My son just started hunter education classes yesterday. Watching the videos sure did bring back vivid memories of my father taking me 20 years ago, and alll the hunts we have had together over the years. So i basically i have come up with 3 questions:

Shot my first deer at age 5 with my grandfather's 32 spec with a side mount scope. Three deer in a line. Aimed at the first one, pulled the trigger and the third one dropped when I skipped it off his back, a quick follow up shot took care of the situation. 4 years later South Carolina started hunters Ed so I took the class then.

See a lot of dates here that tell me a lot about the folks that hunt in WA.
1. A lot of folks apparently didn't grow up in a hunting family or were to slow to understand that guns kill. Why else would anyone take a course that wasn't required? Born before 1 January 1972 you don't need to take the course. So all you folks that took the course in the early to mid 70's at the ages of 8 to 13 and those that took it before that even DUH figured things out yet?
Being born in the 40's maybe we didn't need a government class to tell us which end of a gun the bullet comes out of and how to handle firearms safely.
Killed first deer in 1962 fork horn in MI first Time hunting 1956 Pheasant 410/22 over under that I still have

Although I was required to take the course, missed the cut off just barley, I still remember it to this day. As a kid it was fun to go to a class every night for a couple of weeks with a bunch of other kids my age. We got to shoot at an indoor range and had a good time. I knew enough about gun safety to get me by before the class, but a little extra instruction never hurt.
I look back on it as a positive learning experience and as a kid, you can never have enough of those.
-
1976 14 years old I went with My Dad that fall Elk Hunting On Bethel Ridge Boy I miss Him Now :'(
-
Jingles,
Even in the 60's you had to pass hunters Ed to hunt. The 1972 thing is based on age now, so if you are 43 or older you don't have to take the course now
-
6. Harvested little whitetail buck that year

I took it in 1979, at a sporting goods store in Federal Way. And yes, it was required if you were under 18 and wanted to hunt. Sure, I was born before 1972 so I could have hunted without having taken a hunter education course- but I would have had to wait until after I turned 18.
My dad really only took my brother and I bird hunting at first, until we went to Montana in 1983 for deer and antelope. I was 15 and I remember that because I didn't yet have a drivers license but my dad let me drive. It got interesting going through Idaho as there was a big earthquake. I was swerving all over the road and couldn't figure out why. My brother had his turn driving during the earthquake as well. My dad finally took over since neither of us could keep it on the road. We didn't realize there had been an earthquake until later that night when we heard about it on the news.

Took the class in the late 60's :yike: 4 hour class, consisting of 2 hours of story telling and how a rifle works and 2 hours of shooting 22's in the basement shooting range at the Lake Chelan community building!!
First deer hunt(by myself) was a 3 point opening day opening hour 1972, shot another one same place the following year, and missed one at the same place the third year :dunno:
Became a Hunter Ed instructor when I had a friend call me up and ask, "whats this deal about handguns not needed for hunting being taught by a local instructor??" Oh ya, I LOVE handguns!!! plus rifles, shotguns, muzzle loaders!! :chuckle:
Been doing it for over 25 years now, classes are now about 20 hours long! :yike: I'd quit but for the "kids" I've stayed, I can do without the "politics" out of Olympia!! >:(

In the left wing state of CA even in the late forties and early fifties if you wanted to hunt (quail, dove, ducks, deer you had to take the all day class or no license! Not everyone of the forum was fortunate enough to be born in this state.

No one with a responsible parent has ever needed the government for a class and education. But, my parents and grand parents weren't about to make me wait another nine years to start hunting. And if you wanted to hunt at age nine it was required. No Hunters Ed certificate = No hunting license! As with any mandatory test I didn't learn a dang thing I didn't already know. But heck, I was hunting so I was thrilled to have an opportunity to take the test.
When we moved to Oregon I found out I was no longer old enough to hunt big game. Had to wait a year to hunt deer again. Was able to hunt birds though. Dad and I took out our frustrations by putting a LARGE dent in the coastal grouse and quail population ;)
-
2005 I passed my test, but the first hunt I ever went on I was 6 with my dad and he busted a 3x1. my first deer was in 2006 and it was a mulie doe with a .243 Winchester, shot it twice once at 300yrds. and second at about 30.
-
"A long time ago."
And yes, there were far more hunting related shooting incidents in the 50s and 60's before hunter education became mandatory.
-
Took hunters ed in 1953---age 11
Hunted ducks for 4 years with my uncle.
Hunted deer first time in 1957
Still have the hunters ed patch on a shell vest.
-

When did the " 400 Square inches of Hunters Orange" become a rule?
-
I went to hunters ed in 86 I was 11 and killed my first blacktail that year, a huge ole spike x2 pt :chuckle: I had been with my dad before that when he had killed a couple bucks, he always took me grouse huntn and band tail pigeon huntn.. I miss those days, grouse were everywhere as well as pigeons..
-
Got the pic :chuckle: :chuckle:
-
I guess I did it backwards. I was born before 1972 so it was not required. I went through hunter safety with a lot of the kids. I took the test on recommendation because in order to hunt out of state you still need a hunter safety certificate ( I think it was the only test I ever Aced!). I haven't used it yet ( no out of state hunting) but that same day I decided to take the course for Hunter Ed., I was helping any ways so this way I was acknowledged. I Took hunter safety around 2005 with my 2nd child, shot my first deer 1992ish a 2 point mulie with a Remington model 94 30-30 with a cheap scope at age 27ish. Love being in the woods!
-
I'm 50 years Old, Born and Raised in Federal Way Washington. Started hunting with my dad when I was 7 years old, and yes I carried his Model 94. I can not remember taking a hunter safety course until I took on in 2006 with my two boys so they could hunt in Nevada.
If I ever took it, this state has no record of it :dunno:
That's my story and I'm stickin to it.
-
1981 ...1st deer was a PA Whitetail - 8 Point with my bow ... :archery_smiley:
-
I think 1967
I think I was born that year :chuckle:

