Title: My dog is very sick! ( No longer!)
Post by: trophyhunt on June 27, 2015, 01:55:30 PM
My 9 year old lab started acting lethargic and very tired yesterday.  We thought it was just the heat, he wouldn't eat or drink water. Then he started pooping pure watered down blood, the first episode looked like an OJ simpson scene.  Off to the Puyallup pet emergency hospital, 500.00 for blood work and xrays. Blood was good, no high numbers anywhere, the xray showed everything was normal????  So, they wanted 1,900.00 American dollars to keep him over night with a iv drip, 1,900.00! That is when we left with our dog, I have praised these guys in the past, I have nothing good to say about them right now.  That seems a bit on the high side, feels like  they are taking advantage of our love for the dog.  Anyway, we have him at home, he barely drinks water but is a little and has had 1 bite of a piece of meat in two days.  We have him in our house with the AC keeping him cool, but it's a constant vigil to make sure no more OJ scenes happen.  He has only puked twice but not since yesterday.  I sure hope it pulls through this, we lost him mom a year and half ago.

Did you have him wormed recently?
Sounds very similar to a situation I dealt with last year with my GSP.

That's a tough situation. I hope your pal pulls through. Canned food might be easier to digest for his screwed up stomach. At least to provide him with the nutrition to battle this, won't help much for the messes though.

Couldn't be anything picked up from you petting my pup yesterday? She has been free of worms since thursday afternoon as far as I could tell... Hope he gets better soon!

Try cottage cheese and eggs mixed together.  Easy on the stomach.  Hope he pulls through.

My old spring (RIP) has similar issues at times.  Boil up some white rice and mix it with some meat broth.  Go a little heavy on the broth at first.  When his appetite returns slowly mix in kibble.  I use to know when he was feeling better when there was a pile of rice kernels next his bowl and all the kibble was gone.  You can also try some baby food.  I had another spring that was rescued and then given to me.  She was in bad shape and most of her digestive system had shut down.  She was at the vet and between us we could not get her to eat anything.  By happenstance one of the technicians found a partial bottle of Gerber Turkey baby food.   That did the trick.  A week of that while slowly adding some kibble and she was soon a knot head springer again.

Well , I had a family get together tonight and when I got home he came out to see me. Still not hungry, and hank, no way was your puppy at all involved with this.  Our neighbors dog, his brother, is just fine. They spend all day together.

He's a bit better this morning, he ate half a cup of kibbles and drinking water.  And has started moving around a little bit, walked in the house by himself today. Baby steps, these dogs are tough and he looks a tiny bit better today for sure.  Thanks for all the info guys.

Did the vet check your dog for Giardia? Symptoms kind of point that way.

Take him to fountain veterinary clinic in Bellingham, the vet there is amazing. His prices are half the cost of other vets and he is also a hunter!.

I'm not sure if they checked for that or not? I know they said his blood came back fine, not sure if giardia shows up with blood test?  I will have to call the vet and ask. GSP, I will keep that vet in mind if he starts getting worse.  Thanks

Giardia doesn't show in blood work,it's a visual fecal matter microscope test.Giardia is the same thing humans get from drinking bad water it's known more commonly as "Beaver Fever". I'd be more inclined to think it's something the dog ate, if the dog is a mouser the best bet for a diagnosis is it ate a shrew, and shrews are poisonous to dogs, could explain the upset plumbing. Many years ago I had a springer that exhibited the same symptoms your first post had and it turned out to be a shrew poisoning, found part of a thrown up pointy nosed rodent in the yard.5 days later the dog was like new.

Thanks guys, he hasn't moved for hours with a bowl of mac n cheese in front of his nose.  Can't find where he is pooping to see if it's still blood or not.  I will be with him all day so I should be able to see him poop at some time.

When was the last booster shot for parvo given?
Title: Re: My dog is very sick!
Post by: trophyhunt on June 28, 2015, 02:09:42 PM
The vet said he was too old to get parvo, not sure if that's true or not.  He hasn't had a booster shot for parvo in years from what I can remember.

Have you given him any kind of dog food or treats made in China lately? I heard bad things about that stuff and thought most of it had been taken off the shelves. Could he have gotten into a salmon carcass and ingested some? There's also a type of algae bloom that can mess dogs up as well. Just brainstorming for ya.

There are a couple of paste type products on the market to help stimulate your dogs appetite.  They're loaded with extra vitamins and stuff to help him out, but honestly man, quit being such a cheap skate, and take your pal to the vet.  :twocents:

Just my opinion but if it where me I would be taking him back to the vet. If you wait to long it could be too late for the vet to do anything.

