Well the drawing results aren't available quite yet but I'm trying to decide what rifle I should shoot my moose with. Should I make it a challenge and possibly end up with a smaller bull or should I go with something that will drop it instantly at a quarter mile?
My options:
.50 muzzleloader with 250 grain Thor bullet
Pre 64 Win. Model 94 in 30/30
.270 with 140 grain Barnes
30/06 with 180 grain Barnes
338 with 250 grain Nosler Partitions
-
.338
-
I think you should try and get to post # 28,000 today, keep it up, you have a chance!
-
I vote the Muzzleloader.
-
.338
:yeah:
-

Not enough time left in the day.
Which gun?
-
.338... Only because you don't have a 35 whelen listed.
-
My vote is the .270....but that is because I am a .270 guy!!! Next choice would be the muzzleloader.
-
If I am ever lucky enough to draw a tag I think it would be cool to try to take one with a muzzleloader. I would however have my 338 win mag availble just in case
-
.30-30, get right up in its face before you do the deed!
-
Bow
-
Shoot it with a .30-.30 right between the eyes because it's probably going to be a cow.
-
My vote would have to be a flip of the coin between the 30-30, or the .30/06
Hunterman(Tony)
-
Muzzleloader or 30-30

-
I am going to go with the 30-06 with the Barnes 180 grain for my trip to Idaho. Just got the custom turret for my scope and went with the Barnes factory loaded ammo.
-
.30-30.....sneak up to about 50 yards.....tuck that one round right in the sweet spot....Mr. Moose will walk about 15 yards and you can watch him tip. Oh, and film it please. No scope, open sights.
-

I'd be fine with an antlerless moose tag.
-
I'll let you use my .338 if I can come with on the hunt.
-
Since .45/70 wasn't listed then .338
YorkeTransport would probably recommend like a 50BMG with a couple of scoped .460 S&Ws on the hips in case of a charge. :chuckle:
-
I think a moose tag calls for an addition to the stable! A 375 would fit right in with your other bang sticks!
-
Worry about the tag first. And then call me.
-
I used a sharp stick, so what would I know.
-
:yeah: What those guys said
-
Bow for sure. Think of the expressions of awe! Oh yeah, baby.
-
A camera :dunno:
-
Why would you use a 180 gr Barnes in the 30-06? Use 150 gr or 168 gr Barnes, but the 180 would be going awfully slow in the 30-06.
That said, use the 338 WM and 250 gr Partition. :twocents:
-
treat yourself to a new gun 300 weatherby and 180 gr E-tips
-
I thought you had a bow, Bob?
If not, then the muzzleloader. That or a .257 Roberts.
-
I'd consider the bow. That would be cool. But for that I would've wanted to hunt early, when bulls can be called in. I only applied for late hunts.
-
Smoke pole  good luck in draw
-
I've always wanted to shoot something BIG with the 338. So if not hiking a long ways I'd probably go with that given the choices listed.
Though I would sure like to hear an Savora tipped arrow SMACK the rib cage of a big bull moose! Hoping that will happen some day before I die.
-
I'll use a 2 blade Zwickey in front of a 520 grain arrow out of a 54# ACS Longbow
-
Your choice should be the gun you are most comfortable with.
Best of luck on the moose tag👊
-
Well there is always what a few of your constituents from the west side chose. Bring all of it and then you will just need to hire either a few caddies, or gun bearers and packers. Also don't forget the Film Crew!!
338
-
Another vote for the 338, thats what I shot mine with, went 40 yards then piled up
-
When I draw this year I am thinking bow. Then when I find that big un I will back off and grab the .243.
-
:yeah:

:yeah:I would use my 375 Ruger Guide Gun with a 300gr. Nosler Accubond.
-
.338 with 225 gr Swift A-Frames. Get rid of the partitions.
-
Use your .270, that's what I'll use if I ever draw
-

I shot mine with a .270 Win. loaded with 130 grain Barnes TTSX bullets. One shot and he went about 5 yards and dropped, which if my math is correct, is 35 yards less than Bowhunter's bull he shot with with his .338. :chuckle: They aren't as tough as elk, so don't worry too much about it. Just make sure you have a clean shot and put it in the right spot. I actually wish I had gone ahead and used one of my .257 Roberts.
-
Bobcat, I just saw that you're headed to the Loser's Lounge, just like me. I guess your choice has been narrowed down to Nikon or Canon. :chuckle: Sorry, had to say it.
-
Good to hear that a 270 will work, but I guess this thread can now be removed since I didn't draw a moose tag. :bash:
Oh well, maybe next year.
-
Dad will be using the 6.5 x 55 and I'm seriously considering carrying my grandfather's old 30-30, or the 32 special.
-
"grandfather's old 30-30" I think that would be really cool.
-
Moose aren't that tough. A well placed shot with a good bullet in any big game caliber will work well. I'd probably want to at least use a .25 caliber and preferably larger. There's really no need for anything larger than .30 caliber, but if you want something bigger a moose makes a good excuse to do it.
-
Heck this year I am using a 375 Ruger for cow elk just because. Of course I am taking the 300 H&H along. But mainly want to use the 375. Last year I used the 375 Ruger on a damage deer control doe hunt. It worked better then the 270wsm for a blood shot meat. Use whatever your proficient with and put the bullet where it counts.
-

