Title: Idaho unit 27-1 bighorn
Post by: TommyH on June 13, 2015, 05:20:43 PM
Ok, a good Buddie of mine moved to idaho awhile back and just recently got ahold of me and told me he drew this 27-1 bighorn sheep tag. I have started to read up on this unit and trying to gather some info. He was extreamly excited when he told me the news he had drawn a tag!! The little bit I have read on this unit didn't  sound like it was going to be an easy hunt. :chuckle: I will be trying to help him fill his tag on this hunt/hunts.  Any info anyone has on this unit we would greatly appreciate. It's a big area and and we have lots to learn.  PM me if you want to . Thanks and good luck everyone!

No experience with this hunt, I don't even apply for it but from what I have heard be prepared for the 2nd toughest sheep hunt in the lower 48 right behind Montana's unlimited hunts.

1 other thing a buddy of mine had the hunt a few years back before I knew him, they did a 12 day float hunt and saw 1 sheep hunting from the river up, I guess 1 kid had filled a tag 12 miles in from the river that year. If you guys decide to float I know you have to secure trip permits in advance, but I believe you get an exemption to the lottery system you normally have to go through to float the middle fork

Be prepared to climb 2-4k feet in elevation from the river straight up! with packs.

If your coming from the river you may want to just have a jet boat drop you off and pick you up at a predetermined spot. It will cost you $1000-1500 but you can have a decent size base camp and you don't have to worry about floating, moving camp, etc.

U need to have a jet boat and be mobile in this unit thats why many raft. You simply cannot just hike up wherever you want and hike down wherever you want. Guys get cliffed out all the time in this country and you have to be prepared to stay an extra day to get where your headed.

The rafting permits aren't required that late in the year, not many people are on the river that late. There are a couple of outfitters that may or may not help with info, One at Loon and one at Pistol creek. There is a reason that 27 is the easiest sheep tag to drew in the lower 48. Get a call into the air services in the area also.

There is a nice hot spring at Loon creek to soak your feet in.

Mr. Frank Church can teach you everything you need to know about sheep hunting.

Use G & S Aviation out of Cascade into either Indian Creek or Thomas Creek, hike the 3 miles to Marble Creek (its halfway between the two airstrips) then hike up to the old Mitchell Ranch (just a two acre flat now) about 2 miles up the creek, and hunt up Spring Creek to the top of Pongo (some maps show it as Pungo) Mountain...there is a good spring right at the top of the mountain where the sheep hang out...

For more info, check out Middle Fork Outfitters, based out of the famed Middle Fork Lodge.

Good luck,
