I am so excited I finally drew a OIL tag! Its hard for me to even find the words to express how I feel right now! Now it's time for me to plan the trip! Have any of you out there hunted this tag or know someone that has?
-
Congrats on the tag but are you sure it's a OIL? All I know about that unit is that some of the best area is private and the landowner charges a fairly high fee for access. But there's also enough public land that you can get your sheep without having to pay for the private access.
Good luck. I'm sure you'll get plenty of help. Let me know if you want to contact the biologist for that area. I have a phone number and email address, he was very helpful last year with my sheep hunt.
-
Its an oil for Ewe but you can still pull a ram in the future i believe.
Congrats

congrats

Are these what you're looking for?(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimages.tapatalk-cdn.com%2F15%2F06%2F12%2Fdb721fddf5aaddcc7fd101c0a2d1cd1d.jpg&hash=28cbb1a341ed7110fb5b96c1f356b6ef98514b29)

Either the date or the temp is off on that camera. I hope
-
Yes date was off lol was july
-
Thank you for the info bobcat yeah if you have his info I would gladly take it! I was planning on contacting the biologist next week. Yeah I also can't wait to draw ram hunt someday and get a ram like you got last year. With 17 points next year I hope to draw one of these years!
-
That's a cool picture can't wait! Looking forward to cooking up some of that sheep meat never had it and from what I understand it's really good.
-
Do not pay to hunt the Eaton ranch. You can hunt that water tank and I saw them everyday I Hiked in.
-
Should be a fairly easy tag. They are usually pretty close to tge hiway below the dam. Just make sure you get out of the truck to shoot :hello:

I'm waiting for the exact same tag in my mailbox very soon.
Now what weapon to use....... hmmm

I know right! Should be a lot of fun seeing the Sheep in the rut.

Do not believe ewe permits are OIL, might want to check on that ;)
-
Congrats on the draw!
-
Hey Cnelk, my neighbor drew that tag last year and took a nice ewe. If you still need info, let me know and he said I could pass on his name and number.
-
Made my first scouting trip. Seen a bunch of sheep and got some good pictures!

I know it will be hard for you all to see but there was a really nice ram in that group! He had great mass from the base to the tips and his horns came down past his jaw line and back up. I'm not the best judge on rams but I'm sure he would be a good ram for the unit.?
-
Less than a week to go and I will be chasing sheep! I really hope the rut activity well be in full swing! I'm looking forward to the most is watching rams chasing ewes around and hopefully watch a few ram butting heads.

Lots of chasing been going on in the Swakane for a week or two now. Have Fun
-
Should be rutting hard on your hunt. Lots of Rams you won't usually see will be coming out. I really miss driving the canyon everyday. Have a great trip!
-
Was in there yesterday evening saw rams running around in places I don't normally see sheep. They were everywhere on the selah butte side, on legal land!
-
Ewe down!... got her opening morning! It sure was a fun time to spend with my dad and long time family friend! I can't thank them enough for taking the time off work to join me on this hunt. I sure feel blessed to even have had the opportunity to harvest such an amazing animal. If you have never seen sheep in the rut it sure is fun to watch, with or without a tag in pocket! The ewe I shot had 6 rams chasing her around and it was also a goal of mine to try to find a dry ewe without a lamb, which she was. Now the wait is on to get her back from my taxidermist and I plan on getting a pedestal mount of her and will have a empty spot next to her where someday hope to fill it with a giant ram!

I have always dreamed of eating sheep backstrap so I planned on barbecuing it in camp once I got one. I have to say it is amazing! Very mild and delicious!
(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimages.tapatalk-cdn.com%2F15%2F11%2F05%2Fd06eb01e7b3d3ca4e29a41e99e15ad0d.jpg&hash=2892e58d37bbf49a4d1cac5da8287512a3a89f9a)
I stuffed it with sauteed onion, garlic and blue cheese crumbles with a lite salt and pepper.
(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimages.tapatalk-cdn.com%2F15%2F11%2F05%2Fdcbdf5b55d9f8544abbdaada6687280b.jpg&hash=2042cbf63d20c65061ab0443a3eb39d81b8645da)
Then finished it with a bacon wrap!
(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimages.tapatalk-cdn.com%2F15%2F11%2F05%2F2d910f9001fc7a4d9bec2c392a12cf64.jpg&hash=1e8a501daa9de09b6cdb40024f54bbf47ef08da9)
The sides were fresh green beans cooked with bacon pieces and onion and red garlic mashed potatoes

Correct me if I'm wrong but Selah Butte really isn't known for trophy quality rams but with that being said we seen a ton of young rams a few nice ones with a lot of potential! Here is a picture of one and would it be a shooter?

Congrats on a great Ewe! Sounds like you had a great hunt and the backstraps look amazing. I'd call that ram a shooter for sure, but I haven't seen many yet.
-
Very cool! Looks Delicious!!
-
Well done and extremely nice story and pics. Thanks for sharing. I was there today but didn't pull the trigger on my ewe tag yet but I could have. Trying to get one with my 1974 sharps rifle with paper patch ammo before switching to a scoped gun but I have plenty of time left.
-
Great times for sure, congratulations

Thank you and good luck to you! There are tons of ewes to choose from that is for sure! I had a blast! Post pictures if you can after you get your ewe.

We've got a ram tag for here, hopefully headed over there soon! Headed back from colorado now, was that nice ram on public land?
-
He was really close to it about two to three hundred yards to the BLM land but he was still on the ranch. If I had the ram tag I would pay the trust pass fee to hunt the private late to. But you shouldn't have any problem finding a ram on the BLM land seen a bunch of decent rams and a few nice shooters. Good luck!

Did you notice Eaton has a lot of land posted no trespassing that is actually blm land?
-
Ok thanks! Great job on the ewe!! Ya I think I'd tell him to shoot that last one! That's a dandy! How long will these things be rutting? Should we be in a hurry to get over there?
-
Yeah it is a must to have a GPS with a chip and a map for sure. I do understand why he would post a sign there because he does have land behind most of the BLM land and he doesn't what people on his land. With that being said I talked to people that said they have had issues with people that work for Reds fly shop trying to kick them off BLM land and claiming that it is private property which I do not agree with.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G900A using Tapatalk
-
I talked to the biologists and from what I saw the rut is going full swing right now. But I'm not to sure how long it lasts?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G900A using Tapatalk
-
If that's the case he should be posting the birder between his land and the blm. Its illegal to post public land as private, plain and simple.
-
I know I was really confused the first time I went over there. With all the private signs in front of the BLM land and not all but some of the BLM land was marked with public land access and right next to those signs were Eaton ranch signs.

Thanks. I have to take the above statement back. As I was going through photos, I found this one, didn't even notice when I was taking it. :chuckle:

Congrats on your ewe! Great idea on the mount, hope you can get that ram to put next to her!
-
Maybe you should get her "mounted" in the above position, might make for a great action diorama? :chuckle:
