I've always loved elk hunting but deer was definitely my favorite. That is until I got my bull, there was something about being 30 yards from a screaming bull that has ruined me for life. Being in the heart of elk country in the rut is what I imagine heaven is like!
-
The only way I keep my insanity from waiting 20 damn years for a big bull tag is to help out on other hunts. Helping others is almost as rewarding as killing the bull yourself, almost! If I didn't hunt Idaho for elk, I'd be in a straight jacket! I also think about elk everyday, this time of year especially. I can't make up my mind on where to put my 20 points!!! Lots of good tags out there.
-
Your not the only one coach, I guess I'm fortunate because I live in the heart of elk country and spend all my free time shed hunting and scouting for Elk, big bulls stir up a lot of emotions in people from the moment we realize they exist to the time when this might just be our year to finally draw a tag, I hunt the east side of the state so most years filling the freezer with a cow or spike is as good as it gets, last year I got to help 2 friends fill there quality rifle elk tags in prime elk country so at least I got a taste of the rewarding feeling when everything comes together , when the stars align just right , I did get some great videos of at least 2 bulls in the 400 plus range with snot dripping out of there noises during the rut, while thrashing trees, along with many game camera photos that keep me sane until elk season opens again, here's to a good year...
And a little good luck
-
Coach have you thought about counseling ? Better yet get your 9/16 combo out and get to work
-
Cure is to become resident of a state, like Montana, where there is a long and unrestricted elk season.

Its the worst kind of addiction. Hit hurts so bad but you like it so much. I have never had an easy pack out. Closest to a road was an Idaho bull that was about a half mile in nasty timber. Last years cow was almost 6 miles :yike: The reward is great, but the pain, sweat and blood makes you second guess yourself. You curse life and the weight on your back. You hurt for a week afterwards. Then two weeks, you heal and you think it wasn't so bad. A month goes by and it turns into an epic adventure and your convinced you will do it again. Shortly after that the obsession kicks in, your jonsen to get back in the hills, looking at google earth and planning next years hunt...yes, your addicted, you cant fight it, there is no- permanent cure. You learn to live with it and move on. Sometimes people try to mask it, trying new addictive things, sheep, mule deer etc...it just makes it worse. Your body builds up resistance over time and instead of counter acting the effects of the all mighty bugle, you have just compounded your addiction. Now your really screwed....welcome to the dark side coach...but something tells me you have always been here..

:chuckle: exactly! :yeah:

Everyone asks me what my dream hunt is. The first time I thought for a while before coming up with an ever so obvious answer: the hunt I do every year. Central MT General Archery. It would be cool to hunt for dall sheep or moose, but I dont think much compares to screaming bulls.

Im going to draw! That means atleast you get to call for me.. :chuckle:

"I have been so lucky to have countless epic encounters and all I think about is the next ."
Lucky my ass. You make your luck and I have seen you do it for years. Nobody I have ever hunted with comes close to what you are willing to do to get the job done. You have almost killed me a few times. Remember "I knew what I was getting in to". It was a lie. Can't tell you how many times we have stopped at a nasty overlook and I thought "OH PLEASE NOT HERE". Sure enough a bugle and over you go. Being a few years older I find it easier now to pick you up at the other end than trying to keep up. I am blessed to have had the chance to hunt with you. Love you brother and all the guys! Can't wait for another season.

 Was holding good groups at 50 yards today. Time to get back in a good routine of shooting my bow consistently. Been driving around bugling blowing out my eardrums in the truck! Season will be here before you know it!
-
Has anyone found anything that compares for an all around experience than winning a chess match with a mature back country bull in September? ....every time I walk up on the master bull it's like I just summited everest
between the final meat processing with the family... the physical & mental anguish of hauling meat for days...the amount of joy walking up to your year/life long dream....the moment nature takes over your body during the last moment he was king...the days/weeks of chess games and failed attempts....the camp comradery...packing in camp....the scouting...the training...the dreaming of giants
Ya...it can't be beat

So much this.... Coach's motor doesn't know idle. Who needs water, lights or a knife when the bugle up the hill might be the one? I was definitely lucky to be there when the hammer stroke fell this year and still can't believe it wasn't in one of the 300 hell holes that it could have been. Some of the best days of my life have happened in the last two years thanks to Aaron Blanchard and you ya crazy hunting son of a gun. Laughter and tears, sleepy time driving, maps, gear reviewing, Blizzards, shootem's Swaro scope, RT's crazy brotherhood and blrmans's passion... I count myself a lucky man to get to help plan the next adventure we head out on. My son will never forget the gift of his first bull thanks to you... And I can't wait to see what the next tag is you draw as we will have too much fun. Here's to next season being better than the last!
