Title: Humpy Report Thread: 2015
Post by: h20hunter on July 20, 2015, 09:47:32 AM
So....anyone fishing area 9 for humpies intentionally? Hook ups? Trying to watch for the numbers to increase to begin doing some trolling. Lets use this thead for updates on marine areas and even river reports. Bring on the pinks!

I ran one rod at pink depths yesterday at Midchannel.  We hit six, landed three, in about two hours.

Thanks....I think this Sunday I may drop a few pots and make a run down by the bar to drag some gear. Hope they don't all come in to early.....we got Salmon for Soldiers at the end of next month. At this rate we may be looking for silvers by then!

My very poor-fisherman brother has been limiting in under an hour nearly every day up on the islands (West side of San Juan).  They should be here soon.

Yes, they are super thick in the San Juans. Was up on the west side of SJI last weekend and it was nuts.

Hooked about 40 on the SW side of SJI on Saturday. Got maybe 15 to the boat, kept 7 fat ones. Lots of fun. On the way back to Cornet Bay we saw lots of jumpers coming across the Channel towards Deception Pass. A few have been caught out around Possession lately so I predict large numbers in the Everett area in the next 10 days. I agree, I hope they don't all show too soon, I'm fishing the SFS event at the end of August also. But, if the pinks are that early then the Silvers will probably also be early.

I was at Port Angeles last weekend and they were totally thick in the winter hole. We could have easily caught 100 between two of us jigging if I wouldn't have run away from them...they are definitely on the way and I would guess they will be deep in the sound by early august or probably a week earlier then a normal humpy year...hope that helps....Les

None were hooked last weekend near Tacoma...we fished for a couple hours near Ruston...I get this isn't a big area for pinks but throwing it out there...we caught 4 limits of crab in less than 3 hours...mainly because we had a 2 hour soak

I seldom use pink, unless I'm throwing a jig into a school on the surface.  If just trolling, I go with normal green and white stuff.  The last couple weekends we've caught all we want with a basic green or white/glow flasher and green Ace Hi Fly or Irish Cream spoon.  My take is that kings and coho won't bite the pink, but pinks seem perfectly willing and able to bite green and white.  Why not allow yourself to catch both?
Title: Re: Humpy Report Thread: 2015

Actually pink is a very good color for kings and Coho when fished no deeper than 40' or so.

I have a question about beach fishing for pinks - Is there a certain tide that is better or worse? I have only caught one at Dash Point out of the 5 or 6 times I have gone. I do OK on the river, but I am pretty sure this is not due to my expertise.
Title: Re: Humpy Report Thread: 2015
Post by: WSU on July 23, 2015, 03:07:11 PM
Yes but what tide is best will depend on the particular beach.  I'm not familiar with Dash point but I'd wager that a google search would give you some info.

I have had best beach luck at high and incoming tide.  Low tide you snag more bottom.

Hooked one half way between Dash and Tacoma...using a pink 2.5 oz buzz bomb... Lost it right at the boat. It was a nice fish. We were only targeting today because we were letting our crab pots soak....Still waiting for my first pink to be landed

I fished with pink hoochies all the time out of Westport and cleaned up on the coho and kings, pretty much all I used.

Here, I've had best luck this year with the pearl white coho killer trolled behind a gibbs break-away dodger/flasher in green.

Landed four today in 2 hours off Reef Point Cypress Island on the way home from dropping my wife in town.

We liked to go after pinks with light gear so we were actually targeting pinks.

When it was business as usual, we'd troll green, white or just bait.

Think there just hitting point no point now. Got 7 in the boat with more takedowns not even trying for them. We were even 90ft down for kings! Haven't gotten any at possession but also haven't been trying. Should be coming down soon though

they are at the west side of possession but for a slam dunk I would head a little farther to skunk bay, it was unreal today trying to get down thru them to the kings.  word on the VHF was they were picking up a few at the bubble, that would be a good choice for close  to Everett run

Lots of  pinks on the outside of san juan island right now we were hooking them as deep as 125' going for kings.  When you find schools jumping I'd you cast a pink buzz bomb into them it was  a hookup every time

Fished reef point on Friday. Landed 3 pinks and 1 coho. We were only at 32' and 45'.

I was wondering when the first coho would show.  Fished there Thurs and Sat.  Saturday all of our fish were at 92' in 95-105 feet deep, but no coho.

