Title: favorite 30-30 load for black bear?
Post by: superdown on June 10, 2015, 09:45:16 AM
I purchased a marlin 336ss a while back and put a 1.5-4x28 leupold scout scope on it. I am going to be using this setup for bear hunting this fall. So what is your favorite factory 30-30 load for black bear?

I’d go with a 170 g bullet – whatever brand your rifle likes best.  At 30-30 velocities premium bullets aren’t necessary.  Pointy tip bullets are a gimmick as well and won’t do anything to increase your range or terminal performance.

I’ve never fired my 30-30 at a bear but when I’ve carried it bear hunting I’ve had 170g Core Lokts in it.  I’ve fired 100’s of rounds through it on the range and they group as well as anything else.

I've got most of a box of lever evolution left and sighted the rifle in with some federal blue box. I am curious if any one has tried any of the X-bullet loaded ammo on game what the performance was?

Buffalo Bore makes a 190g JFN 30-30 round that they claim makes 2100fps.

"This new load utilizes a 190gr. custom Hawk bullet and gives the venerable 30-30 here-to-for unrealized power and is designed so that the person who owns a 30-30 can now reliably kill elk or moose sized game. The 30-30 can now be carried as a defensive tool in grizzly country and will be much more effective in stopping a grizzly attack than any other 30-30 ammunition in the world. This heavy 30-30 load is not designed for deer, although it will kill deer and if you line them up right, it will kill three or four deer with one shot………."

My father took a decent muley with the LeverEvolution ammo....It was in .308express out of his Marlin. He was a little forward....hit the shoulder square. Needless to say the deer hit the dirt hard and both front shoulders went to the dogs for scrap. They were blown up.

I need to look up my load data. Brother in law has a .30-30 and I'm hoping he takes a bear with it this season.

If your looking for a factory load, I'd go with the Remington 170gr. Round nose Soft point. I hunter with this round for years before I went to a .30/06.  I have killed 4 bears with this round, plus a Brown Bear when I lived in Alaska. All one round kills.

As far as the LeverEvolution ammo, Erin (Quick Draw) uses it in her 30-30 savage and like the way they shoot.

Seems like they are 170s but I'd have to go gander.

I use Leverevolution in my .338 Marlin Express. I like them.
