Research starts now, but I have a buddy who drew a books rifle elk tag and they are already scouting it they will be keeping an eye out for good bucks. I also have a buddy that has the archery deer tag and is going to share whatever he learns and sees down there.

Im looking at the roadless section to get away.

Muzzle loader season is prime. You cant worry about what other people are going to kill before you get there. Just show up and give it an honest 100% you wont be disappointed you picked the Bookcliffs.

Post by: Skyvalhunter on May 20, 2015, 05:41:23 AM: If an outfitter is out of the question than i would say the Roadless area should also be out of the question. Just for safety and the logistics of the hunt. Bitter creek south is a much better choice for a diy hunter.

I would do everything i could to be deadly out to 200. I know that sounds like a long ways, but it is where you need to be. Unless you are very good at calling bulls into you you will be atleast 150 or more on most encounters.

I only had 5 pts this year so i got really lucky. In a unit where there is only 1 tag its all random draw

Post by: huntnnw on June 07, 2015, 10:41:08 PM: I have gotten a ton of help from some locals that have hunted the roadless area with maps with exact locations where to hunt. I am going all in on the roadless area as I know when it comes having to hike it cuts way down on pressure and with only 80 muzzy tags I should be able to have some areas all to myself and find areas that archery guys haven't touched. I have areas that are anywhere from 5 mi in to 12 mi in to look at. I am hoping to get down there in the end of July to scout. Taking my Gopro and adapter for spotter and hope for some cool video. Ill also be there 5 days before the opener to hopefully find a opening day shooter.

Post by: huntnnw on August 24, 2015, 10:09:56 PM: its getting closer! I met a gun builder last year on Bullblasters moose hunt in ID and was friends on fb. He contacted me and asked me if I wanted to use a custom Vortex viper 1-4X scope that has be customized for UT that the magnifier ring does nothing it stays a 1x. I picked it up and its never been mounted and quite a nice gesture from someone I barely know. I can also use 209 primers and Blackhorn 209 powder which is a smokeless substitute. I got gun dialed in to about 250 yards will be max range. Shooting 100 gr of Blackhorn and 290gr Barnes T-EZ bullets. This poweder is awesome you can shoot 50 shots without cleaning the bore ever..I shot 17 in a row with no change in the bore.

I have 2 archery hunters who have tagged out in the last week that are sharing what they know about the unit, plus I have some areas that Ill be heading to that I was told about by some locals.

The other guy had 8 stalks in 3 days and blew it on the biggest buck of his life and some others in the 170" range

But I also think they will be more spread out. Cannot say I have seen a monster this year in scouting. I just have been looking for fun because I do not have the tag. But there are lots of really nice bucks.

I think guys with max points should get 75% of the permits, and this is coming from someone who puts in for permits when he remembers or can afford it, I try to always get the kids in.. sorry definitely not thread jacking.. good luck, I have seen a few absolute toads come out of Utah!!