Limited (pinks) for three of us by ten today at Eagle Point, had to release two short Kings.   :(  Seems the larger fish are finally starting to show.  One male today even had a hump starting.

So, what tide is best when fishing for Pinks?   :dunno:

I am headed back to Cornett Bay / San Juans for 9 days with some family from New Mexico.  I would sure love to see them catch a pink or two!  Are they still up in the islands or already south?  :dunno:

I always found incoming to be best, but others might have different experiences.  Seemed like they wanted to get into the newly wetted areas to get any kind of shrimp or worms that may have come up to the surface while the tide was out.

When are you headed up Brian?  The fish will be coming until at least the end of the month. You can fish  west beach on the tail end of the flood until slack, they will catch fish. That's the part of the tide that's been the best for me.  Good luck!

No difference from my experience off Eagle Point.  Seems best on incoming off Reef Point, Cypress.

Tons of pinks still off San Juan, the coho should start showing pretty soon, especially since we'll have to watch the Indians net the wild coho we have to release after Aug 1.   :bash:

Landed a nice 7 pound Sockeye out there today as a bonus.

Fished yesterday afternoon from ~3:30pm until ~7pm.  Most of the flood and into slack.  Picked up one at 80ft during slack.  Guys around us each picked up one (2 boats), and that was it.  North of shipwreck.

In other wins, I caught a crab pot while trolling in 200ft of water.  I didn't know my line was strong enough to bring up 100 feet of leaded line and a whole pot, but turns out it is.  I bet that is one the guy never expected to get back again.

Limited on Dungies with the gf as well.
Title: Re: Humpy Report Thread: 2015

Bottom line: We sucked this weekend.

Dropped pots off hat and motored south. Joined the boats and began trolling. Hooked up, long line release. Keep going, hook up, jumper and threw the hook, keep going, fish on get to the rod no fish. Keep trolling, fish on, bring it in and right behind the boat comes a behomith of a seal that grabbed my fish, took it under and then came up and devoured it right on the surface by u. 4 takedowns....zero fish.

Go pull pots. Two of the four had one side of the pot open....old pots getting worn out. Lots of females and small males. Soaked them one more time, called it by noon with only three crab.

Oh well.....I've had great fishing every time we've been out. Just not my day.

3/5 on Saturday, 0/1 on Sunday  Fished south of Muk all the way down and half way across the bar.  Seemed to do better out in the middle of nowhere then with the fleet up against the shore.  On Sat, most boats looked to have 1-3 fish and only saw maybe 3 actually caught on Sunday.

13 crab on Sat and 2 on Sunday, they must just take the day off.

Fished on Saturday from the ferry down to shipwreck, avoided the boat crowd just south of there.
We did ok, put 3 silvers and 1 pink in the boat, lost 5 at the boat and had 2 takedowns that we never saw.

Just my observation from Sunday was that the bite was early, we had lines in the water at 5:30 and the first fish in the boat at 5:40, had the last fish in the boat around 9 with all the fun inbetween, after that we changed depth, speed, gear etc with only one takedown bewtween 9-11:30.
Had fish all over the finder at 40ft on down to 100ft, kept in them but no luck.

Did get a limit of crab for us both in one pull (4 pots) and even had a few soft we threw back.

Saw h2ohunter and his broinlaw, they did not even wave at us, even when we were 40yds off his port side, watched the broinlaw loose a fish even., Or even when they ran north and went right past us....but head...

One thing i noticed was that h20 was trolling faster than we were.... :twocents:

The pinks should be in thick soon, and then it will be taking the kids out to have some fun...

Was trying to keep my speed right around 1.5. I like to normally troll a touch slower but figured with a few less fish in the area we should cover a little more ground. We did get all of our take downs on the bright pink wiht glitter skirt hoochie....none on the plain ol pink hoochie.

We fished the west side of San Juan Island yesterday, despite NOAA's warning of 1-3 foot wind waves that didn't materialize - a 15 mile run in a 15' whaler into 1-3 foot waves is no bueno.  But the wind forecast on windfinder looked good, so we went for it and were rewarded with fantastic water conditions.  That's the third time in a row that the NOAA forecast didn't pan out.  Anyway....

Didn't see any chinook, although my six year old kid caught two clipped coho.  Filled out the remainder of our punch cards with plentiful pinks.  Several boats around us were throwing jigs and they appeared to be doing well, at least before the orcas and seiners showed up and the bite stopped.

That was fun.  The last 15 minutes was as chaotic as I think I've ever seen humpy fishing.

