Title: Brewster Sockeye Question
Post by: C-Money on June 28, 2015, 09:39:08 AM
So....From what I am reading in the new fishing regs, the Brewster pool will open July 1st. Is this a typo? Wells dam to 173 bridge opens July 16. I found it strange that from 173 bridge to Chief Joseph Dam opens earlier on July 1st.  Should be a few kings and sockeye in the pool on the 1st, if its true, I may give it a try!

Usually it gets really good the second to third week. I am guessing it should be awesome this year due to the warmer water in the Okanogan. As long as we don't have a huge rain that is👍🏻

Not a typo, same later opener for several years. You can only fish above the Brewster Bridgeport bridge until the 16th. Maybe they are trying to let some fish get up the Methow river or something. Last year I limited on sockeye July 10 and again on the 11th. I am planning to hit it for the opener this year because it appears to me the run is earlier for 2015.

The numbers look good. 2 weeks ago the paper said there has been more fish crossed Bonneville than the last huge year.

Just didn't feel right to go last year when so many folks were losing their homes in Brewster. Good chance my pink boat will be there in the next few weeks.   :chuckle:

do you need downriggers to fish this pool?  I would love to give it a try, but m 12 foot livingston doesn't have downriggers.

Not a typo as mentioned earlier. The reason it opens later is to protect the last of the springers heading up the Methow. With the big run they had up the Methow this year and how early it was, I find it ridiculous why that stretch  couldn't be opened on the 1st.  :twocents:

Riggers certainly make it easy but you don't, run the banana weight (3oz.) set up to a bead then swivel. Then run about six/seven foot of line to a dodger and around 12-15 inches of leader to your smile blade double hook set up. I usually catch the sockeye around 15-19 feet the first few hours of light.

I would love to try out this fishery.  Anyone know this fishery that wouldn't mind a tag along?  I have a good boat for the fishery as well and have lots of time off right now.

I think you should stay home this year too because there is a big fire at Wenatchee.

There is also a rough ramp for smaller boats in the Okanogan river above hwy 97. Depending on water level's that would be an option for smaller boats getting on the fishing that much faster. Downriggers are not necessarily needed, how you're rigging and what you're using makes the biggest difference. Can't wait!!!!!

I am chasing the Skagit Sockeye and the ones in Baker Lake this year.  It takes 3 Brewster sockeye to equal one of the Skagit Sockeye.   :chuckle:

Is it possible to catch them from the bank near brewster?

True, h2ofowlr. :chuckle:

Not much of a shore fishery. Immediately below wells produces a few for some.

Brewster is an early morning fishery, it will be hot fishing and weather. The bigger ones weigh 4 pounds at Brewster. Do they weigh up to 16 pounds? I doubt it seeing how the record is 10 pounds in WA.

There is a few sockeye in the pool, not sure if there is enough to make the trip this week. May wait a week. Banks is looking better and better for an out of town trip this week.

Many of the Sockeye we catch run 6-9lbs.

The ones I caught in the Brewster pool last year were about 1.5-2lbs it seemed.  Large Kokanee sized.

You're correct h2ofowlr. Many claim to catch 4 and 5 lb reds up here, but those people catch lots of 30 lb kings as well. I've never seen a 5 up here, and even a 4lber is nearly as rare as a 40 lb king. A solid 3.5 lb sockeye up here is a treat.  However, I've heard that the strain used in one of the new hatcheries just across the boarder had genetics of larger fish.  We shall see in the future.

We got them both days, we just fished the sockeye today and were done early. Only one guide was done before us. Columbia is 61 degrees! Okanogan is 80 so they will be there for a while. The fish checker said 35 keeper Chinooks out of 110 caught 2/3 wild (unmarked hatchery).

Its been a few years since we went up and fished Brewster, but i do remember we had fun and got really burnt. Is there a place to put up a tent for the night anywhere near the launch? I think we pulled into the school parking lot and put some foam pads in the boat and slept in that for the night. Not the way I want to do it this time.
Title: Re: Brewster Sockeye Question

There is a place right by the boat ramp that has tent space sometimes. It sounds like you already know about the other option. I have camped in the school parking lot several times. If you stay anyplace near the boat ranch you won't get much sleep.

Chinook did a disappearing act today probably to many boats.

We got one king each day we fished, the 2nd & 3rd. Both wild. The first king had both hooks in his face/mouth pretty good. I gently grabbed it by the tail with my right hand, and eased the upper hook out with the left. This made it thrash around, and in the process, drove the upper hook I just removed threw my middle finger. As bad as this hurt, it got worse. I lost my grip on its tail, and the king was more than ready to make a speedy get away! OH MY GOODNESS! That hurt!! I did my best to not panic, and was able to get a hold of its tail again. My friend, armed with needle nose pliers got the hook out of my finger, and then the second hook out of the king. After that, the fish released real well. My 9yo daughter may end up being a nurse or medic, as she got paper towels and the bar of soap for me to clean the wound with. She never cringed at all the blood, just wanted to help her daddy. Both kids did an excellent job catching fish, but we managed to probably lose 60% of our hook ups at the boat. We went home with 17 sockeye for the 4 of us. Day two, my wife, friend and I were limited, off the water and eating breakfast by 7am. Wife did battle with a 37" king and this release went much better. Great couple of days of fishing, some of the best fun I've ever had. I can't eat enough of those tasty things either!

Nicely done C-money!  I was over fishing below Wells for a few days.  It was a bit slow until the last morning but it was still great fun.  I have property below Wells that I camp on and I just don't want to hassle going up to Brewster even though the fishing can be better.  The fish this year are about 2 to 3 times the size of the fish we were catching last year.  They averaged between 3 to 6 pounds.

The fish are for sure bigger this year. I have never fished below Wells, I'd like to some day. Gonna try and fish Brewster Friday!!!

A camping trip we had planned got cancelled, so I'm heading up there July 17-19 with the wife and kids.  They've never done a Brewster trip with me, so I'm extremely stoked! I hope this hot weather keeps up and holds them there for at least a couple few more weeks.  I have been reading a lot of great reports for Lake Pateros at http://www.northwestfishingreports.com/ I've used that school parking lot a few times, which works great!  Good luck everyone. Rip some lips!

Fishing is good, 15 sockeye the last two days for the boy and I. It was pretty cool as I think he got to fight more than he could handle. We lost over half the fish we hooked.(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimages.tapatalk-cdn.com%2F15%2F07%2F07%2F0e9d132cdbc97724419ea921f6749283.jpg&hash=45907e06918c092df35599d57b74414dba9ddf44)(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimages.tapatalk-cdn.com%2F15%2F07%2F07%2F6162979ba4ef8ebf2ec3091d6403e32c.jpg&hash=c0af77cd9241e1a5db453de7840d7c4de985df62)(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimages.tapatalk-cdn.com%2F15%2F07%2F07%2Ff13805b52969c559ed84bfe227ae122a.jpg&hash=3e557900066c1020716804eb43e0e7cb83b76e6a)

Talked to a buddy who is guiding down there say's it has fallen off and not like it was. Also say's the launch is a complete cluster.  You may sit in line for over and hour to launch.  :dunno:

The count's over Bonneville have dropped over the last week to half of what they were.

I think the city will end up putting in a larger launch or multiple launches.  That fishery is a money maker and I would think they would keep that going and in doing so making easier access would be their next goal.
