Looking for a new riflescope for the rifle I'm building. want to start learning more about long range shooting ( not necessarily for hunting. but for fun ). $1300 is MAX. what are your thoughts?
I was leaning toward Nightforce SHV 5-20X56

what caliber rifle, what bullet, and how fast wil it be going?
-
Don't have the parts yet. but this is what it should look like.
7mm SAUM
Defiance action (already ordered )
30" benchmark barrel ( already ordered )
seekins muzzle break ( already ordered )
going to be shooting 140-170 grain. don't have a load yet but the guys at benchmark were telling me good stuff about 168 berger bullets
just buying parts right now. 4-5 months out for ordered stuff

HDMR
-
A used Niteforce in good shape would be my choice.

I'm liking thee ziess 5x1 5 conquest HD .

Like the setup your making! There was a scope review article on here a month ago or so you may want to try and find it. Show pics when its put together.

zeiss conquest HD5 5-25 x 50 would be about $900-1000 depending on where you find them.

Well, I dont think the SHV is enough scope to match your potential ballistics of that setup. It looks like it may not have enough turret travel even with a 20 MOA base. The NSX would be a better choice as it has an external turret, and also has more travel. Look for something with 110 MOA (30 Mil) travel in the elevation turret.

The SHV has 100 moa adjustment and you can get a 20 or 40 moa base you would have more then enough

Check out B&H Photo. I bought my Steiner from them a couple of months ago and saved $250 off the list. They have used, as well. Here's a link to the scope search:

the 4-14 SHV has 100 MOA,
the 5-20 SHV has 80 MOA.
-
And it has 20 moa in the reticle
-
The action I bought has a 20 moa rail on it.

Bushnell DMR

I just bought my Pentax spotter from them.
Good deals.

Used is basically as good as new. Best advice I've seen is a used NF. :twocents:

Used NF NXS off snipershide.

Say he chooses a scope with marginal MOA, how well do adjustable bases work? Do you think it's better to look for a scope with more MOA?

A 30mm scope is plenty of adjustment out to a mile. If the OP is looking for ELR I would definitely pick up a 34mm scope. In that case and his budget, a Bushnell DMR or HDMR wild be my choice. If at any way possible, I'd drop another $300 and get a used Steiner T5Xi 5-25 over the DMR any day.

Found a scope . Bought a used ( less then 40 rounds sighted in with it mounted) Nightforce SHV 5-20x56 with the MOAR redical. Scope, rings ( vortex. Might upgrade later.) , shipped for under $1000. There are so many choices it's hard to figure out what to get. I can give it a try and always upgrade someday if I find more money someplace .
The three I came down to
Nightforce SHV 5-20x56
Vortex Viper PST
VX-6
Thanks for all the information. Hopefully I made a good pick. Should be here later this week.

Your vortex rings are fine. They're made by Seekins.