You guys are having all the fun.  The closest I got to a boat was to pick my wife up at the Anacortes ferry on Sunday.  I had some extra time so I went out to Washington park and chatted with a couple guys at the dock.  Sounded like it wasn't to bad for pinks up there.  While standing on the dock I had some woman walk up to me and start jumping down my throat about how my trailer "bumped" in line and cut off their boat...  She wasn't interested in hearing from me that my boat was parked and in a different county.   :chuckle:  Sheesh.

Has anyone ever hear of people fishing for them around the Everett area if so whats the best time of the year to fish it and what area would be good to try, I would really love to fish for these pinks but I don't have a boat so the area would have to be for bank fishing. PM me please I would really appriciate it.

The Snohomish River is your friend in the Everett area. There is bank access off Lowell-Larimer road as well as at, below, and above Snohomish.

They catch them off the shore at Picnic Point.  The best time is right now through about labor day.

Another good access point from the bank for pinks as well as silvers is off the beach at Posssion Point Bait Company. I believe they still let you fish there. Cal them up. Some fun times there fishing for silvers with live herring under a float.

Lots of good fishing from shore.  I recommend lots of gear/jigs if you are fishing lower tides as there can a lot of snags.

Here is one of my old spots:

East of the launch on Lowell-Larimer, past the launch....there is a water spillway kinda thing. The pinks will come in when the tide is in and circle in that one area. Now, the mouth is lined with stumps so you don't want to be casting towards the river. There were paths that could put you on the bank. I've bonked a ton of humpies in that spot.

looks like you are in Wenatchee, when are you planning a trip over?, I could probably get you out in the salt, or I fished the Snohomish river for 30 years and I could show you some areas.....fish will be much better coming from the salt than when their running up that river.

launched at dawn from Everett today.

Wasn't catching jack-diddly at shipwreck, and only saw one landed.

Headed about 1.5 miles south. There was only 1 boat near us.

Started hooking up every five minutes or so. Didn't take long for 2 of us to limit out and pick up 10 crabs on the way back in.

First time ever salmon fishing without someone's help and I guess it worked out just fine.

Three person limit on Saturday by 10, included a five pound Sockeye, three person limit today, included a 15 pound king.  Definitely slower fishing overall with the Indian purse seiners and gill netters off San Juan.

I was wondering if anyone has caught humpies on the north side of Camano Island?
Opens Aug1st

Copy that.... Just wondering if anyone has fished up there with any luck?

I’ve caught pinks in Utsalady Bay many years ago.  I assume they still pass through there on their way up the Skagit & Stilly.

Cool. Thanks CP. I'm going to give it a try this weekend.

Anyone jigging in the salt?

I'm heading out solo for some water time on Sunday and will drag gear for a bit but was also thinking of doing a little drift and jig action. I've had decent luck before heading a little closer to shore....maybe off Humpy Hollow and working a buzz bomb up and down. I like to find a spot a bit away from the flotilla and just drift along. Carl and his boy will be coming out late morning and thinking a little jigging might mix up the trolling action.

Thoughts?

I'll give it a go and report. I've solo fished with a single down rigger out and been fine in the past. Get everything ready and it isn't to bad. Worst case is the boats nearby see me jumping around turning off motors and looking for a net with a bent rod in one hand....

Agreed. I've got a new net that is perfect for smaller fish....I bought it for koke fishing but it would handle a pink just fine. It has a long handle so reaching out further is helpfull.
Title: Re: Humpy Report Thread: 2015

I had an old net handle around which turns out fit perfectly over my existing handle, moved the springy push button to the new handle and now have a great extendable net.

More limits on pinks off Eagle Point with a couple of kings and some sockey thrown in to keep it interesting.  Fishing was a bit slower after the weekend pounding by the purse seiners.

Fished there today & picked up two pinks for the smoker.  Fishing was a little slower, since it was dark and choppy.  Played a nice coho that got loose right before the boat.  Lost a few other pinks.  Not too many other boats netting fish, but they were getting a few.  Just a slow day, I guess.

Page 98 of the fishing regs has colored pics of the different species. Once you know what you are fishing for....silvers or humpies etc....you will be able to know what to look for. Keep the regs handy, use them as a reference, and just use good judgement. Not that hard at all really.

