So I need to cut some cost this year, and glass is where it's getting cut, buying new pack and boots which I think are more crucial to my overall enjoyment of hunting.
Haven't even started wading through the piles of low end binoculars out there, but my old let polls aren't cutting it, I'm hoping to get some 10x as the 8x I have now weren't quite enough, especially in low light.
If you had say 150-200 to spend, what would you buy, to get you through one year, knowing they will be hand outs or backups after this season?

Vortex diamond back are hard to beat.

:yeah: x2

I'd stick with 8x in low priced binoculars. A great binocular is the Leupold Yosemite. They're a porro prism, so you get more for your money, as they are cheaper to make than the roof prisms that most everyone is using nowadays.
For just over $100 you can't beat these:

The leupold yosemite are almost identical to my 8x wind rivers, wonder if they are the same thing with a different name? My wind rivers lasted me 14 years or so :dunno:
I wouldn't hate another pair of 8x I guess. I guess a trip to sportsmans is in order.

I agree with that. Cheaper glass is dark enough without the light issues with higher power. Binoculars.com is having an Overstock sale right now. Some really good deals in this price range.

Re conditioned Nikon monarchs. Great glass. Horrible eye cups.

I have a pair of Alpen 10x, they are no swaros or even nikon but for cheap glass they have served me well. I keep saying I am going to upgrade but just can't bring myself to spend the kind of coin that high end binos require.

I bought the Bushnell compact water proof set and am very impressed. I like wide field of view for scanning and this set is light and good enough for my use. I bought them at Big 5 for $90.00.

I don't mean to sound snobby, because believe me, I have used cheap binos. That is, until I could afford good ones. I would rather hunt in my tennis shoes and use an old army packboard before I'd go back to cheap binoculars.
-
I'd rather enjoy my time outdoors, comfortable boots and pack will go further towards that goal then a pair of ziess glass will. IMHO that is.
-
Leupold has some pretty good low end stuff.

:yeah:
Huge fan of my Nikon Monarchs. Had to send in for new eye cup, they replaced no charge though.
Haven't compared to diamondbacks though, they might be a better bang for the buck. :dunno:
-
I bought some Nikon Monarch 5 bino's awhile back after checking out a friends Monarchs. Several seasons in the POURING Raymond, WA area and they have never fogged up and work great. Light weight too.

What style of hunting do you do? I agree that the vortex diamondback is a good glass for your price range and chances are you wouldn't make them a handout after this year ( if you did you would be the pay-it-forward-legend!) But I can also understand buying nice glass and hunting in cheap boots. You'll only get a year out of the boots but I've seen some comfortable, light weight boots for $50. Do you get wet, hunt high, in the snow, desert, open or dense terrain?
-
Deer hunt the desert, late muzzle loader doe hunts. Elk hunt rimrock during modern, and will be pursuing bear in 117 this year. I also use them scouting waterfowl, and coyote hunting.
I can't run cheap boots unfortunately, size 15 doesn't exist in a 1/2 way comfortable boot. I have a leupold spotter also, forgot to mention that before.
-
Oh and when I say hand me down, I mean to my son, he's taking an interest to going out with us, and he's about mature enough to handle hunter safety and being in the feild.
-
I know all about the large size boots! Its a pain to find them. I'd say get the 10x42 vortex so he can have a good bino that will work in almost any situation for years to come. Can't beat a vortex warranty for the price. :twocents: my son is 10 and in the same situation. He will use my vortex diamondbacks when I upgrade to HD.
-
well you have a ton of choices given to you, might as well give you one more. Steiner 8X32 predators, I have a pair that I've spent many hours looking through. No eye strain, clear and worth every penny. I think I spent 165 on them at the sportmans show in Puyallup.

This wouldn't be a bad route to take. Also Leupold has a no fault transferable warranty.

I have a pair of burris 8 power binos they are decent for sure. still use them to keep in my truck.

I recently purchased a set of binoculars but while doing research it seems that the best set in your price range is probably Sightron SII Blue Sky. They have lots of great comparison reviews on Birdform and other sites.

I have not tried a Sightron binocular, but their rifle scopes are quite impressive.

I use vortex diamond backs and love them.

And yet again for Diamondbacks!

Just be sure and try the Leupold Yosemite's that I recommended before you get the Diamondbacks. They're half the price. I've had both.

:yeah: I have the 10x42's great glass, and compact enough. I've looked through the Vortex HD bino's and found they actually hurt my eyes while other high end HD's do not, soemthing to think about when you start looking into HD's. I love the diamondbacks though, for the price and quality in a 10x they are hard to beat IMHO.
-
Maybe i am biased nikon fan but i have there atb in a 10x50, a little bulky but its was one of the few i found my eyes comfortable looking through and easy to focus. I use glasses most of the time so eye relief and being able to comfortably focus was my main thing. I also recently got binos for my wife this last fall and she settled on some nikon prostaff 7 in 10x42 for $100 on a black friday deal so that was hard to pass up. And their warranty stuff was pretty straight forward when i sent mine in to get my eye cups fixed. We also looked at the diamondbacks and i liked them however the binos werent gonna be meant for my eyes so we went with my wife was most comfortablen in. Both pairs we have retail for under $200. One of these days ill pony up and get something better but these do good for now and i dont feel so bad when they get beat up or tossed around the back seat by my kids when were out and about.
-
More expensive binos are better... but HD glass hasn't been around forever and somehow game animals were still killed.
Vortex Diamondbacks will get the job done nicely in this price range

:yeah: my middle son just got these on the deal of the day at cameraland for 129.99. My oldest has diamondbacks and I think the Minox are better. Don't think you can find better for that much money and the boys at cameraland are topnotch. :twocents:
-
Minox does make good bino's. I'd probably get those for $150 over the Diamondbacks.
-
I had the Diamondbacks and for that money I would probably buy them again. Better idea would be to go through your garage, list some stuff on eBay and at least move up to the Talon HDs. Night and day difference.

Bought a pair of diamondback 8x28 Friday at cabelas for $145. Used them a few times this weekend and was impressed. Good quality for the price
-
I decided to take Bobcats advice and bought a pair of the Leupold Yosemites from Amazon. Got them over the weekend and am very impressed, especially for the price. I seem to go thru a lot of binos., always leaving them out in the rain or snow on my deck or just plain loosing them. I'll keep these as a spare pair at the house, but they seem so nice and clear I may actually take them out on a hunt. Binos are like measuring tapes to me, can't ever seem to find em when you need em because I'm always laying them down in some strange place. Thanks for the recommend Bobcat!

Gents, followed the thread. After looking at the various models, went with the Alpen shasta ridge in 10x42. Compared them to the leupold McKenzies. Alpens were on sale at Costco for 99.99. sale goes till 6/21.
They are a nice set for the price. Very happy with them. If I was going to carry in the field more, would have went with the leupolds. Specs say a 4 oz difference in weight.

I've used my 10 x 42 Vortex Diamondbacks for the past two years and have been very happy with them. Great value for the money - I'd buy them again.....

I bought a pair of vortex diamondback 10x42's for me then a couple months later bought the Leupold Yosemites for my wife as she liked the compact size.... they are both great i actually almost like hers better I would not feel disadvantaged with either one
