Title: My backpacking set up
Post by: seth30 on May 15, 2015, 09:08:24 PM
Just got back from a military detachment, and leave again in a few weeks.  However on the return I plan on doing a weekend hike in the cascades.  TBAR and The Skybuster really helped me out last year with hiking and I learned more from them than any youtube video or book. I have always been a hands on guy :chuckle:  This is my current setup pic by pic.  Looking for any extra inputs.  Current weight is 28 lbs in the backpack.  Not pictured in the photos are;

Head lamp
Hoodie (will also be my pillow)
Fire starter bricks
Glock 29
Bottle of whiskey (sorry already drank the display model :tung:)

I do not have a navigation unit or a water filtration unit.  I boil all of my water but do plan on buying a filtration unit for those times that instant water is a must.  I forgot to add a flash light to the mix and usually have one in the side pocket.  Looking for any inputs from the experienced backpackers.  Thanks for reading the post and any inputs

Far easier to carry a filter instead of carrying heavy fuel to boil water. I have a sawyer filter that weighs next to nothing and you can find it for around 30$. Is that all your food? I'd go nuts eating nothing but mountain house. Good for dinner though. You carry a whole flashlight or a headlamp?

Welcome back Seth!  I'd replace the baby powder with gold bond powder.  Same concept but I really like gold bond.  Also you can get purification tablets (they taste bad) until you get a filter.

The mountain house is backup for when my fishing skills fail me :chuckle:  I plan on picking a filter up when I am in Nevada next month.

On a note of the water filtration system. Walmart has the "mini sawyer" for 19.99. If you went with aquamarine tablets. I carry single packages of Propel or Crystal light to break up the taste.

I also gave up the saw a few years back for a Mini Gerber Axe, to me it's has a lot more usage then the saw.

And where is the "Knife?"

I would make sure I have new good 4# line on your reel.  Those setups usually come with really heavy crummy line that wont cast.  Get some 4# Ande and you will cast 3 times further.

Maybe ditch the cotton tees / underwear for synthetic or wool - Nike Dryfit, firstlite wool, or exofficio ?

If you chafe alot, this stuff works 10x better than any powders. And you can get a backpacking size stick at REI, Sports Authority etc.

 :yeah:

The Nike Dryfit work really well for me. Tried UA and those didn't. Want to try the Exofficio line.

I'd not take deodorant. Put some baking powder in a sock and knot it. You can dab it anywhere on your body to freshen up. Kills odor.

Put the Mtn. House in quart Ziplocs with the desicate pouch. You can boil right in the Ziploc. Substantially easier to pack before and after eating.

Don't take the tent bag/packaging if you don't have to. Replace cotton  clothes with wool or synthetic. Why the saw?  I don't carry one anymore and don't miss it.

I read this post too quickly and came away thinking this was your whole packing list. It gave me a kind of bemused respect.

that looks like 230g fuel, you dont need that much even for a week. get the small can.
also i would bring other food too, some snack type food and even a couple pb and j.
looks pretty good otherwise, alot of extraneous items but after a trip or two, you'll decide if you want to continue carrying them.

Do you know how to cook the fish you catch?   (without the pan)  or are you packing something to cook them with the pan?

Personal preference here. I would ditch the powders and use petroleum jelly for the chafing. You can get a small container that will last several trips. It also doubles for Firestarter material.

Yes butter, last hike my buddy brought some.  That would have been awkward to be without it. Thanks for the info, it will be added to my list along with salt and pepper.

I have some braided line i really want to try on that line.  It works great for my normal poles, just haven't had the excuse to switch over :chuckle:  Yeah after the last camping trip were it was raining half the time, cotton was not really the best of decisions.  Thanks for the input I will add that to the list of needs for the next trip.

A couple more things I really enjoy on my trips. #1 a Sven saw. Can get them at REI for like 30bucks.. Makes firewood for a week long trip a breeze! Super light weight and folds up almost into nothing. #2 Aqua Mirra water drops. Come in extremely small and light little bottles. Mix the two together and then dump in your water and 15 min later you're drinking safe water that has zero bad taste.  You may have to look on-line for it, it's like 15 bucks, and I really love them.. I think there's enough for like 150 gallons of water with one set.. I have a sawyer filter as well that I just put on my hydration bladder hose, but if you don't wat a filter the Aqua Mirra drops are great and have ZERO taste at all!

That doesn't seem like enough toilet paper.  Especially with that much Mountain House in the pack! :o

Folded up blue shop paper towels can double as TP (even wet) and kitchen cleanup.  Just make sure not to use the same one for both doodies ;)

I have had several messed up trips and years of packing to refine my pack to the style I like so here's just a few things that may help. Cooking.
1)  When I did plan on eating fish I used a sm squeeze bottle (2-4oz)with olive oil, zip lock of pancake mix (dust fish with)and aspirin bottle of mrs dash seasoning also sm. cheap teflon pan wipe it out with moss forget paper towels.
I cook over a very small fire if cooking food ie,. bear, fish, grouse.

Stove/mess kit
 2)  20 Years ago I used a MSR whisperlite stove now relegated to snowshoeing only (too heavy), then a stansport scorpion w/fuel stove broke down flat fit in sm. pot mess kit. The last 15 yrs. I use a .04oz pepsi can stove, small squeeze bottle of denatured alcohol and a 4cp titanium pot this holds my foil windscreen, alum pot stand, alum spoon, 1cp plastic mess cup stove sits inside, bic lighter pot lid go's on and into pots stuff sack. I only use stove for making hot water for tea or rehydrating freeze dried meals/top raman or hot cereal I can also fry in the pot if needed. I really only use stove for making hot water.

Tent
3) Most of my trips are solo and I need a place to organize my gear but not have room for anyone else so a 1-1/2 man modified tent tall enough to sit up in works well  so I use a 75.00 Coleman Cobra 2 season tent.
ground cloth. buy a small cheap tarp, slide it under your tent and mark all around tent then cut it 3" inside your lines all around it.
My main interest today is scouting for hunting or hunting in which I will have to pack out an animal and gear which may be 2 trips of 80-100lbs each so volume and weight of main gear must be LIGHT as POSSIBLE.

Now you add that you're taking kids!  What are they carrying? Try not to duplicate much in their packs. Make them share the load.  Saw is OK. Have you ever cut wood with it? And I like a bigger knife than what's on a multi tool. You only need one pot with lid to boil water for the MH or to drink, but as others have said, a filtration system is bestest... If you're going to boil water you'll need more fuel. A waste. And drinking boiled water when you want to cool off and refresh.. Well it just ain't the same. unscented BABY WIPES! (in a Ziploc bag) Ditch the fish scale/tape and hook remover. Forceps have many more uses. Use a sharpie pen and mark inches on your fishing pole if you really feel the need to measure your fish. Cell phone/CAMERA...  Salt/Pepper/butter mixed in a squirt bottle. -for that fish. Cook your fish in Aluminum foil on the coals of a fire. Trail mix. Jerky. Dried Mangos.

Did I miss (paper) MAP AND COMPASS?   Look up TEN ESSENTIALS...  You've got most of that covered but I don't see sunglasses/sun screen. Benadryl, Tylenol, Ibuprophen. (Maybe in that first aid kit)?

-Steve