Crabbing has been phenomenal this season and still going strong in my favorite hole. Been getting loads of the bar crab and having to throw back limit after limit after filling limits on 4 pot drop we mostly end up rail dumping 2 pots every time, don't even know why I'm hauling extra pots around  anyway nice catch's everybody keep'm coming

I'll keep that in mind. We ususally fish off to the side and a I end up letting my lure drop add letting my 4yo reel in bullhead and sand dabs. But I think he could actually handle some humpy fishing. He turns 5 in 2 weeks, time for a new rod I think. Superman can only take him so far...

I took the family to the beach at Mukilteo on Monday afternoon and did a little shore fishing. I was there at the wrong time and tide, but still threw out a few times. I had fun taking the kids out for the afternoon. A couple guys that came in on the boats had some luck with humps and crabs.

Might be the wrong place to ask, but how are you guys setting up for shore fishing for humpies I can't fit my entire family in the boat, so I might be stuck on the shore more frequently to keep my wife happy.  :dunno: I will use the search function when I am home, but just in case anyone has a quick answer, that would be greatly appreciated. From the sounds of it, a pink buzz bomb might be the way to go, but what size?

Is that to make my wife happy or catch fish? Hahaha I kid I kid.

I have a couple of pink buzz bombs and they are 3 oz. Seems too heavy to me. Should I consider 2 oz?

Edit: I checked my buzzbombs, I have 2", 2.5", and 3" in pinks. I also have pink hoochies and pink jigs, and they all say pink salmon or humpy on them. Sorry, I should have paid attention. I am normally in a boat so the shore fishing will be new to me. Thanks for the info!

Any of you guys out there by the edmonds ferry? Plenty of boats on the edmonds side. Everytime I go up topside I see the boats fishing and I start wishing I was not at work.

Fished shipwreck on Thursday and Friday. 8 fish in the box each day with at least 10 unintentional releases at the boat each day. Fishing is good from daylight til an hour after tide change and then it just goes dead.

pick a hot spot and have fun. The mouth of a river system might be the best option from shore. Bright fish, natural funnel, hit 'em where they stack. Good luck.

Fished Browns point this morning from boat and watched the guys on shore limit and leave wIle we got nothing.

Hit up Picnic Point this morning.  Lot of fishermen, not a lot of fish. Decided to swing by Edmonds pier before I went home as well. Just to check out the pier action, and didn't fish. Nothing new to report there. Lots of people, no fish. Saw a guy fishing yelling at a guy trying to drop a crab pot on the south end of the pier. Also saw someone yelling at someone else about buzzbombs and how they weren't supposed to use them on the pier and they were illegal. I even peeked and saw his buzzbomb only had one hook. Poor guy.

I don't fish the pier, but I do enjoy the entertainment at times.  I've decided to get back into the boat scene at this point. Finally have my wife back on board :)

Saw a ton of boats out this morning, but it looked slow out there too. Anybody have a good morning off picnic point or shipwreck?

Really slow today on pinks around Orcas and Cypress.   :(

Interesting...we fished outside SJI yesterday and they were still super thick.  No orcas or seiners yesterday, so that may have helped.  Caught and released for a long time trying to find a different species but to no avail.  Green mini squid was best, although we caught them on everything from whole herring to a five inch cop car spoon.

Fished out of shilshole for about 90 minutes mid-morning today, and my kid skunked me 4 to 0, including a coho.  All on the green mini squid.  I tried everything else, but it was that mini squid they really wanted.

We went 3 for 7 or 8 along with a dogfish.  Fished maybe 7:30 to 10:00 and it was fairly constant, 95 feet was magic.  Saw one absolutely gigantic school on the chart along with a couple other good sized ones between Muk and shipwreck.

We pulled a mess of crab along with a drifting pot that the owner way happy to have back.

Probably the best weather/fun day in quite some time.

Coach and I had 4 pinks with a bunch of long line jumpers, a dogfish and a limit of crab each.   Got to go get 13 stitches later when I decided the cut on my leg from the seat boxes in the boat while netting a fish was deeper than it first appeared.

Was out on Sunday in 8-2, 9 Ran into a forum member at the launch.
Hit it early to drop pots and try a different piece of water in 8-2, the tide was almost all out when we started fishing so the plan was to troll the new to us area south till the tide changed and then hit some spots we know if needed.

The early bite was slow (atleast around us), no nets flying and the people i checked with via text seemed to be having the same luck in other spots.

