Well, this is the start of a long journey that I'm sure will go much too quickly. I just received approval from my employer for a month long vacation. I will have November (all of it) to fulfill my moose hunt (deer and elk will be open too) so this feels like it is starting to set in. A once in a lifetime Washington moose hunt. I only had 13 points so I do feel bad for those with more but be sure, I am damn happy I was lucky enough to draw. I've started gathering my trail cams together but I am sure I will buy a couple more.
I am lucky enough to draw my 1st choice, Aladdin. I've had property there for over 20 years along with a cabin that has been used for camp during late deer and elk for many, many years. I know the area very well and have seen many moose. I hope my luck will hang around until after the season. Being able to hunt from my cabin...a place I've called home during hunting seasons is beyond any expectations I had. My father help build that cabin many years ago. I wish he was still here for this.
I'll post more later with results from trail cams. Hopefully at the end of this thread there will be a big ole moose in the pictures.

One month.
One moose tag.
One thread to rule them all.....
-
I hope you have an awesome hunt. Let the fun begin...
-
Can't wait to see this go down. Best of luck to you.
-
Good luck. Get a big one 👍
-
Keep us unlucky ones posted. We are living thru you with this thread.
-
That will be great hunting from your cabin! I get to pretty much learn a new area since the sheep weren't even there the last time I was.
-
If there is anyone that may have experience with moose hunting during the late season Please chime in on late calling.

In November I would start looking more towards wintering areas.

With a month off, you will the hunt of your life.
Can't wait to get the hunt report and field picks.
Enjoy every minute of your time.👊🏻

Congratulations on drawing the tag you wanted. I hope your hunt truly is a hunt of a lifetime. Good luck. Jim

Good luck and have fun! Congrats!!!!!!

Congrats on your tag, I got the early Aladdin A tag. Don't feel bad about getting drawn with your point total, I only had 8 and I don't feel bad. I see you live in Arlington when not at your cabin. I live there too on Jim Creek Rd. If you want to get together to talk all things moose let me know.
-
I doubt it will take you a month to get a good bull in that unit, that's a good tag. Good luck.

Thanks everyone. I picked up 4 more trail cams today. I hope to make it over July 4th weekend to get all in place. I'll check them when I go back up in September and reset. I believe a new 45-70 may be in order now. :chuckle:
-
Man, this sounds like it will be an epic hunt. Hope you kill a dandy!!
45/70 is a super cool round it is like throwing a bowling ball at them. I love my Marlin XLR 45/70 and it is a 300 yard gun all day long.

Glad you were drawn, good luck

I'll get a hold of you towards the opener. I will have checked cams by then.

Congrats on the moose tag!
45-70 for sure! What rifle you going to get?
I put in for the late Alladin with 16pts with a "not selected" result but I'm can't complain cuz I drew a WY moose tag this year. Going to take my 1874 Sharps in 44-77 with paper patch loads for that one.
Look forward to your scouting and ultimate trip report.

45/70 rifles are pretty cool. I had a marlin lever action that i killed a couple elk with. It left me wanting more... so i got a bolt gun in 375 h&h. Much happier with it. All in what you want. A 45/70 will no doubt freight train a bull moose! good luck! I cant wait to read everyones moose posts!
-
Quick update. I just purchased a 2007 Marlin lever 45-70 22" barrel rifle. Perfect condition, never had a scope mounted to it. Just what I was looking for. My buddy is going to do up some loads for me (he has a ruger #1). Plenty of time to sight it up and get comfortable with it. I'll post some pics later.
Finally got to buy a gun I've always wanted and have a good reason.
WOOHOO, I'm going on a moose hunt!
-
Nice. I have one in 450 Marlin & ported too.
-
Congrats to you on your upcoming hunt. My wife drew the early Douglas tag. we're not familiar with the unit yet. If you have any scouting tips your willing to part with, we would be delighted to hear from you.
-
Sounds like a nice gun for your hunt!
-
 a case full of imr4198 and Hornady hollow point (can't remember if it was 300 or 350 grain) were money in mine! I had a straight 6 power scope. I'll try and dig out a recovered pill and post a pic. Have fun with it!
-
Here it is. Went lengthwise through an elk at around 90-100 yards.
-
Hunt of a lifetime no matter what! A month of hunting in your backyard is a dream.
-
Sounds like your in for a tremendous season. My wife drew the Douglas early tag this year. It sounds like you spend some time in that region. Do you have any slam dunk scouting tips that you would be willing to part with in GMU 108. Any help would be great. Thanks!

Nice
I have a guide gun in 45-70. The gun loves my 460gr gas check hard cast huge flat point with xmp5744 for one big hole groups at 50 yards with XS Ghost ring peep sight. Drops like a rock though. Not for longer ranges.

That's exactly why I went with a 22" barrel. I'm hoping it will give me another 30 or 40 yards before the big drop off starts. (I know it will give me at least 3 1/2" :chuckle: ) I love the caliber and now I get to hunt with it. Most of my deer and elk hunts have been with a scope, although my deer shots have been 40 yards or less. Being able to hunt the largest of the big game we have with a big lever action with iron sights....that's the stuff my hunting dreams are made of.
I think this hunt means so much to me (not just because it's unbelieveable) because of the massive heart attack I had 8 months ago during hunting season as many of you know. I was so lucky...amazingly lucky I am still here. So many positive things have happened since then...or maybe I just notice that a little more. I do wish my dad was still around for this. My daughter will be off somewhere doing Army medic work or she would be there (she's awesome). My hunting buds will be there to help though.
Truly feels like "Once in a Lifetime". Trail cams will be set in September for moose.

Received the tag and permit today. :IBCOOL: So that's what a moose tag looks like. I've never seen one before. I've heard about them but after 13 years......just thought moose tags were a myth. :chuckle: I feel for you guys with more points. The way I see it, You can only not draw if you don't put in......from there, it's all a crapshoot.
I'll be heading up where I spend some time elk hunting, at the high areas. I see good moose up there in November. Probably why I don't see elk :chuckle: There are some open areas but it is awfully think too. I'll set trailcams labor day and won't be back in till it's time to hunt elk. That is a little stressful but it's the good kind. I'm saving vacation time to max opportunity. I now have a tag, I have a new Marlin 45-70, I know the area well, I know there are moose and I have 30 days for once in a lifetime. I'm not to proud to ask for a little luck as well. :chuckle: Deer and elk will be open that month as well. This otta be good.
Falcon, feel free to swing by the cabin if your up in the area in November.
-
Checked cams. 5 bull moose but nothing too big. Nice 7x7 elk. Be back there in 15 days. Pics coming.
-
Nice! Heck of an elk there too.
-
Tagging along.

You need to kill that Elk as well..
