What color felt do you guys think look good on bear rugs. My bear is black. I have never done this before and want it to look good. I have to decide by next week. If you have pics of rugs you have please post.
I can pick two colors.
Her is the picture of the bear it will be going with.

I like the brown and black or red and black combo personally :twocents:
-
I was pretty happy I chose black and charchole (gray) looks really good as a little more subtle accent
-
Red or gray & congrats that's a nice bear
-
Red...like a burgandy....or orange. Don't ask why on the orange...I just think it may look good.
-
I was going to say red and black until I saw longwalker's post about grey and black. I am thinking that would look really sharp.
-
Mine :dunno:
-
Kind of like something like this...what do you think??
-
Red and black for me
-
I like the red on black...but only if the red is on the outside. Like this???
-
I think the black makes the bear look bigger?? Heck...I don't know :bash: :bash: :bash: all the decisions. :chuckle: :chuckle:
-
The burgundy looks good too..... :dunno:

The brown on black has always been my favorite combination.
Are you going with open or closed mouth?
-
closed mouth...I'm pretty sure :chuckle: I'm so indecisive. :chuckle: :chuckle: I have never seen a black bear with an open mouth in the wild it kind of looks unnatural to me.
-
Better just do a full mount.
-
My bear was jet black and I went with the sandstone felt. Mostly because we have a lot of beige in our house and that color seems to go with about everything.
Nice bear!

Already have a full mount bear..... :yike: :yike: :yike: Just when you think rugs are expensive. :chuckle:
-
I wanted to save on wall space so I went half mount with the ears back to make it look bigger. My buddy did a rug and did black on black to make his look bigger.

Grey inner, black outer felt here

Good choice  That gray on black is really nice looking too :twocents:

With my jet black bear i did army green and black felt.

Do you have a picture? Haven't seen a dark green yet.
-
I went with the brown and green. I like the red and black for black hair though.
-
My only advice is have the rug with the mouth closed. The prostetic mouth on mine is too small and looks obviously fake.
-
I personally don't like the red on black, grey would be better to me.
-
Green and Black. Looks like I need to do some dusting. :chuckle:

I like the tan around the bear, then the dark brown beyond the tan (outer edge) it shows off the bear better, plus its all earth tones, usually blends in well with other colors as apposed to red or green felt. You can go with other colors with future bears, you will have to decide then if you want them all looking alike or different.
-
I've got an old black sow with dark brown under black felt, closed mouth. I think she looks great. Work by Tubbs Taxidermy, message me if you want to look at it.
-
My rug has black and grey. I like it it goes with everything.

:yeah: I was thinking the same thing looking at the pictures. I most definitely like the offset color first (brown, tan, gray) then black or dark brown on the outside. Just being able to see the bear's outline in contrast looked more pleasing. Just my thoughts, they all look great though either way.

Choose colors that compliment the bear. On real black bears I almost always use a black base color especially if it was skinned properly. and the top color i choose will accent any other color on the bear I want to accentuate like a tan muzzle. On your bear a green on black would look good as well as a red on black and a tan on black.

I went with charcoal and black and am happy with it. Ive seen some red ones with faded felt that look horrible so I would caution that, pick colors that don't clash with your room
-
I also like the mouth closed, it just looks phony to me when it's open. Rainier taxidermy is going to do the bear I shot on Sunday, I've never done a real rug before. They are expensive! I have a full mount, half mount and a few hair on tan's. I like the hair on tan, much cheaper!! I never considered what color for the felt, thanks for the thread, I will have to ask Zach what he does.

Final decision made.....Mouth closed black inside and burgundy / dark cranberry outside. Can't wait to get the mount back....super excited.