Boated the first fish at 6:53, then got a text from the forum member i saw at the launch, he just had a downrigger cable break on the way up, bummer.... let him know we had repair stuff on board and an extra ball he could borrow if he needed. Gave him or coordinates and he came up to meet us and get the stuff he needed. (great thing about this site and meeting people thru out the years).
He fished next to us on the way down, saw his broinlaw hookup and get it in the boat.

We got down to the area we wanted to be in with the incoming tide and it played out like this:
8:54 1st double, both in the boat
9:00 lost one at the boat
9:03 2nd double, both in the boat
9:13 3rd double, both in the boat
9:27 8th fish in the boat
A limit in the boat in 30mins (7) + the one from earlier, we could of kept fishing and catching if we had more people...the 10yo boy was too tired to go after 2 days of football combine...he woke up but was a zombie, he was bummed when i got home... :chuckle:

Crab sucked, think someone pulled our pots as we got only had a few crab in each pot, one pot only had 1 crab in it  >:(...we usually do great and have every other time this year in the same spot we use every year...

Will be back out this coming weekend, wave hello... :hello:

We fished 8-2 yesterday with my brother and 5 year old nephew from New Jersey. Ended up with 3 pinks in the boat with 4-5 LDR's and then we pulled 5 limits of crab in 7 pots. The kid managed 2 of the 3 fish himself. Dumped the 8th plugged pot back. Insane crabbing. We ate so much crab last night, it almost got ugly.

I would assume quite awhile given the lack of rain to pull them up and the long range forecast shows very little rain expected for the rest of the month.
The fish we are getting now are just the early migrators, all a bit smaller than the later run fish and even the early guys are a bit late, more fish will be coming in and if we still don't have any real rain they will stack for awhile and this could be a fun fishery for another month.....or it will rain buckets and they will all head to the rivers....

You are correct CP, ALL of the fish are in that one spot. If you don't fish that exact area, you will not catch any fish.

Fishing should be good for the next 2 months. Once the pinks start to wind down the silvers will take over until mid Oct. Nov.1, kings will be legal to keep again unless the tribes "negotiate" more quota for themselves.

Wow, slow day.

On Sunday, we had a guy run by my starboard side at full throttle that just about swamped us.  I would guess no further than 15 feet, maybe 10.  I could have easily tossed him a sandwich he was that close.

I don't mind crowds at all, it is just the few DBs that make life interesting.  My kids have a full list of stuff they are permanently forbid from doing.

Give people as much room as you can, run on the outside of the crowds, troll the right way or at least in a predictable manner, give the guy fighting fish room and try not to pass more than 20 boats while going through the no wake zone.

silver bite was hot this morning........if you want to increase landed fish quit pinching the barbs on your lures and cut them off and install a true barbless hook, specifically one with a offset and and three sided point.  look at the eagle claw offering, the trokar octopus style is what I like but there are others out there....big difference in fish brought to net

One thing I will never understand is why folks don't have the courtesy to run outside the crowds. Why run wide open right through the middle of where everyone's trolling. Seems like the nice thing to do given everyone is there for pretty much the same reason.

I agree with that....however.....every humpy year it gets so thick with boats that by the last two/three weekends there is simply no choice. At that point I say to heck with it and pick the best line I can and run it. On the flip side, I don't get worked up with a boat goes by on plane and there is only 40 yards between he and I because on the other side of him is another boat and another. Just part of the chaos during humpy season. Now, give it a few weeks when there are not 2000 boats on the water and I will go out of my way to not buzz anyone.

Now, give it a few weeks when there are not 2000 boats on the water and I will go out of my way to not buzz anyone.

gotta love humpy mania

Dont swamp the little guy, the fear is real. :yike:

Anybody have a guess as to how long they will hold at Shipwreck?

One year I caught a humpy on Halloween day at the shipwreck.  He wasn’t in the best shape but he was still alive enough to chase down my lure.

But usually the numbers of pinks around Possession Sound declines rapidly after Labor Day even without significant rain.  A good sustained downpour in Sept. and they can disappear overnight.

By September the river is loaded with humpies whether it rains or not.

Are you guys picking up silvers on traditional silver gear or are they biting the pink stuff?  I had what I believe was a pretty good sized king on last week but it popped off before we could see it, bit on pink gear.

My kid has caught three coho in the last couple weeks, but we are always using traditional coho/king gear.  The pinks bite green and white just fine.

