek,Jackson creek and the flow in between...was wondering if it may be related to hoof rot
hopefully they remove them so the tourists don't see...nothing like watching a couple hundred half Dead elk to bring in the tourist dollars
-
I'm not sure the winter matters much in whether these elk die or not. When their hooves get bad enough they eventually lay down and won't get up. Then just lay there until they starve to death. Maybe predators find some of them and kill them off a little sooner. But I doubt the severity of the winter makes much difference.

Here are the 2014 total harvest numbers from WDFW for the Margaret and some surrounding units. Interesting to me that Bull Hunters in the Margaret had a much higher success rate than Cow Hunters for every weapon type.
Cows Bulls Total 6pt or better Bulls
Margaret 17 58 75 15
Toutle 55 38 93 4
Winston 67 130 197 15
Coweeman 50 132 185 15
Ryderwood 109 169 278 12
I'm interested in seeing what others make of these numbers, but it seems to me that the Margaret is still a good option, especially for those looking for a 6pt bull.
-
The main reason I mentioned winter is that it concentrates the elk....coming across 100 dead elk in one area youd think there would of had to be a 1000 total elk and with the elk being able to go where ever they want this winter that seems unlikely
I'm not a bio but I'd imagine cold weather on elk that are starving to death is the last nail in the coffin :dunno:
Either way every one loses and the tourists are the next in line...
-
As was seen in the second Shrek movie the only place I want to be is Far Far Away from this unit for modern :chuckle:
-

All Weyerhaeuser lands in Washington are open as far as I know. (For those with access permits)
-
Here the email
Currently, the Margaret GMU is at a level 2 (shutdown zone 660).
The direction we were given last year from senior management was that permit access would not be restricted unless the Industrial Fire Precaution Levels reached a level 4 in that particular shutdown zone. https://fortress.wa.gov/dnr/ifpl/IFPL.aspx Level 4 means general shutdown (all operations are prohibited). It has been 10 years since we have seen a level 4 but this could potentially be the year it gets there again. I would offer refunds on permits if access was denied for this reason. I would need the permit packet to be mailed back prior to issuing a refund. The Recreational Access Hotline/Website (link below) will be updated with any closure information.
Thank you,

I know. Wdfw went in there with snipers and *censored* down elk with hoof rot. Plus they have our permits for the Indians to go in there and kill elk for years so. Y'all are in for a real treat. Agnew is a jack@$$
-
There's plenty of elk in there. I guess the guys that got busted parked on the hwy and hiked in. Regardless if u like a guy or not as hunter it's our responsibility to respect other people's land. *censored* I can think of tons of places I can't hunt do to it being posted!

It is going to be a blood bath in their for rifle and muzzle stuffer.
-
Ya most the unit is timber, people will have to get out of there truck and hunt

Exactly. As long as you put in the effort, wind in your face and being quiet it should be a fun time.
-
One of the 2 bulls I saw was a small rag 5 with bad hoof rot

Going to be a complete zoo!

I am not sure... I think 95% will just drive the roads and walk in about 200 - 400 yards and turn around. The other 5% will be going deep to get an animal. Should be fun...

Was it a zoo while you hunted it this year? I would have thought archery would be about the worst one, that is the only time I'd even want to hunt that unit.
-
There was alot of archery hunters in there. One particular basin

Any ideas on who posted four "no trespassing" signs on the gate to PUBLIC LAND that the WDFW and USA owns that is adjacent to 504??? Someone who thinks they can keep others out??
-
Not sure where that is

Where abouts you talking about. I'd be curious to check it out.

Yeah lots of idiots tried hunting Agnews land that was clearly posted. I was up there and there is no shortage of mature bulls, just gotta go where others can't. Only saw one raghorn, all the bulls I chased where big 5's or bigger. I've got multiseason do was being picky

Isn't there a forest service guy or warden watching for trespassers up there? I thought it was going to be watched pretty good by them.
-
It was patrolled daily, on the opener they reported something like 17 license plates to the sheriff. They're having a lot of problems with trespassers
