How big?
This is my first bear on cam, so I do not have anything to compare to. About 10' or less from the cam.
thanks.

I'm no pro but looks pretty good size. Real stalky and smallish ears towards the side of his head.
-
That's a freaking dandy.

:yeah:
Love the solid black on that guy. That bear would make an awesome looking rug!
-
I would say a male, hard to tell length by positioning but definitely I think between 5 1/2 - 6ft in there. Good bear, looks like hes got a nice hide on him to!
-
A mature boar but not above average. :twocents:

I'd say that's a 200 lb ish bear. Quite a bit bigger in the fall. About average for a mature WA bear. If I was still in my bear killing years I would probably take him but it would depend on how far into the season it was. Definitely a nice one. Just my opinion.
-
He definitely looks big from the front. He is thick up to the neck and his shoulders are very wide.
-
Thanks everyone. Yeah he was standing 5-10' in front of the cam. Funny that pic was taken 60min after I put up the cam. No sign or trails around. Just some poop in the general area.
So 3-400 lbs is a big bear for WA?
-
That's a lot bigger than your average Washington mature bear. A true 300 lbs is a big WA bear. 400 lbs is very rare. :twocents:

Yes 3-400 lbs is BIG for WA. No way is that bear anywhere near that big. I've killed several 300+ lbs and this guy is not near that. My biggest in WA went a little over 400 and looked like a VW bug. The vast majority of 300 lb bears killed by hunters are, in reality, 200 lbs.
-
I think 200 lbs. is above average for a WA spring bear! 150-170 is closer to average IMO.
-

3-400# is a big bear no matter where you are...except on the internet of course!
He is definitely above average in my book. I'm not taking a second look before pulling the trigger!
-
i would bet he weighs in at 350 pounds, definetly a nice bear, i love how dark he is..
-
add the poop that followed...
-
Well, I was guessing 300lbs too, but after looking at his backside, I could go a little lighter for sure. I base my vast knowledge on TV hunting shows though, and one dead two-year-old that barely broke a hundred pounds.
Whatever the case is on the weight issue, the real question is: Now that you have him on your cam, what are you going to do about it???? :dunno: :chuckle:
-
expand the search around the area...setup my other 3 cams, wait until Aug 1
-
Nice bear. The answer is big enough to shoot!

Looks big to me  My wife say's size doesn't matter :dunno:

So I as on my way out from picking up my cams [and seeing very little on the cams] when I saw an area from the road that looked really open and sloping down...so I walked in, then saw the area pictured on those pics, which is 20 yards off the graveled path...
Nice wide open area, lots of green food, but no trails, no sign.
It was hot and I was feeling lazy, so I setup the cam just to see if I'd catch anything moving through.
Those pics are time stamped an hour after I deployed the cam...
Makes me wonder if he was smelling me there and came over to investigate.
-
Bears are funny. I get them on cam from time to time, but never more than just one visit past the cam per each bear - at least that's the case over the last 4 -5 years. I don't use bait, so I assume that means the bear's den is quite a ways away from the cam. (?)
I'd shoot your bear in a heartbeat! (come 1 August)
-
That bear is way bigger than 200lbs he's atleast 300 but more in the 350 range. I just shot a big spring bear and this bear is close to it and my cape with head in it was 92 lbs.
-
He is above average for sure. But hair plays a huge part of how big they appear and he appears to have great hair.. No hesitation on the trigger on that one.
-
how much weight, can a bear like that, put on in 3-4 months?
-
Big enough.

Is this a 400 pounder. I call him big head. Good bear, but not a 400 pounder.
-
If his body catches up to his head he'll probably get to 400# :chuckle:
-
A 400lb bear is huge. That is in the 200's still I think. When you get a 400lb bear on cam youl be like holy crap! Thats a huuuuuge bear!
-
I think in the fall he will go into the 300# range comfortably. And hopefully by then his hair will start to grow back on his neck and side. Should be a beautiful specimen by end of September

I agree. Good sized bear and with a good food supply he could be in the mid 300's by fall.

Im with Rad on this one. Wait til he's had his fat butt in the tree tops for a couple of months then put him in the freezer (the bear... not Rad)
Dandy bear, nice pics.

This bear (or others in this area) are starting to eat berries. Was out last week and saw tons of flat grass below berry bushes. Then the crap on the road that followed.
Think deer will hang around bears?
-
They absolutely will hang around bears. I was filming a couple of big bucks a few years back during bear season when I saw a big bear step out of the brush only 20 yds away from the deer. I turned off the camera real quick, shot the bear, and turned it back on in time to watch the bucks walk over and check him out. I prolly shouldn't have shot him because I never saw those deer again.