Just got back from the Shipwreck.  The good news is that I took my wife and 6 year old and we got 2 pinks.  These are the first fish I have caught with my downrigger.  First fish I have ever caught on a downrigger.  The strange news was that one did not come off the clip so who knows how long I was dragging it around.  Obviously I am still working out the kinks.  :chuckle: The other fish I caught as my gear was dropping down.  A seal took a bite out of one.  We got back to the ramp right as the thunder was starting-up.  My fishfinder was doing bad things so for much of the morning I was guessing on depth with intermittent help from the finder.  I call it a successful trip since I got the downrigger to produce for the first time.

Doc....This year I swear the humpies have never bit "lighter". I've been barely putting the line in the clip and have not had any really pop it. Just watch for irregular action on the rod....that slight dip could be fish on. Nice job getting a few in the boat.

Pinks rarely pull the line from the clip.  The take is usually a tell-tale twitching of the rod tip and if you aren’t paying attention or your line isn’t tight you miss the take and the fish comes and goes without being noticed.

Now...in my pick....for pinks I've got to much angle...I was trolling a little fast to try and combat wind.

I like to troll between 1 and 1.5 and just have the slightest angle to the dangle.

Doc....I like to run a little futher back when I fish shallow. Now, last weekend, while steering, I saw fish swim right past the boat. I think the numbers they run in makes up for them being boat shy. I've seen schools running along the surface then had GoPro footage of them only 20 feet down running in mass.

Don't go crazy with that.....the more boats out there the tighter you need to run and pay attention. Getting your gear hung up is not fun and I'm telling you....combat trolling is the name of the game the couple of weeks. Now....honing your teqnique will pay off when the silvers come in. Kick up the speed, crank down the rod, fish along the rips and look for birds and hang on. Silvers will clear it from the clip and then bury the rod tip in the water. Lots of fun.

I put the line in the middle of the clip and I set it at the highest setting.  It doesn’t have to pop – grab the rod, reel down and gently pull it from the clip when a fish hits.

The leader from the downrigger ball/line to the clip should be at least as long as the boom – that helps give the rod movement when a picky fish taps the lure.

Title: Re: Humpy Report Thread: 2015

I don't think they are particularly boat shy unless you're fishing in the top 30 feet or so.  I drop further back when I'm fishing at 20-30' on the rigger.  Also, besides adding to the odds of tangles with other boats, putting your flasher farther back from the ball makes the bite appear that much lighter by the time it gets to your rod tip, and it also provides that much more slack in the line before you can get tight after release.  I think my standard distance is probably 15' or so.

As others have noted, I think we've only had one or two actual releases with the pinks over the course of about 50 fish.  We caught a coho smaller than most pinks on Sunday, and the bite and release (and fight) were noticeably more violent.

In the morning/predawn i run the line about 15-20ft off the clip when only down about 20-25ft and we usually get a fish or two, then as we go deeper i shorten it up to around 8-10ft.

I run it shallow in the clip and like h2o wind it down almost to popping off, do not alwasy get releases but sometimes do, i was just thinking if one comes off easier that the other as one rod has braided line the other mono, i will have to pay attention.

If you have more than two people in the boat fishing we will run a 6ft6 spinning rod out the back of the boat with a 1-2oz banana weight, 4-5ft leader to a small flasher then 16-20in of leader to a hoochie, ace high fly or coyote type spoon then long line it out, if the fish are biting good it can be fun, especially for the kids (ok even us big kids try to grab it first  :chuckle:)

I run 50' of 30# mono top shot that gets clipped into the Scotty release set on heavy as far back as it will go.  Pretty much doesn't release for fish under 10# and even a king has a challenge popping it off.  I run 6' line on the release.  I do this because:

1.  Nothing sucks more than popping the line off when you are tightening it in the rod holder and you have a 15# cannonball 100+ feet down.
2.  The 6' release line and heavy release tend to hook the fish as they thrash on it better than when it pops easily.  I lose way less fish.  I yank it loose and then crank right onto the fish.
3.  Looking at a thrashing tight line is much cooler than a slack rod & wondering if the fish is still there.

Figure I can get two in them with a smaller size. Also, you gotta try to improve on humpies so it pays off on silvers and black mouth.

I experimented with hooks last humpy season after I lost 8 straight one morning.  I settled on the Gami finesse wide gaps and haven't looked back.  They are awesome.  They are thinner with a slight inward angle, and I get great penetration with them.  You might give them a shot if you're losing a bunch.

Last time we went out, we hooked into 15 of them, and landed 13.

I'm using cheap eagle claws with pinched barbs.