Lots, and I mean lots, of moose have fallen to the 6.5x55 in Scandinavia.
-
You will never change the minds of a Magnum hunter :chuckle: You place the bullet it the right spot any Cal. will work .. A lot of us like the .270 and that would be my 1st choice :twocents:
-
Shot mine with a 7 mm Mag. If I could do it again I would have done it with a bow. They are tough animals so when they are in the rut they could really get cranky.
-
Shot mine in its bed at 170 yds, through the lungs he stood up and I put one in his hump,,,, he dropped right back down in his bed....Good Night!
-
Oh yea forgot 7MM is what I used.
-
Biggest moose killed in our family was by my grandmother. Single shot from the .250-3000 at 100 yards. Dropped where he stood. 100 grain Norma Ammo from the 60's or early 70's. I'd guess that means it was a Sierra, but not sure.
Year later my grandfather took a small meat moose. Seven shots with the 30-06. Winchester 180 grain. Grandma gave him heck about that till the day he died :chuckle:
-
I vote for any of the above. I've been lucky enough to have taken 3 moose, one with a 50cal muzzleloader, one with a 416 Weatherby and 7mm SAU. All bulls died just fine when hit in the proper spot.
-
I agree with the above. I shot the bottom 1/3 of the heart. It was just mush. But it went down and than stood up and walked 3 - 4 steps. Very tough animals.
-
I'm using my trusty 270 this year.
Never let me down yet
-
I shot mine with my 300 Weatherby through the lungs he still ran 100 yards. Still can see the water spray of his back when hit , what a memory. Use enough gun that's what I say. Mine was taken above the arctic circle. Good luck and enjoy. Jaques
-
I shot a 6-year old Shiras bull behind the shoulders with a 150gr from my .30/06; he swapped ends and I did the same for the opposite side - he fell about 4 steps past the 2nd shot. Neither one exited, recovered each one under the hide on the opposing side, big beautiful .60 cal mushrooms.

I'd hunt with a moose permit.....
-
Could loan you my Ruger safari mag in 375 H&H. A 270gr Barnes TS should get it done.
-
We usually recommend a 270 or larger but we've seen them killed just as dead with .25 caliber rifles.
-
I killed mine with my .300 win mag, dropped right where he was standing. About 80 yards away Behind the shoulder or in the hump, I can't remember.
-
I'll be using my .338 win mag with 225g Accubonds. I wouldn't hesitate to use a 30-06 or 7mm rem either.
-
Have a few frinds go with u. They can be "cougar hunting or coyote hunting". U will be hunting for ur moose with a bow in ur hand, one friend with a muzz, one with the 338, one with the 30 06 ect...lol. I dont c anything illegal or unethical about that do u?. Just make sure they have cougar tags.
-
Another .338 Win Mag fan here...shot two of the big critters and job well done.
250 gr Barnes
225 gr hornady
both did a great job......30/06 and bigger your good to go.... :twocents:
-
Just have a few friends go with u and have them be cougar or coyote hunting with differnt weapons with in arms reach of u...lol.

They don't seem to be that hard to kill
-
I shot mine with a 270. The thing many hunters do wrong is think they need to shoot again if he is still standing.
You shoot and wait 15 minutes. He stood there looking around then continued browsing. About 15 minutes later, he fell over.
-

:yike: No way could I wait 15 minutes. I might give it 15 seconds to fall over. Maybe that's what you meant?
-
:dunno: I killed one with a .308 last year, seemed to work OK..

Exactly ! Thats why I don't use a .270 ! Imagine how far in the bush he could run in those 15 minutes. It took me 3 hours to find one that had gone 60 yards after being hit with a perfect shot from a 338-378 and a backup from a .338 win mag. The first time you shoot one that doesn't drop with a .270 you will NEVER use one again. But until that happens it "Will kill anything".
-
I am very confident that a good shot in vitals with my 270 using 140 grain trophy bonded bullets will pretty much drop a big moose pretty quickly. I know because that was that case in 2012 when I killed one off the raft in the brooks range with one decent shot. IMO a bull elk is a lot tougher to kill then a bull moose.
-
85gr. Thunderhead on top of a Beman ICS Hunter arrow.
-
I used a .358 win in Browning BLR lever action.
-
I don't know if its because of their long gangley legs or what, but every moose that I or my family members have shot just fall right over. We've killed em with 30-06 to .300 Win Mag. I personally would use a muzzleloader or a bow when I draw next year.

Beautiful rifle what are the ballistics of that round / your loads?
-
Yes, Bobcat 15 minutes. The actual time was about 5 minutes.
When I drew my tag, I researched moose hunting and the videos I saw moose were shot with magnums at 300+ yards. The hunters waited and the moose fell over after about 10-15 minutes. The announcer said this was normal and not to run after the moose, but instead wait.
It worked for me with a 270. I aimed for the lungs, since I did not want to damage the heart or liver. But to each his own.

Does anyone remember the pending world record moose that was killed in canada last year or the year before ? I just remember reading a small article on it . But i do remember the guy was a local meat hunter and he used an good ol Canadian favorite .303 british . I personally would go with the .338 :twocents:
