Ewes are funny little animals. Let's start a ewe thread. Here is my first one...

Another one of my favorites...

ISO 100, F4, 1/1000th (Canon 40D & 400mm F4 DO)
And they say this lens isn't that sharp Huntnphool... :P
-
man, that picture almost, i say almost makes me think wolfs would be good.... no, never mind wolf are worthless!
-
Maybe my ewe idea wasn't such a great idea. I'll keep trying to bring these oft ignored creatures to the forefront... ;)

Canon 40D, 400mm F4 DO shot at ISO 100, f4, 1/1000th

I like it Pope, nice pics. I too like the ewe. My point and shoot doesn't do them the justice they deserve.
-
Alright Pope, I have a couple. I suppose that lens does look okay, but I have some sharp images taken with the 100-400 as well but you know what they say about that one too :dunno:
-
Ewe crack me up. :chuckle:

I know you don't like shooting with the high sun Shawn but I like the contrast the shadows bring in those shots. :dunno: I like how you are posting the specs on the shots, I should do that as well I think it will help everyone out, what do you think? :dunno:

I got a fEWE too :chuckle:

I like this thread! All wild sheep are worthy of the camera, not just the big rams. These ewes are the future of the herd.
-
Agreed Tom, nice pics. Here are a couple more.

Gotta love ewes... ;)

Cool pics, that reminds me of a Gamsbock (game animal from Austria)
-
Call me crazy, but isn't that a chamois Austrian Hunter? Isn't a Gemsbok the one with tall thin horns? :dunno:
-
Call me crazy, but isn't that a chamois
You are very correct. Those animals are not even on the same continent.
-
dang huntnphool the 100-400 looks dang good, man its a sweet lens (right pope)

:chuckle: Saw that response coming a mile away :chuckle: You could take pics of the new world record Cali with that lens and Pope wouldn't look at them.
-
Someone show me a SHARP photo with good bokeh from that lens and I'll eat crow... :chuckle:

Its called Gamsbock not like the African Gemsbok, you can goggle it. And yes Chamois is the English name for Gamsbock.

rosscrazy, two different continents and two different animals, one small horns from Austria call Gamsbock and one long thin horn from Africa called Gemsbok ;)

I'll stand corrected on the Gamsbok. Crazy stuff. You were right Austrian Hunter. :o

You have to remember Pope, not many of the members on this site are going out to capture a image for the cover of Ourdoor Life either. That lens is plenty sharp for 99% of the people wanting a lens that will handle a wide range of situations without the need to pack separate lenses and adaptors, or not looking to make a living from the images they get. At around $1k pre owned, it is a good lens for the average hunter/outdoor enthusiast. Most find images like this plenty sharp and good bokeh for their hunting trips. :twocents:

I have to agree with . . . well, both of you. I am generally less than thrilled with the sharpness from the 100-400, but there have been many images I've taken with it that I've been pleased with. But Pope's right in that many times the images it provides lack the kind of tack sharpness that we'd like to have on a consistent basis. Below are a couple of the exceptions, where the 100-400 performed in a very satisfactory manner:
-
I know that when Timber was shooting with his (and he takes great pics) and I handed him the 400, he was twitterpated until he went and bought that 400. :chuckle: Now you all will be blessed with even "better" pictures from him. LOL :)

Agreed, but lets not get it twisted either, how many on this site can run out and drop $6K-$10K on a lens? :dunno:

Very good point. Also, who can always be packing a big heavy supertelephoto into the bush? If you need to take extra clothes, water, and food in your pack, you can pretty much rule out the ability to also carry a huge heavy lens. So the 100-400 does have it's place. And with IS you don't necessarily need to pack a tripod along, too.
Wow - we've really gotten off topic. I just realized this is a thread about ewes.
Here's an attempt to "restore the thread" - a bunch of ewes from the Oroville herd. There are also 2 young rams mixed in.
-
Speaking of ewes, saw a heard of them perched on a rock cropping above the NEW FENCE being put in on the Swakane. They are making big progress on it. Might hamper my photo efforts a bit, but cool to save some sheep to photgrpah in the future. I wonder how effective it will be with it being broken up with private property. I wonder how many will get trappe don the road in a fenced section.
-
I saw that last week Bone, they have made it a long way in just a few days. The fence sure looks spindly though. Would be nice if they put a few doors but it looks like we will just have to climb it.

The 100-400 has it's place, just not in my bag. It's always a tempting lens because of the versatility. However, I can some the lens up in one sentence: IT DOES EVERYTHING GOOD BUT NOTHING EXCELLENT.
Actually, if I was a bird in flight type of guy I think it does that excellent because you would have enough light to stop it down and make it sharp and you often get a lot of background separation with a bird in flight or even on water. Sorry, but I don't think you can convince me to have it over the 300mm f4 and a 1.4x when needed.
Also, I don't say this with the intent to recommend or sway other from it. Other people can buy what they like for their budget. Also, if you own the 100-400, don't take it as an insult to your lens. Some guys like Heinz and other guys like Hunts ketchup. To each his own.

I had one and sold it when I upgraded to a 300. I kind of miss it for convenience. If I'm not going on a dedicated photo trip, I could throw it in a shoulder bag with a body, flash and couple other lenses and feel like I had things covered.
There was one on CraigsList today for $900!! I emailed the guy, thinking if it was decent I would buy it and sell it for a profit. The thing was gone in less than 45 minutes from posting.

I think it's one of their best selling lenses. It's very popular. There have been rumors of an upgraded version for a while but nothing yet. Honestly, why would you upgrade a lens that is selling like gangbusters? I'm definitely in the minority with my opinion on this lens. That being said, I'm in the minority on a lot of opinions around here... :chuckle:
Here is one of my 100-400 shots...