I was at somewhere around 55 feet deep.

Flasher was 10-15 feet behind the ball.

I was trolling at 2.5-3 km per hour. (dont know how to convert my fish finder to mph)

2 of the 3 fisherman had never even used a downrigger before.

Guess I'm just good at netting  :chuckle:

On a more serious note, could you guys please post links to some of these good hooks you are using? I would like to try them.

Some days most seem to stick and other days not so much. I do prefer to use the break-away flashers by Q-cove and Gibbs though as they seem to pull loose less often than the fixed flashers.

I put out about 15' on the downrigger and bury the line.  My clips are old though and I use braid.  About 2 of 3 pinks need to be popped loose from the clip.  I've had best luck this year with coho killers.

When possible, I run a third line with a dive plane and a smaller flasher with mini pink hoochie off the middle about 45 to 55 feet out.  Sometimes this one gets the majority of the fish, even got a nice sockeye this year on it.

VMC perma steel is my favorite hook.  3/0 or 4/0

If I get anal about losing pinks I'll go to a round point like a Gamakatsu barbless.  They make a smaller hole so theoretically it stays in better.   But so far this season I've only lost a couple of pinks.

Everyone has their own preferences, but here’s what I’ve learned of the years:

Barbless hooks come out if there is no pressure on them, especially when they aren’t in very deep to start with.

I like the clip tight so that if a 15Lb Coho slams the lure at mach 1 the hooks are driven in deep before the line pops. The bend in the rod with a tight line helps take the slack out when it releases.  I also use about a 50ft mono leader to my braid main line.  The mono holds in the clip better and provides some stretch that is a bit more forgiving than just braid.

I use these Scotty releases.  I cut off the line that comes on them and replace it with 5-6 feet of weedwacker line.  I have a 4 foot boom and the extra length allows me to bring the clip over the gunwale so I’m not hanging over the side to hookup.   It also gives the rod more movement when shakers, dogfish or humpies or picking at the lure (as I’ve posted before).

These releases have two settings – the light setting is useless for salmon fishing IMHO.

For Coho and Kings I keep the distance from the clip to the lure fairly short – no more than 6 feet often about 2.  This gives the flasher a tighter spin and helps set the hooks deep when a fish hits.  For pinks this isn’t so important and I drop back further.

Sharp hooks work better than dull ones.  I like to sharpen a knife like edge to the hook point when fishing for Coho and kings, helps to cut into the bone and hard flesh.  But for humpies that just rips big holes in their soft flesh.  What actually works best for pinks is an old rusty hook with a sharp point.  The rust helps it stay in.  But the cheap hooks that come with the Walmart humpy rigs work just fine too but I'd never use them for Coho or Kings.

Anyone catching in the Snohomish yet?

Also, anyone ever run up river a bit, anchor up, and plunk for them. Thought that might be kind of neat on an incoming tide to motor up and toss anchor. Throw out some gear like maybe a corkie/spin glow tipped with a sandshrimp or something. Do some casting for rollers?

Yes but not many.  And, here's a hint, rusty hooks with a sharp point always work better when barbless is required.  There's a line between rusty and too rusty.

Reports from a buddy saying fish are scattered and he's only caught 3 so far. Plunking from the boat works extremely well, but if fishing the river just use pink jigs right over the side. Slaughtered them last year like that. Filled two catch cards for the first time.

Plunking works great more so than trolling actually.
Anchor close to shore near a steep bank and get your rig on the bottom where the floor of the river meets the edge of the bank the fish really stack thick and run these edges of the river. Spin-n-glows work great with sandshrimp or even with yarn and shrimp oil. This method is very effective on the coho also and will put quick limits in your boat rather than trolling. Flame tiger with white wings is the spin-n-glow that slays them, use red rather than pink

Sunday was lights out, left the house a bit after 6, dropped pots and was probably fishing about 7:15ish.  First bite less than 10 minutes in and then more doubles than singles up until we quit.  Caught fish all the way from Muk until after shipwreck when we threw in the towel.  Fishing was better up north, but that was likely due to where we were in the tide cycle as opposed to the geographic position.  Never saw much on the fishfinder, but they were certainly there.

Released a beauty 15-18 pound chinook and also gave a ton of pinks a second chance at life.  Every fish we boated was a larger than average buck, something I've never seen before.

Started at 55' and ended at 95 & 105 with the standard pink gear trolling as slow as I could while keeping direction (2 mph max, 1.5 worked better).  Guys went by me trolling mach 5 that were either targeting coho or being clueless.

