I probably shouldn't say this, but I drew and harvested goats in 72, 84, and 96 (the first year of the point system and two years before they went OIL).  I'm still in the running for my OIL goat with 19 points, so hopefully I'll draw my 4th WA goat tag before I can't make it up the mountain again!  I know...I probably just painted a bullseye on my back!!   :)

not a hard hunt. It is a fun hunt and you will see lots of moose right off the road. Get a hold of me if you need a hand. I love three minutes from where you will be hunting. Good luck

Congrats to all the OIL tag winners. There should be lots of good stories and pics to come. I was lucky enough to draw a cow elk tag and a second deer tag also. I'm going to start a thread soon to document this season. It's my goal to get a bear, deer, elk and moose in one season. Bear will be first up in a little over 2 weeks. I'm supper excited about this hunting season! 2015 is going to be my best hunting season so far.

Title: Re: OIL Tags 2015

It's a little stressful to have drawn the damn thing!! I'm trying to adopt the attitude that I'm just gonna scout and hunt my ass off and be happy... Even if I only kill a little 185 ram.... Hehehe

Seriously though... It's hard to grasp the true opportunity. Last year the MT auction tag was filled in this unit and the tag was bought for $450,000.

I'll start a thread as soon as I get up there and start scouting!
Title: Re: OIL Tags 2015
Post by: Hornseeker on July 16, 2015, 06:33:02 AM
And the 185 part was said tongue in cheek!! I'd be happy as a lark with a 180 with my longbow! Rifle, that's a different story! The only time I'll limit myself to bow is the first ten days, when the tag is archery only.

Skagit quality that's a weird area for a quality tag.  :dunno:

Title: Re: OIL Tags 2015
Post by: lonedave on October 05, 2015, 12:02:33 AM
Yeah, not really quality in terms of antlers, but I used to love hunting up there with my cousins around Ross Lake during the late hunts they used to have.  I did kill a big 5x7 blacktail up near the Ross Lake powerline above Buster Brown Flat in 85, but mostly it was just fun hunting and with snow it was actually even better.  Tom used to let us hunt out of the Ross Lake resort with him after they were closed for the season.  The unfortunate thing is I drew the Late Palouse whitetail tag too and it's probably the better tag.  I always look at quality as fewer hunters, better hunt timing, and good numbers of deer/bucks.  The Palouse tag has all that and it's much closer to home.  I got lucky and killed my moose on Oct 1st, so I'll probably be going deer hunting in November after all.

My father and I just pulled a Maine moose tag!!!! :yike: :IBCOOL:   I'm the sub-permittee, but I'm still stoked!

Miles,

Being a sub-permittee in Maine is awesome. You're there for the hunt, and you get to carry a rifle (or bow, or shotgun, etc.), and either the primary or the sub may shoot the moose. Most primary permittees are fine with their sub-permittee making sure the moose doesn't get away, so they can take the meat home! You only get so many chances. There's nothing quite like that full truck bed with the legs sticking up four feet above the sides! You think you know how big a moose is, you think you know what you're hunting, until you see this massive animal on the ground in front of you.  Make sure you have (plenty of) friends on speed-dial, ready to come help you get him out of there. Things to bring along that you wouldn't consciously expect to bring are a chainsaw and/or an axe, both nice and sharp, because the rib cage is made of bones and cartilage as big or bigger than what holds your arms or legs together! At a thousand to twelve hundred pounds for a decent male (the average I see is 900 to 1100), he's 5 to 6 times bigger than you.

Oh, how I envy you! I applied for twenty-five years, and never got one. My friend Bruce was picked three or four times during that same twenty-five years. So how do I know how cool these hunts are? You guessed it - I was one of the guys on speed dial who showed up for the grunt work of getting the bull out of the puckah-brush!  I actually went along, but didn't carry a weapon. They like swampy areas, so odds are good you be dealing with some wet areas where he goes down, or you'll struggle through some water and muck getting him back to the truck.

Have a ball!

Dead eye,

Thanks for the post.  The post of mine that you quoted was from last year.  I went on the hunt with dad and had a blast.  The pictures are all on the Maine moose thread you also commented on.  We were successful in getting a respectable bull.

This year I was lucky enough to draw a bull tag, and now my dad is the sub permittee.  Hopefully we can have a repeat of last year and get a nice one.  I just continued on with the same thread for this years hunt.
