Like I have said in a previous post I shoot a 270 grn Gold Dot in 44 Mag. What are your thoughts on the Gold Dot vs. the XTP in 44 Mag???
-
I think either would be fine but mine shoots the XTP's a bit better. Use to shoot the 240 Gold dots but like I said the Ruger likes XTP's better.
-
Hunting or Self Protection?
-
It would be for Hunting / Side arm while in woods.

I can’t remember using the Gold Dots. Probably fine bullets I just haven’t used them.
I do use and like very much the XTP. I load the 90 gr .308 in both 30/30 and 30-06 and it is very accurate if not overdriven. This would make a good varmint round.
I load the 158gr & 180gr .357 in .357 mag. Both are very accurate.
I’ve also used the 240 & 300 gr .430 in 44 mag., again very accurate. And I’ve used both these and the 300 gr. .452” my 50 cal muzzleloader and they are all very accurate out to at least 200 yards. I’ll probably use one of the 300gr bullets for ML hunting next year if WA makes them legal.

XTP...extremely well built with contolled expansion. Gold dots also have controlled expansion, but they expand faster and wider. You need more penetration then the Gold Dots offer.

you get a lot more and deeper penetration with the XTP's over the gold dots, if your defending yourself from man either one if from fangs and claws id stick with the XTP's
