I drew rifle oct 15-31st! Cant wait for october :IBCOOL:
-
Congrats

Thanks I'll have to figure out how to navigate the private property in the unit. Anyone have any experience in 45? There is tons of public land but most access is through private for $$$... Any advice on the unit is greatly appreciated!

im surprised they can charge you money to access public land? What about easements?
-
Sounds like it's a "trespass fee"? Looks like a lot of the property ownership extends to the middle of the roadways. There is bound to be a good access point or two into the Bennett hills. i
-
No need to pay an access fee. There is plenty of public ground to hunt and it all holds good deer. You will have a blast - be sure to hunt the last week of the season.
I will be down there as well ;)
-
Good to hear JJ. I haven't laid eyes on very many big mulies so I plan on looking at lots of bucks before I take a shot. Have you hunted 45 before?

I think if you do a search on that unit you will find JJ knows a little bit about that area. :chuckle:

I've been a couple times. It's a ton of fun - enjoy every second of it. At times during the hunt, it's sometimes easy to start taking where you are and what you are doing for granted. Don't - literally enjoy every second as it is a rare opportunity.
-
Game on in idaho! 45 is one of the best!
-
I will be there from the 24th until the end burning boot leather and trying to wear out my Swaros! I will absolutely soak it all in... Taking an animal is a bonus to me it's all about the hunt and the country I'm in. Ive never seen a monster mule buck it's going to be hard for me to pass on an average buck there
-
That being said I am going with the intentions of 180" deer. Anyone have a good resource for field judging muleys?
-
They've got some big 'ole bodied deer down there. They get bigger on the ground. I learned that lesson the hard way. :chuckle:
Although I did see a couple 30"+ deer on my last hunt, most of the good scoring bucks are 24"-26" but look narrower because they are so tall.
-
Good I could use a freezer of venison steaks. Did you draw again this year?
-
No tag for me. I'm just a lowly camp cook this year.
-
"Camp cook" is an awfully polite way to put it. :chuckle:
Good luck on your hunt. You're one lucky guy!
-
Beautiful area and fun hunt but you better prepare for walking on nothing but uneven lava rock, its brutal on your feet even with quality boots, assuming you hike very far.
If you are looking for a high scoring buck you better be prepared to pass bucks like this one. ;)
Congrats, good luck.
-
That buck would be dead if it were my tag :chuckle:
-
I will be putting the miles on for sure. Ground like that can make 2 miles feel like ten real fast that's good to know. That's a great looking buck to me I've got some studying to do on mule bucks so I don't end up with a small one. Is spiking out a good option in this unit?
-
Look up Steve Alderman.

Look up Steve Alderman.
Better have a deep wallet if you do that, and don't tell him you chatted with JJ. :chuckle:

There are lots of places you could spike. 2 miles will feel worse than that. ;)

Is that the same guy from mule deer country? Not that I'm interested but does he outfit in there now or what does he charge for?

Yes, and unless he has changed, he charges for any info he gives out. You can send him a email if you want, creeksideproductions@mac.com but I will tell you he starts at $1000 for five days of pre season scouting and goes up from there. Since he hunts it himself I'd seriously doubt that includes the specific areas he hunts himself.
-
Gotcha thanks. I don't want all that I just need to find access points to the good country. I have the Idaho chip for my GPS from previous hunt showing private land, I'm going to build a mytopo or two this week. Any other maps you guys would recommend? I'm going to make a quick scouting trip in August to see the unit but I will have the wife and kids along so it will be mostly finding access roads and a spot for my base camp and take off point for spiking out. I'm thinking to focus on Bennett mtn but I don't want to overlook the lower stuff... Am I on the right track?

I wouldn't pay him either. ;)
-
Neither would I. :chuckle:

big, open country, wintering ground, pray for early snow.
Send me a pm if you need more information.

Hunted Unit 44 last fall. A lot of those deer migrate to Unit 45 by the end of October and some of them are very big. We saw a 180-190 typical three days before the end of the season but couldn't get on him. Knew of some bucks shot that were even bigger. My advice if you hunt hard...hold out for 180+.
-
Advice taken. I've been looking at tons of pics and info on field judging mulies trying to get a feel for it. Bottom line I think is look at lots of bucks before I try for one. I have a feeling if I see a worthy buck I will know it! Looking forward to get in those hills
-
I'm headed over on Thursday to check out the area. I have some good starting points, good maps, and an idea of some spots to look at. gonna try to find some good resident bucks as well.

Find those spots in the pics I posted and you will see critters in October, good luck to ya.

Thanks I will give it a shot
-
Well I saw a lot of country and figured some stuff out. There are a few areas that I didn't get to check out. I saw a handful of deer but nothing to speak of as far as trophy quality for this unit. I'm assuming/ hoping that will change come October. We saw elk, antelope, moose, and a badger. I have a gameplan for my first 3 or 4 days. All in all it was a good trip...wish I had a few more days to scout. If anyone has any info on the area north of Bliss they wouldn't mind sharing shoot me a pm. Thanks in advance!

Oh I would love to have that tag!!!!!!

Waiting to,hear how this one turns out.
-
Update?
-
:yeah: Is his season over?
-
Over on the 31st. Low deer numbers this year.
Buddy killed a good buck, but not the kind of deer that he pulled out in the past.
-
Nothing seems to be moving over there this week. Could be a tough hunt.
-
It was a tough hunt for sure. Very few big bucks spotted but could have shot a 160-170 class buck everyday. I passed on a stud the first day I was there, I was in my truck headed to a spot and he and his does were 200yds off the road... Kinda made me think big bucks were going to be common up in the mountains... Not the case. I was solo on this trip it was hard to hold out and not shoot a decent buck and head home, but hunted my a$$ off for 6 days and finally found another bruiser. Thanks to those who helped out
-
Did you get a buck?
-
Is there a picture of the bruiser you found??
