Title: CZ 527 conversion****Finished****
Post by: jay.sharkbait on May 01, 2015, 06:36:52 PM
I have always wanted to convert a 7.62x39 Mini Mauser or CZ 527 to 264 LBC/6.5 Grendel.

Recently I managed to talk Yorketransport into doing one,(didn't take much) and here are some pics of the doner rifle. I'm really excited to see how it turns out.

Last one is the beginnings of the action wrench.

And if anyone is concerned about the rock, it was very gently positioned.  :)

Keep us posted on the project. I'm a CZ fan with 6 in my stable.

Neat project, Yorke had mentioned it. Do tell? What length , twist and barrel make? Are the open sights going to be implemented onto the new barrel? Is the new barrel going to be finished satin stainless or coated to match the receiver?

Hmmmm? A readily available CZ action wrench..

It's getting a 19" 1/8 twist Black Hole barrel. We are going to leave the sights off and I plan to bead blast the barrel and leave the rec'r blued. The bluing and finish work on the rifle is outstanding BTW.

I figure the best way to go is to make a proper internal action wrench. We were looking at our existing wrenches and decided to spend time and do it right.

Looks like they are now selling actions

http://www.thefirearmblog.com/blog/2015/04/27/cz-usa-will-offer-7-62x39-527-receiver-assemblies-for-sale/

Don't know about pricing.   It may make more sense to just buy the whole donor.

I think this would make a great "short course" precision rifle if you could get 10rd mags.

My experience with past projects has been that it's cheaper to buy a donor rifle than just an action when you can get away with it. Plus, sometimes you get lucky and get one with a nice piece of wood like this one has! A friend of mine wants to start shooting some of the PRS matches and I actually thought about trying this rifle in one to see how it does.

I thought about having iron sights put on but this rifle was intended for "my son"  ;). I think that a VX-2 2-7x28 ultralight scope will be the perfect match. I'm hoping to have the completed rifle weigh 6.5-7 # when it's done. It will be a pleasure for me, I mean my son, to carry around.

I have to admit that I'm almost embarrassed to be seen with such a small caliber though. I have a reputation to keep up! I'll have to make up for this on the next project. :chuckle:

The mags are pretty skinny but I can check Monday and see if .458 SOCOM will fit.............

There is one close to you in Eatonville the first Saturday of the month.  I shot in today's match.  The highest round count for any given stage was 12, with some fewer.  Two mag changes or one mag change and 2 single loads would not be a huge disadvantage.  It's a great way to replicate hunting situations when compared to shooting off a bench.

Why not keep it iron sights? I got my first Cz last year and it is a shooter. I like the 7.6 with the removable mag and round feed. Is the 6.8 a better deer/black bear round than the 7.6. I don't have much experience with either.

I am thinking of getting a 527 for a brush gun for blacktail/bear.

Sweet gun.

The .264 LBC / Grendel will eat a 6.8 SPC for lunch and still want more.

Blackhole Weaponry does do a 6.5x6.8, they just necked the case down and made it right with the world. What it should have been to start with.

I like what I'm hearing. Looks like my new 527 will be a donor as well. Thanks for the advice guys

Why not keep it iron sights?

Because I'm nearly blind and won't admit it!  :chuckle:

I'm just excited to see how the 160 grain Matrix VLD shoots out of this. I might even be able to get the bullet out of the barrel before it starts to tumble.

It's hard enough not buying one of those little 527's as they are but then you have to go and start a project like this... Might be to much for me to resist even if my bank account will hate me for it.

Ok, barrel is now off.

The internal wrench didn't work that great. The bolt body has a very small diameter and the wrench tended to twist in torsion.

Went ahead and made an outside wrench that captures the recoil lug and a Teflon block that goes over the receiver rail.

Just waiting on barrel and we'll see how it shoots.

Wait!!!!!! I changed my mind and want to leave it as a 7.62!!!!!! :bash: :chuckle:

Any chance of being able to run it as a switch barrel? I doubt I ever would, just curious.

Finished and test fired today.

This things a little hammer! Super fun to shoot, no recoil and light.

That's a good looking gun!!!! I have a feeling that you're going to be making more of these

I can't wait to see how it shoots with some good hand loads. Those factory ammo groups have set the bar pretty high though! More importantly, I need to pick it up before it becomes property of Grizz Precision and I never seei it.  :chuckle:

The best part about this being done is that now we can move on to the next project.  :IBCOOL:

There has been a little interest :chuckle:

We will be offering pre-fit barrels and action wrenches in the very near future. Please contact me via pm if interested and i'll have pricing soon.

If I can get the mag figured out for 458 SOCOM i'll do one for myself. I think a 16" suppressed  SOCOM would be fun.

That turned out well, if the kinks could get worked out with the magazines. A .458 SOCOM would be a interesting option.

I'm a huge fan of the cz 527 platform. Have you done any experiments with the modified bolt handles?

Honestly I havn't. All my spare time has been spent getting ready for a new cnc mill.

Once that is up and running i'll have time to look at different projects.

The modified bolt handles is suppose to facilitate lower mounting of the scope

I've heard about the modified handles and it's something I was considering. That's my only real issue with the CZ 527 is that you need to run fairly high rings to clear the bolt handle. I may end up throwing a cheek pad of some kind on there so that it fits my son. I'm thinking something like a Karsten's  or some other big obnoxious kydex one. :peep: ;)

Just duct tape an old glove to it or something.