Hunter Ed in 1986 age 13
First deer in 1999 3x3 Muley/Blacktail out of Yakima area
My first rifle Savage model 110 in .270 win
-
Took the test in 1978 so I could hunt with my dad. I was 10.
Harvested my first animal a year later. Whitetail doe near Curlew.
Shot it with my open sight 30-30 Winchester.
Yesterday, my daughter (now age 10) passed the written portion of her hunter safety test. (Got 74 out of 75 right!)
Today, she passed the field portion of her hunter safety test.
She's a great kid and has accomplished a lot at her young age, but I don't think I've ever been prouder as a parent than I was tonight. We're both excited to start planning our first hunting trip! :)
-
 awesome. I got 2 girls and I can't wait to get the hunting with me.
-

When did the " 400 Square inches of Hunters Orange" become a rule?
I know that for upland birds, we didn't have to wear orange until sometime in the late 80's/early 90's. I remember buying a nice new brown hunting vest (mail order from Cabelas) and the very next year I couldn't use it anymore because of the orange law. :(
I think as long as I've been hunting in this state orange has been a law for deer/elk hunting. :dunno:

I remember deer hunting in Teanaway in 1989 or 1990 and running into another hunter way up on the mountain, where I expected to be all alone, especially since this was in the middle of the week and all the camps that had been there were gone. Anyway, talked to this guy for a few minutes, and I remember the first thing he said was something like "man you're crazy for not wearing orange!" I told him I never see anyone hunting up here and I'm not worried about it, besides there's no law that requires orange. I'm pretty sure I didn't even own an orange vest back then. I think orange became law shortly after that.

Oh, so maybe for upland and big game, orange became a requirement at the same time. That could be right. I do remember one of the most common hunting color clothes back then was the old plaid black and red coats.

My first hunting jacket was a red & black woolrich jacket - size 36. I don't think I could even get one arm in it these days.

My 8 year old son Elijah scored a 72 of 75 today and passed the written test! I took it for fun and got 75 of 75. I am SO PROUD of my boy!!! If the "field day" goes well tomorrow then he's the newest hunter in the family.
-
Elijah Gomez is my newest hunting partner! He passed his field day, and graduated the course at the age of 8. Many hunts upcoming for my little man, watch out Michael Waddell. :chuckle: :IBCOOL:

Isn't it a hell of a feeling! I was sweating bullets earlier this year when my 8yr old daughter took the written since she sometimes has trouble reading but she spent every extra minute after class studying and practicing the handling stuff and nailed it then nailed the field course. She was the youngest and smallest kid in the class! Probably one of the proudest moments of my life! Luckily she passed before special permits dates and she was able to put in for permits! She drew a youth yale deer tag! I'm super stoked to get out with her opening day of deer season!

That's awesome guys! Congrats on your new hunting partners. that's what its all about right there!

1995 age 12
Twin City shotgun club
PSE hand-me-down must of weighed 12 lbs with a 40% letoff
Blacktail doe 15 yds age 12
Went to hunting camp in Champion (Kapowsin) after school that first Friday of the season (season already started during the week) and had a deer in the back of the truck by dusk. Shot the first legal thing I saw :chuckle: Best eating deer I've ever harvested to this day. 'Ol Hanz and Vita were smiling almost as big as I was when I checked that deer through the gate.

Moved to WA from AZ in 1969, 16 years old. Mule deer yearling after dad killed the doe. Winchester 32 special. Dad wasn't able to hunt much after that year. Miss him. Amazing the places we went with a 2 wheel drive pickup.

Fall of 95' 2x1 blacktail

Going way back into the archives here, 1972. In Oregon at that time you had to be twelve to hunt, so I took hunters ed in the spring and hunted that fall. Didn't get my first buck until 1976 though.
-
Took the class in 1986 when I was 18 (grew up in an anti-hunting family, asked for a .22 every year from 12 on, bought my own guns and took hunter safety when I turned 18).
First kills were small game and game birds, first deer was a whitetail doe in 1987, with my grandfather's Model 94 .30/30.
Took the class again in 1996 with my bride.
Sat through the class again in 2008 with my son.
My mom still says her biggest disappointment in me is when I bought a gun and killed an animal. I tell her she's lucky that's the biggest disappointment I've caused her :)

Kind of an old thread but here goes:
Took the class in 1968(?) and tagged my first deer in 1969 bowhunting in the old Nason creek bowhunting only unit. Things were much different back then.

Hunter education I did in 1979, I think. If not it was 1980. First deer would have been in Montana in 1983.

Back in 1980. Killed my first deer in 1983 and have killed at least one deer a year(multiple states) since. This might be the first year I don't hunt and break that streak.
