I know this guy has about another month or so of growing to do, but I'm just curious of a ballpark score. I have a multi-season tag and if I may have a crack at him going Pope and Young I might try early archery instead of waiting for modern. Oh, and in the big scheme of things I don't really care what he scores and he is #1 on my hit-list anyway. But it would be cool to go Pope and Young and would dedicate some time to it if I have a chance. One way or another hopefully he'll be in my freezer in a few months.
Thanks!

:yeah: He's going down! Looks like he'll just be a pig 4x4, I don't think he'll grow anymore points.
-
140ish
-
:yeah: and he is done growing
-
He is a great buck and I would hammer him but I don't think he'll go 140"
-
Cool buck, looks like he is about done growing. I think pope and young minimum wt is like 120 or 125 right? Cant remember... He should be in that range. Good luck killing him!
-
P&Y minimum is 125
-
He ain't done growin
-
No he has a whole month to grow he will be in the high 140 to 150 I have a 140 and he does have the eyegaurds that buck does
-
That buck is basically done growing. Look at the points they are no longer rounded and are pointed. He may have a couple inches to add total. That buck is no where near 140. I'll give it 120. 8 inch g1 and 2. Short G3. Nothing huge on beams or mass.
Definitely a good buck and cool brow tines!
Hope you can get him. He'd make a great trophy
-
120 max, :twocents:
-
140 :yike: even if it had G4's it wouldn't make 140.
That buck is done growing .. People don't understand antler growth.. Look for knobs at the end of each point when you see that they will grow .. This buck is but done.

Example this buck is growing still

This buck is all but done ..these pics are recent . Some bucks start and grow early and fast and some bucks start slow and finish fast

150 :chuckle: No way. It takes a hell of a wt to make 150, especially in a 4x4 frame.

Looking at the second picture it actually looks like the antler tips are still pretty rounded. I think he will grow a little more.

Spot on! Not all bucks are the same. Just like humans they grow at different rates some earlier some later.
-
I love it when guys can say exactly what a deer will score from a picture and imply everyone else is an idiot.
-
don't see where anyone is implying anyone else is an idiot, I see it as he is educating, people think as long as deer have velvet on they are still growing and that is just not true
-
:yeah: Velvet doesn't mean growth . Once the hardening process starts its all over it starts as a thin eggshell under the velvet and slowly moving inwards.. This process doesn't happen overnight and takes weeks to happen and once they are hard they can carry around the velvet for days to a week or so. What you see now with whitetails for the most part is what you will see come fall, the mountain bucks always seem to finish later than lowland and farm bucks.
-
I can score a deer in velvet within a couple of inches with a couple of good pics .I watch whitetails almost nightly and mornings all thru the summer for 25 years . I've watched thousands of whitetail bucks grow and hundreds I've been able to watch year after year.

Now you're just rubbing it in, sounds like you are living the dream.

I'll be checking the cameras again in mid-august. Hopefully I have more of him and he gives me a better idea of how big he ended up
-
I dont mean to hi jack this page but since we are on the topic and i have NO CLUE how to judge and animal.... This is the biggest deer that i have had on camera. could anyone tell me what they think he would score? :dunno:
I do have a couple night time pics if that will help? Based of what was said above... I am guessing 110-115? (lets see how close i am... :chuckle:)
-
Based on that pic I would say you are right on with 110-115

:yeah:
also not symmetrical.. give him another year.....120 tops... with major deducts...
-
I agree, its probably a 120 type buck. I'm not sure where these major deductions are though. :dunno:

HAHAHAHA! Give him another year!!! I'm by no means a trophy hunter, if he walks in he's getting drug out. I merely asked score because I think it would be cool to get him archery if I could get him into P&Y, but if not he's a hell of a trophy for me. I don't let good bucks walk.
-
Go get em Tony!!! good luck and post some pics after you get him!
-

I don't see where anyone implied anyone else is an idiot. And I have been spot on on 4 bucks I have killed... Within an inch or 2. Judging from trail cam pics.
-
As a general rule, whitetail bucks are not growing right now. Maybe a couple inches but no new points are popping out in July.
-
9 out of 10 shooter bucks I have on cam now are done growing..its a rarity to have mature whitetails putting on inches this time of year. I have 2 bucks still growing right now and look to add quite abit by the end of the month. A tell tale sign they are still growing is when you cam takes pic in IR mode you will see a shine almost to a knob on the point tips that goes away as the turn to points
-
So much for he's done growing. Now what's his score?
-
A newer buck, looks to be a 5x6
-
This guy put a ton of horn since July

:yeah:
I have seen a little growth in July on the late bloomers but pretty much none in August, they are in the hardening stage by then and all bucks in my area sept the blue moon odd ball they will all be hard horned by sept 3rd 90% normally by 9/1
-
I know they are done growing now, curious as to possible scores.
-
That 4 is a dang nice buck. He looks to have put on around 2 inches to each tine. So a total of 10-12 inches total. I'm thinking he would be very near the pope and young minimum now. Give or take a few. :twocents: go get him and tell us for sure.
-
I'd say 125-135 but I'm not the best judge for deer. Deff a shooter in my book!
-
Would either of the other 2 bucks score higher due to more points or does the size and symmetry of the 4x4 win out? Sorry I'm totally in the dark when it comes to scoring and never even thought I'd be asking these questions. Thanks!

That 4 has great tine length and width...if they were side by side I'd take him
-
I'm guessing they are within +- 5 inches on score. I think the 4 is the older deer and he would be my target over the others. They have lots of potential in coming year. The 4 is likely at his max. :twocents:
-
It's crazy how clean that 4 is. I don't ever see any big whitetails that are trash free.
-
thanks for everyone's input. I appreciate it.
-
Score wise...gosh, somebody else could be closer but I'd say right around 135 for both? :dunno: Shane, Chris?

id say probably right in there with 130-135.
Those big 4s are always pretty tough. Especially with time length like that.
-
I'm stickin with my 140ish guess that all the experts laughed at.

Always have to get a jab in somewhere...
-
I hope he kills it and gets it scored officially. Then we can see how far off we all are
-
-
135
-
I think the 4 is the nicest looking buck and he'll probably score as well and maybe slightly better than the 5's. Most hunters wouldn't pass any of those bucks, good luck, hope to see you in one of the next photos with one of those bucks!
