Of all the Bears I've ever seen only one has been in the early morning. 95% have been in the afternoon/evening.
Ditto to only seeing one black bear in early morning in my life. It was a smallish bear and since there was a humonguous bear in the same basin that fed each afternoon, I think that the small bear fed early to avoid the big one. :dunno:

So it would depend on location, terrain, available feed, activity level, and most likely human interactions. Hunt bears where you see them, when you see them. if you only see bears at a certain time of day, its probably a learned behavior on your part - conditioned by where you choose to look for them. :tup:

Au contraire! My theory as to why I hardly ever see a bear at dawn is that my eyes and binoculars are defective and that they do not pick up visuals on bears until well after sun-up. :chuckle: My visual equipment increases its sensitivity to detect bears as the day wears on. :tup: There have no doubt been many bears in view during the many mornings that I have glassed bear country but my binos only show them later in the day. I'm not sure what to do about this defectiveness in my binos. :dunno: They work fine to see deer, elk, coyotes etc. any time of day, but can't see bears in early morning. Very strange.
For example: no bears at sun-up and three bears on the same hillside at 6:00 pm. No bears on a mountainside at dawn but seven spring bears there an hour before sunset. Obviously those bears were present early in the morning but my binos can't see them till later in the day. I need early morning visual help!
Just thought of another sunrise bear, glassed in the Paysayten on a mid-summer deer scout. Once in awhile I am able to thwart my defective binos and see an early bear. Sigh.

Based on your description, I don't think it has anything to do with your equipment or visual capability, your obviously hunting the after work crowd and there favorite diner. When you walk into the local bar and grill in the morning, you don't see any of the local working class in there, but after the whistle blows, all of a sudden there are locals everywhere... You just need to find where the bears work during the day, or eat lunch! :chuckle:

Spent four days in bear country and saw 11 bears. We usually started hunting about 9:00 AM so am guilty of not looking for them in early morning. Besides the one at 8:15 AM I saw one at 1:30 PM, one at 3:15 and eight after 7:00 PM, including three in a five minute span. The bears exist at dawn, but are seldom in a place to glass, nor do they appear very active early in the day. Not sure how well they would respond to calls in that inactive state, but have seen bears at leisure look longingly at a call sound, sigh and slump down where they are. A man could find a brush patch with bear sign and crawl in amongst 'em at dawn.
