Title: official high hunt results thread!
Post by: wrangler on September 17, 2007, 05:47:40 PM: well, the results of my hunt included a lot of pictures, a lot of people, sore legs and no deer. weather turned ugly so we hiked the 8 miles out this morning empty handed. didn't see much deer, one small 3 point that i wouldnt have packed out if someone paid me and 2 does. did however see more people than i ever thought possible in an area that i expected to recive rather light preasure, dissapointing to say the least. i only know of one buck (a small 4 point) being shot in that area in 3 days. heard only a few shots for 30+ hunters. lots of unhappy camps up there. anyways, might give it a try next weekend, we'll see. hope everyone else had better luck!

We had the whole area to ourselves The only people we saw wereon the hike out and not inside the wilderness boundary. We also saw no bucks. Does only. PS: someone made the trail steeper again this year. That pisses me off. :chuckle:

I swear to god someone better have a word with the forest service, because they seem to be doing that everywhere I hunt as well. :dunno: Danged if I didn't think I was just getting older, but if the trails are steeper in other places too, they're doing it to all of us. >:( I think it's a conspiracy to keep us meat eaters out the woods and it's being perpetrated by the antihunters/granola munchers if you ask me. :chuckle: :chuckle:

Sounds like you had fun and at least saw some good scenery.

I got my butt handed to me. ;)

We went in wanting to back door an area but with large blow downs and the fact it never opened up
really hurt our chances of scoring. Didn't see a thing. It was hot and I think that had to do something with it.

I need to go back to a closer area and am looking at Alpine Lakes area. My hunting pards are working and not able to go. I'm looking at just a couple of days.

Anyone game to go to a new area? PM me..

I think the forest service has infiltrated ours schools because both my sons laughed when I was trying to let them in on the evil's of trail modification. :DOH: It's pretty scary. Post by: wrangler on September 18, 2007, 07:29:58 PM: dang.... sounds like a bust this year. now i don't feel so bad! well, at least my mind don't feel so bad, the legs are another story. i'll second that the heat was terrible. oh, and whatsup with all the hippie eco freaks wandering the woods during hunting season? i didn't think they'd stray much greenlake this time of year, except for the occasional trip up to capitol hill or maybe a local greenpeace protest or 2. they were none to happy to us 'heavily armed' as one guy, (or maybe a gal i couldn't tell) put it. apperently yelling "hey bear" every few hundred feet and carrying 'bear spray' is more effective than a side arm, i dunno.... :dunno: either way here a couple pics from the trip.

Post by: Ridgerunner on September 19, 2007, 05:40:58 AM: Not too much to add to this post. Saw 2 legal bucks and two bears, probably 15 does. First day was WAY TOO HOT, second and third days were pretty much fogged in and wet. Not the best year by far for me........

Just because you got off farily easy this year, don't take your next trip up there lightly. Things can get nasty in a hurry up there. Good job......Thanks for the pics.

Post by: OltHunter on September 20, 2007, 01:00:05 PM: thanks for all the comments, and believe me, i know deer hunting is not as easy as this way, especially in the high hunts. just hope my buddy doesn't expect deer hunting to be like it was. i took me about my first 5 seasons before i even saw a legal buck. just the fact it didn't take us long in a new area i've never hunted, just heard about, just adds to how special this hunt was.

Post by: Ray on September 20, 2007, 04:50:10 PM: I spent the last few days in GMU 249 Alpine Lakes. I was the only hunter there in the area where I was at. The hike in was about 4300 feet elevation gain over a pass and approximately five miles. The areas I was hunting were within 2 miles from camp.

The first morning in about 15 minutes from camp I ran across about 8-9 grouse warming themselves after sunbreak. 25 minutes or so after that I spotted a couple of does in a drainage below me 100 yards making their way uphill. I moved out of their way... Then later that day I found some deer beds with another doe laying down sunning herself. All the deer I saw were between 5500-6300 feet elevation just below the scrub pines and favored slopes which faced south and east so that they could enjoy the morning warmth.

The next day I spotted the only buck I would get eyes on during my trip. He was meaty. I spotted him close to where I came across the 2 does the day before. It was a good glassing spot.. He was making his way down into the benches below the scrub pines. I could not tell how many points he had from my vantage and the foliage which somewhat distracted my view from about 500 yards.. So when he wasn't looking I snuck a lot closer (to about 100 yards) and saw that he only had 2 points on each side. Anyway it was great to get some practice but would rather have seen a legal one and filled my freezer. I left my camera in the truck the whole time so no pics.

Lots of rain and cold weather but I still covered some turf. I would like to have stayed another day or two but after only seeing half a dozen deer in a few days I decided I would rather come home and see my baby girl and eat krispy kremes.

Hiked up Taylor River and Quartz Creek Trails and surrounding area, saw only 2 does and a fawn. All the "Locals" said ya wont see um under 4000 ft. for three more weeks. Horse back is the only way to go.

Excellent job.

Sorry about those steep trails guys. It mostly has to do with global warming and the extinction of the polarbear.

Post by: addicted on October 03, 2007, 09:46:41 AM: me and my buddy spent a weekend hiking around the glacier mountain wilderness area and the henry M. jackson wilderness area. didnt see any deer or hunters but we saw some really cool scenery and some good spots to try again during regular season. ill try to get the pics up
