Title: Idaho Bear Hunting
Post by: Machias on May 16, 2015, 06:07:52 PM: So I packed in another load of bait this morning and when I get to the site, my bait barrel is GONE!! Yikes! I had the barrel chained and padlocked to the tree. Then I look over and my trail camera is gone! Yikes!!!!!! I look about 30 yards down the hill and there is my barrel. The chain I used had a swivel in the middle and they managed to straighten out the J hook. Luckily one half was plenty to go around the tree so it is padlocked again and should remain there. So I look for my camera and it is at the bottom of the tree it was attached to. I changed out the SD card, checked for damage, some slobber marks but no damage thankfully. Re-baited and headed to the truck. I was hoping they didn't mess with the camera first before the barrel. Got to the truck and fired up the laptop and had 668 photos!!! Wohoo. The time is wrong on the camera, it's still on East Coast time, so take 3 hours off.

Post by: Machias on May 16, 2015, 06:24:03 PM: The bait is, 30 pounds of caramel popcorn, 30 pounds of cookies, trail mix combo, 4 gallons of blue frosting, 2 gallons of maple syrup, 20 pounds of jelly candy slices, 4 pounds of raspberry pie filling. I stopped on my way through Wisconsin and bought 600 pounds of bulk bear bait from this guy. http://bobsbearbait.com/

I got a 55 gallon barrel of the dry bear bait. It's smells great! Mine has very little chocolate in it. I didn't want much if any as it can be harmful to the bears. http://bobsbearbait.com/shop/bear-scents/bobs-special-dry-bait-mix/

if even looked at half I'd be even heavier than those bears :chuckle: you had me worried at the everything was missing part. Was beginning to wonder if this person showed up at the site :sry:

You're making me hungry :chuckle:. There are a few guys who have a slip at the family marina back there who swear by bobs. Sure wish baiting was legal in washington.

I hate to be a tease because you'll have to wait a day or so until I can get to some Wi-Fi, but he is HUGE!!!!!! Makes all the bears above look like cubs, heck he make the barrel look tiny!!!

I have one bait near there, it has not been hit yet, but the last time I baited that spot it took the bears a week to hit it.

I also found out the 3 color phase bears that keep showing up together is in fact a nice sow with two 2 year old cubs. We'll be leaving her alone. I hope you enjoy the photos, my oldest son flies in tomorrow night and we finally get to start hunting them on Weds. Oh and bait #2 finally got hit yesterday, but I don't have a camera on it.

Post by: Machias on May 21, 2015, 07:04:26 AM: The wind is killing us, changed direction 5 times yesterday. saw 4 bears and all four winded us. 2 little guys were in bow range but turned and ran when the wind swirled. can't remember a time when it blew out of the NE for sooo many days.

As we are leaving the truck I discover the old treestand has a hairline crack completely through the cam buckle that holds it to the tree. Would have stepped on it and plunged straight to the ground. I always step on the stand and then wrap my safety harness strap around the tree. I'm going to have to stop that practice. so I hike in with my son, get him setup and re-bait and head to the truck. he has a young black sow and 2 red cubs come in. He got to watch a fun show.

Post by: Machias on May 23, 2015, 05:17:57 PM: Nice bear down. What an experience. We had shifting winds again, but luckily we had a nice shower roll through and really cool things down. We had 2 small bears come into the bait, a red and a black. Then right at 6:45 a very pretty red cinnamon bear walked in. Beautiful thick coat. Roughly 125-130 pounds. Mike was using the only gun I have out here his Grandfather's 12 ga pump with rifled slugs. Blew out both lungs. The bear only ran about 40 yards and gave out a short death moan. Nice young boar with really one of the nicest coats I've seen on one. It was awesome being in a stand just a few feet away and get to watch it all happen.

I can't help but smile thinking that after all the troubles in getting things started a father got to watch his son shoot a bear with grandpa's gun! The image in my mind is of the two of you sitting side-by-side with the spirit of Granddad hovering behind with his arms around you both. What an awesome experience!

Post by: Machias on May 25, 2015, 10:48:31 PM: Well bait #1 has really shut down, went from 8 different bears on the bait to 1 that showed up and spent 45 minutes in the middle of the night last night. I think a combination of 2 straight nights of swirling winds and shooting one bear at the site and having a bear shot about 200 yards away has really sent them packing. Going to hunt bait #2 tomorrow and pull that barrel when we are done hunting and then I'll have one more night to hunt on bait #1 and then it's the long drive back to Virginia. I am remaining optimistic!!

At about 5:10 decided to make a run for the truck since we were right in the middle of a lightening cell, made it halfway and got pummeled by some big painful hail and a heavy downpour. I can handle rain, but I do not mess around in a treestand and holding a bow with arrows in a lightening storm!

Went to pull bait #2 today and the barrel was gone from it's spot and rolled about 300 yards down the hill. I'll have to post a photo of the damage this bear done to a 55 gallon steel barrel. I'll have to come back next spring and see if I can locate him. WOW!

Post by: Machias on May 31, 2015, 10:53:39 AM: 2745 miles there, with a side trip up in Wisconsin to pick up bear bait and 2635 miles back. The rest was running back and forth between WA and ID. I also lost 16 pounds packing in bear bait. Feel great!

I did learn something the hard way, although it was a lesson I should have known before learning it. NEVER eat a truck stop hotdog. Spent the last 2 days of my drive with food poisoning. Ugh
