Title: Chelan butte Ram (story added)
Post by: Archery King on July 02, 2015, 08:48:00 AM
Went and scouted the unit yesterday, mainly just learning the lay of the land.  I did see 29 rams 2 I feel are on the hit list for now.  It was really hot and made glassing tough but I did get a few pics.  I'm very excited to get after one of these big boys.

The two rams I videos this week are beautiful.  If I don't find a bigger ram I don't care I would be thrilled with either one.  Really is hard to slept some nights thinking about it!

good looking rams, I don't think those are the biggest two on the butte though, glad to hear you got a good start.

I have seen a few ram herds up there but only find mostly smaller guys in them. The bigger boys I have spotted were usually out by themselves or in smaller groups. There are certainly some good animals up there and by the time of the hunt you should have them pinpointed. Good luck, that will be an awesome hunt. Certainly one of the envious ones!

Just got a text from a buddy over there, the Butte is on fire, Chelan side behind Slidewaters area heading up hill fast.

I've mentioned this several times before about the Butte. A fire is the only thing that get in your way with that tag.  Hoping for the best for the herd and your tag.

Anybody no how screwed I am?  Really Hoping This Doesn't Ruin My Hunt :( .  I'll do my best no matter what just hope there are some sheep still living there come september.

As of right now. Not good. With all the structures in danger they will let the backside of the butte burn. Saving houses and people's property come first Pray for rain.

Remember  brown butt ? He was shot in the ash and retardant. Your sheep may be condensed.  Just see how it falls.good luck and let's hope everyone there is safe

Depending on how big the fire gets the rams may be harder to find.  Still lots of time between now and the opener for things to get under control.

Looks like the fire started on the lake side and moved up over the top. My guess is the sheep moved down toward the river or into the Butte rocks, maybe south toward Entiat. Either way you should be okay so don't sweat it, it's actually more likely to make spotting them easier. :twocents:

^^ I agree. I bet they will be congregated and possibly easier to locate and compare with eachother. Still have some time for things to settle down too.

Truly a shame to see all those homes burned on the news.  Wild fires are very unforgiving,  hope everyone got out safe.  Sad days for the community of Chelan

Archery King...it might be a good idea to get ahold of the District Bio (David Volson) out of the Wenatchee office...I know that fire swept fast...fast enough any sheep that was on the east side of the mountain (near the gorge) probably didn't make it...my brother is one of the guys who took the DC-10 retardant drop video near the high school...the fire took off fast once the winds kicked up...and any sheep behind the Wal-Mart are probably gone too, as it burned all of that mountain as well as all the way to Apple Acres, then joined the Antione Creek Fire and continued all the way to Alta lake, within 24 hours, which means those sheep had nowhere to go.

I do agree that most of the sheep on the actual Butte itself probably headed down towards the river and orchards and made it through OK, but your entire unit (other than the lower backside, for now) was burned). Just letting you know the truth...I also told the guy who has the Chelan South Goat tag to call the bio a few weeks ago when the Wolverine Fire took out his goat unit...but I never heard back from him.

Once the fires die down, do yourself and the local community a favor, go over there and scout it out, buy a hamburger at a local drive-in, some chips and soda's as the local "mom & pop" store, and get your gas at a local gas station...they need all the $$$ they can get as my hometown relies on the tourism.

I bet the local gas stations are making a little bit off the firefighters. Nothing like normal but something. Heck last year during the Fires I would avoid the gas station. To many guys standing in line.

The gas stations, grocery stores, hardware stores, etc., are all making a ton of money right now from all the people there fighting the fires. Way more than they make from tourists I bet.

Thanks for the advice and info guys.  I drove down there Tuesday and it saw a lot of sheep alive and well.  I didn't look into day break canyon but I no it burned.  I will defiantly do all I can to support small town communities like chelan.  I know all to well the effects of wildfires, when my families ranch burned in 2008.  A small town like chelan will bounce back I'm sure of it!

HARD NO TO BE CONCERNED WITH SUCH A SPECIAL TAG ..... my prayers are with the community but feel for tag holders  that have waited there whole lives for a tag .... I will make sure and support the fire areas with my purchases in the following months .... good luck finding a bute.

On another note, perhaps one of the very few successful programs WDFW have put together, besides the whole turkey program and maybe one or two more, the sheep transplant from Clemens to the Butte has turned out great. The sheep really took off and grew rapidly, creating a fantastic trophy hunt for hunters and sheep watching for the general public.

For a few years a few of us had been asking for a "ear tag" hunt, to give another hunter a OIL opportunity and not simply watch as these older class, non breeding rams, die of old age on the Butte, and at the same time create revenue for the program.

We had hoped that WDFW could come up with a hunt, but limit it to a special group, youth, disabled etc. and NOT at the same time open it up to additional hunting, ie raffle and auction. Certainly they write the rules and could have done it while at the same time restricting it to maintain the quality of the herd...............but it seems that is not the case.

I guess my disappointment with WDFW caving to revenue generation as priority one once again shouldnt come as a shock, my faith in them doing anything without seeing dollar signs is finished! :twocents:

I was under the impression the raffle tags couldn't hunt any sheep unit unless there was more than one tag?

