Title: 2014 Peaches Bull back from Olympic Taxidermy!
Post by: Rob on July 04, 2015, 10:47:44 PM
After only 8 months from the time I pulled the trigger, I was notified by Buzzie at Olympic Taxidermy that my mount was ready for pickup!  I elected to have a wall pedestal mount done and I am very happy with the way it came out.

I had to wait a few days to get help to pick it up and get it mounted, but I picked it up yesterday, and got it mounted today thanks to the help of my inlaws and reluctant wife.

I had a spot picked out for it right above the front door, but alas, when it arrived, it was too big.  The spot I had was about 5 1/2 feet tall, and this mount ended up being 6 feet 3 inches from top to bottom!  Much bigger than I had been expecting.  It also sticks 3 and a half feet out from the wall which is a lot further than I had expected.

I had to move the sailfish from the adjacent wall and relegate it to the garage, but it is worth it.  I have been looking at that fish for over 24 years so a change is in order anyway.

Hanging it was an adventure.  My father in law and I tried to get it on the wall the day before but we could not line up the holes with the hardware while balancing on ladders and holding the 50 or so pound mount over our heads.  So we put it back in the living room for the night and decided to give it another go on the 4th.

I put two eye bolts into the ceiling, and then in true mountaineer spirit, built a 3 point redundant anchor using a double runner around each antler and a quad runner around the neck tied together with a figure 8 power point.  This was connected via a locker to my 30 meter glacier rope and run through a 3-1 pulley system.  My wife held the ladder down while my father in law and I wrestled the elk up the ladder.   My mother in law photo documented the event for insurance purposes and was a runner for the various bits we needed during the process.

It was a bonding experience for sure.  Took about an hour but we got it on the wall and I'm pretty happy!

Thanks everyone.  Very happy with the way this worked out.  The bull brings back memories of sitting in the rain and cold on an 11 day pack in trip.  Such miserable weather on that one.  Everything was wet.  Two huge wind storms.  Two days we did not even leave the tent it was so bad.  Rain, snow, fog, wind and one day of sun.  Had some lessons learned about heating with propane (it burns wet and brings a lot of condensation into the tent I now know!). Good times with a good buddy too.

But I would not trade the hunt for anything!  It was a great trip even with the challenges.  Perhaps it was a great trip because of them.  In the words of Pat McManus...  It was a fine and pleasant misery.

No idea on the age, but I agree, he does not look like an old warrior.

I am guessing you can get a wall pedestal like the one I got for between 1500 and 2,000 depending on who you go with.  I am a huge fan of wall pedestals.  This is my 4th one and I'll never do another straight shoulder mount.  the only down side is that they are a bit more particular with regard to where they will fit since they are looking hard right or hard left.