After the 500 dollar bill for the blood work and xrays, all they were going to do was hook him up to an IV and watch him, for 1,900 dollars.  I love the guy but I have limits when it comes to saving a 9 year old dog, I guess I could start a go fund me page, but then I'm sure there will be people who need the money more than me.  He did eat a couple spoon fulls of canned dog food about 20 minutes ago, after he walked out side and went pee.  As long as he doesn't get worse we are going to try to see if this passes. I do appreciate the advise

I think you need a new vet............... because the one you have  is questionable with that call, old dogs can get parvo just like young ones,it's an immune system attack, young dogs have weak immune systems and so do old dogs. The no booster for years, the lethargy, bloody poo and no eating all fit in line with parvo, and I'll give you one guess as to what happens with parvo, the dog get's an IV Drip. For a cheaters trick,go get a bottle or two of childrens unflavored pedialyte,it helps to rehydrate them and all the dogs I've ever used it on licked it up like it was candy.
The vet said he was too old to get parvo, not sure if that's true or not.  He hasn't had a booster shot for parvo in years from what I can remember.

Good info, thanks.  It doesn't seem to match up with him, parvo that is.  He hasn't puked since Friday and is eating very little.  His brother and him play together all the time and we have dogs from neighbors that come over a play all the time. No other dogs around us are sick, it says parvo is very contagious. He just went out and peed again and he peed a lot.

Prayers sent buddy. I know what your going through. Just lost my 12 year old Lab on Fri. :'(  He had the same symptoms and was having mini strokes when he over exerted himself. Just slept all day and stopped eating. Drinking a ton of water. His organs where failing which the vet said was causing neurological problems. He passed away in his sleep thankfully so I didn't have to put him down. I hope everything works out for you.

Rat poison?? it makes it so there blood doesnt clot. My dog got into it recently. they say vitamins are the only way to slow the symptoms.

They both got into something around the house.

Lots of remedies here but,  with no appetite and trouble keeping food down boiled chicken and white rice has always been what my vets says and that's white I do.  Might get him eating again.  Bland diet is the key.

Best of luck, wish these dogs could talk.

Does sound like rat poison.  Some people are pretty careless with the stuff.  Our lab got into some about 5 years ago.  Luckily we caught her in the act and dumped some hydrogen peroxide down her throat.  Got her to the vet & they gave her vitamin K.  Kept her overnight and it was only about $250 for the whole ordeal.

Hey Jerry, How is Rocky today??   Man I hope he is better  :'(  ... praying for you buddy
it seems he's doing better, I fed him and he ate an entire can of dog food without puking.  I haven't seen him puke since Saturday, still pretty tired and after eating he still pooped just brown colored water.  Still looks a little bloody but more of a brown color now.  The vet for the neighbors dog didn't even take blood or X-rays, he is just putting there dog on an IV and gave an antibiotic.  He says it's not parvovirus, our dog is doing good with staying hydrated and we had some left over antibiotics from his mom we gave him.  There is one serious virus that is suspected but the treatment is the same, fluids and time. He looks better, two more days and he should be much better or....

I'm really starting to think he just ate something like rotten meat or something that just really upset his stomach.  He is much better today, not completely back, I'd say he's 60% better.  I've never been so happy to see complete diarrhea tonight, NO MORE BLOOD COLOR!! Just pure poop looking diarrhea.  Yes!! Thanks for all the comments and concerns, I will let you know when he hits 100%   It's a good day!  Also want to add, the dogs are always pulling deer and elk bones and meat from the clear cut around our house, maybe they got some bad meat.

That's great news Trophy!  I know with my old lab, I swear she was a goner 2 or 3 times.  She went through some crazy stuff, uterine infection, trigeminal nueritis and finally a couple tumors mixed with old age got her.  Dogs are tough SOB's!!!

So sorry to hear this but happy things are looking up.  My 7 yo FCL is moving slower and sleeping more until it's walk or beach time.  then the "lab" comes back.  I worry about her but think it's just age and experience were she picks her spots now.

No offence intended, but why are your dogs aloud to roam free and get into only Lord knows what? As far as "rotton meat" never heard of a dog getting sick from it. My gut feeling is your dog was poisoned somehow.

They roam because we live a a private neighbor hood next to woods.  1.25 acre lots, dog friendly area.  9 years and everything has been just fine up to now.

that was one of the considerations, when he was a puppy we had to have his stomach emptied cause he got a hold of some.  I have decon pellets up high in the garage where he can't get to, I wonder if he ate a mouse that was infected with it? No more decon in our house, traps for now on.

What brand/flavor or food are you all using?  Sounds like it might be worth sharing, see if there is a common denominator involved..

He didn't have an answer for their dog either?  He just gave her some antibiotics and fluid the two days they took her in.  She was fine in just 2 days.  The vet never suspected parvo.
