Title: Cold blind problems
Post by: Commando on July 09, 2015, 05:39:13 PM: Me and my dog started running cold blinds earlier this week. So far will leave the line but he will not run a straight line. As soon as he is sent he will veer either left or right, then it takes a ton of whistle sits and casts to get him to the bumper. I'm talking 10-20 different casts to get him there. Is that normal for the start of running cold blinds or should I go back to the pattern field? We were on patterns for a few weeks so I feel like he has that down, maybe try pattern blinds in a new field? Or should I just keep running the cold blinds and hope he will eventually figure it all out? Thanks guys I appreciate all the help.

Dog doesnt believe the bird is where you're sending him.

I would work blinds by starting with the basics.

Dog out of the box and heeled 100 yds to drop (pile) 6 birds. I command mark and drop all 6.
Command heel and walk back to the truck. Note use a flag@ the pile so "you" know where to send him.

Your dog has knowlege of the drop and will go there. if he comes back with more then one dont leave more then one.

I used to mow paths in the pasture and play "baseball" with the dog working remotely from the pitchers mound.

You can be where you want to be in a week or so. Stop before it gets boring. And dont play too long in this heat.

Dont play games though..... have the bird where you say it is.

Later (hunting season) you can cast down wind of your downed birds, scent will cover the mis-cast if there is one.

Assuming you are training a retriever?

Yes he does. I actually just received TRT yesterday to put my pup through after following Hillmann's puppy program.

Idont have trt but want it. I never noticed that captain did that till you pointed it out. I am going to use the walk around blinds with my pup tomorrow hopefully that helps out.

In his program I am currently working on 3 handed casting and the next step is to add "piles" to the 3 spots.

Happy, do you know of any good areas down here in the Vancouver/North Portland area to train? I've gone over to Sauvie a couple of times but it's time consuming to get over there, and right now the water level is really low. I'll be looking for a swimby pond in the next month or so also.
