Title: how late is to late?I
Post by: LeviD1 on April 25, 2015, 11:50:01 AM
So I haven't looked a ton at the regs on the season for turkey so if I get this wrong sorry. But I have never tried to hunt turkey but really want to hunt something with my bow and since turkey is going right now I'm thinking I just might. I think i saw that it ends at the end of next month but what I am wondering is will the turkeys still be actively breeding and will they still have their color by the end of the month? Or have I kind of already missed the prime time.

Thank you

If you don't get one in the spring use your tag for the fall hunt.

Now is a perfect time to head out after them.  They don't lose their colors....ever.

Never to late as long as the season is open ..We all get excited about opening weekend but the ones that never hunted late have no idea what they are missing ..Yes, the are birds are all over when it begins but to me I love hunting after the 1st two weeks are over ..It maybe a little harder to locate them but when you do they usually run to the call . Last time my boys and I rolled into Colville we arrived about 8:30 am that morning . We set up camp and while I was putting the tent up , the 2 boys walked up on the hill and within 10 minutes of being there they rolled one .. and by 2:30 or So we rolled 2 more ...3 birds down in a couple hours ..and when they answer and you get them fired up , they hammer back very loud ...love it

Some of my best hunts and my Largest Merriam's came on Memorial Day weekend. I think with the weather we had this winter and early spring are going to bode well for that senario again.

Just like others have said, you never know when the birds are gonna be hot. We've called in gobblers on the last day of the season in the past.

Seems the first couple weeks the toms are with the hens. Once the hens are nested up, the Toms will be looking for any available hen. May has been better than April for me. Right now, I have had to go to them and get them to see my decoy, then they sometimes come in. Good luck and have fun bow hunting; it is like learning to hunt all over again with triple the excitement when it all comes together.