You are correct, but... due to an oversight from the dept. the way it is currently worded, the new disabled tag counts as the second permit issued for Chelan Butte.  Thus, the raffle guy, and auction tag guy can hunt the Butte this year.

There are multiple 170+ rams in that herd, you'll be fine.  No reason to panic, its just BS from the game department that's all.

I recommended the ear tag permit but had hoped they would have done it years ago when there was more than one alive.  I also recommended they open it up to a second tag at meetings this last year.  I saw way too many old mature rams that would all die in there and not be harvested.  If I remember correctly I saw 12+ 170" rams in there last year and over 45 in 3 days.  This unit can handle it for at least one year, maybe two.   It should be noted that the auction holder wouldn't have killed a ram in there last year.  They found a larger ram than anything on the butte on Hall Mtn.  Do you want opportunity or do you want old rams to die?  :twocents:

Shame on those involved with hunting due to this loophole.   A plan is in the works to modify the rules to allow for additional harvest while maintaining quality in a couple units.  The John Day in Oregon was off the charts 15 years ago, now due to excessive pressure and over harvest, a hunter is lucky to get a 165.

Shame on WDFW for not doing their diligence with this "old ram" proposal. Pathetic.

Game dept needs to dump the North and South Central sheep raffles bundled in with the rest of the animals.
Let them stick with the Cali raffle and governors tag.    That will help out a lot.
Money doesn't put sheep back on the Mtn.  Time for the dept to step up and do the right thing!

It really shouldn't put a damper on anything.  There are a number of old trophy rams in there.  You will have plenty to choose from.  99% of us will never have a shot at a large trophy ram like you will.

Having 35 170"+ rams wandering around will do everyone a lot of good the first time a disease outbreak hits this herd.  Trophy potential is nice, but Pope is right.  Maximize your opportunity as much as you can.

So if you had the raffle tag, you wouldn't hunt there as a matter of principal?

Is it ok to hunt the Asotin unit this year even though there was a slaughter in there last year between the hunters, the native hunting and the poaching?

I'm with PopeSP on this one.  I saw 42 Rams on Tuesday, 5 were exceptional.  Even though the Gov and Cali Raffle killed Tuesday, you still have the NCentral Raffle who can hunt the Butte.  One draw tag and this ear tag ram, which by the way is a dandy.

Plenty of quality in there to give everyone a chance at a truly giant Cali and still have quality left for next year when this "loophole" is fixed.

Good luck Gentlemen!

He guys sorry for the wait been busy.  The hunt started Thursday the 24th, the day after getting back from my honeymoon in south Africa but that's another story.  My wife, father and I battled jet lag but managed to get all are gear ready and set out for the butte.  We were joined by my brother his fiance, my uncle, and a friend from Racked up outdoors to film the trip.  Thursday and Friday I dedicated to scouting only!  I want to be certain I would be pursuing the biggest ram left in the unit. I say left as many know there were three guys able to hunt before me and two rams had already been taken.  For the record I do not hold a grudge against those three gentlemen they did not break any rules, if I were pissed at any one it would be wdfw.  By this time I had put all that behind me and just wanted to have fun and take the best ram I could.
Friday we split into three groups.  My father and uncle scoured one side of the butte while my brother took another side, and I took a boat to search the cliffs along the columbia.  That night we all came together and looked over all the vrlodeo and phone scope images to decide on what ram we would take.  I decided I would take this ram with the fresh notch in his right horn.
Saturday morning was cold and windy as we glassed from the towers.  Within minutes my brother glassed up the big ram from the day before. The hunt was on as we took off down the hill, to out surprise the ram was in rut mode and was out pacing us as he decended all the way to the river.  After a few tense hours my dad and uncle relocated him and we were back on him.  I snuck to 75 yards of the ram and at this point decided I would ditch my shoes and the rest of the team besides the camera man to close into final bow range.  After a 30 min crawl I was within 39 yards of the bedded ram just needing him to stand to expose his vitals.  As many hunts go the wind sifted in his favor and he was gone just like that.  I dropped the bow and my brother met me with the rifle for a shake off hand 289 yard shot that struck the ram right behind the shoulder.  The ram was down...  I really can't explain how I felt at that moment.  This oppertunity meant alot to me this was my second ram in my quest to kill the north American slam and to get to share it with my friends and family was priceless.
I shot the ram with a 257 wthby barns 100 gr ttsx.  The score of the ram really doesn't matter and because of some trolls on the Internet I will not share my official score of the ram.  I will say he is going to score over 180... thank you to everyone on here who has helped out and to all those that were there truly an a zing oppertunity.

Great ram.  We had him at under 200 yards last year and the hunter decided to pass.  He ended up shooting one that was a different style/look even though it ended up scoring a couple inches smaller.  We knew this ram was big and I had him at 178" last year.  Looks like he grew about an inch.  I know your ram is bigger than one of the other two rams taken and maybe the other but I haven't seen that pic yet.  You got a huge ram and one of the biggest taken in this state.  Not sure what there is to be mad at WDFW about.  Congrats!

Some other member posted the same question. I think it has to do with his comments with about the game department. And for the record; I am up late every night (2am bedtime).  :chuckle:

He got a great ram, I'd bet he is over it!

That being said, I hope WDFW figures out their "mistake" for next year's draw, the results will speak for themselves, whether it really was a mistake or a "on purpose accident".