I wanted to target coho, but never had time to rig up for those as I was either handing a rod, netting a fish or bleeding and gutting a fish pretty much the whole time.

Crabbing certainly dropping off, 5 keepers in 3 pots with about 7 or 10 additional keeper sized soft shells thrown back.

I second the lights out fishing yesterday. 4 pots in the water at day light South of the shipwreck then lines down by 7. We ran full sized flashers and Coho Killers on both rods. Hit a double almost immediately then things slowed a bit. We caught probably 15 fish and long line released about 15 more. 1 nice silver was lost when it flopped up on my extended transom and tangled under the motor controls and broke off. I also did some jigging over a huge school and caught a couple. We put 7 pinks in the cooler and then pulled our pots. Had a few softies that we released, but took home 8 dungies. Very nice day on the water.

Had a nice fun day ourselves on Saturday. Didn't get after to hard...slept in, had a nice breakfast. Headed out and dropped 4 pots of Hat which gave up 17 keepers, culled one 7 inch soft and one just over legal. So four pots, one soak while fishing, 15 keepers. I'll take it.

Now, the fun part. We only fished for a few hours and it was very slow by us. Got one plus a bonus fish then were starting to head north to go pull pots. Off the side of the boat is a flasher kinda floating in the grass that was along a bit of a rip. We motor towards it to grab it and it swims away. Yep, the darn flasher was evading us. We try again and it dives this time. After we try netting it and being unable we make a vow then and there that we will not rest until we have captured this flasher. Since the flasher appears a bit tired I decide to give it some space and "rush it' We loop around, I gun it, and back off just as we come along side. One of my buddies, young Lucas, made the grab and brought aboard our new flasher, 10 feet of main line, and a short leader attached to a nice bright humpy.

Now, we snap a pic, give each other some high fives and get underway. Well wouldn't you know it but the cruiser just in front of me was backing down on another fish/flasher combo! They got an all red one with a nice humpy. My guess is that somebody doubled up and the lines crossed and cut both lines.

So, missing a flasher and a fish?

That's funny H2o, I'm surprised it stayed at the surface.  I had one break off on the coast once, chased it for about 15 minutes trying to snag the line between the fish and the flasher with a rockfish jig but no luck before it dove to its doom.

It must have been swimming for awhile.....it woul dive down but we could follow the flasher only a few feet underwater.

That's awesome.  Crazy that there were two next to each other like that.

I've rescued a couple of my own flashers that way.  My thinking is that the fish head to the surface where there is less water pressure to reduce the drag from the flasher.

Last night, from 6:15-8:15 hooked 3 pinks, landed one due to netting challenges.  Picked up 10 legal hardshell crab on the way back.  It was a beautiful night out there.

I did lose a clip and break a deep 6 diver... so I'm not sure that outweighs the value of our 1 humpy.

North of shipwreck.

Are you guys noticing your fish finders going on the blitz near shipwreck.  I would be trolling and then be reading 2 feet.  Might be sitting on bait or all the floating eel grass.  Wasn't sure other than it not working there.

I think the FF issue is due to all the other sonars on the water. Mine was acting up on Sunday. It was weird though, it only acted up when I went against the tide. I have seen this before on real busy days like during salmon derbies. The more boats the more interference.

S4S is going to be a blast. How many of you are doing overnight mooring? We should meet up for a Hunt Wa get together.

I just turn mine off when fishing there.  Usually too much interference from other boats, or suspended weeds - or ??  - Don't need it anyway.

I've hooked up anywhere from grabbing a flasher on the surface, to running gear at 25 and in the past I've seen and hooked up with schools as deep as 150.0

On average I like to run lines betwen 45 and 65.

Not overnight mooring for me...pretty easy run to the launch from home.

I hit 55 at about 7 am when we hit the water and then when that stops working I drop to 75 and usually end up at 95 by 10 am.  I watch the fishfinder to see where I am consistently marking fish and adjust to that.

Looking at other posts, the summary is put your stuff in the water and you will likely catch fish.

This happened to me and I thought for sure it was my fishfinder.  I was coming up with all sorts of explanations.  Maybe there is sub under there and they don't like being seen.  :chuckle:  Seriously, I would go along fine and then it would read 2 ft deep.  I was reaching back and fiddling with the transducer but nothing helped.  I'm sort of relieved to hear that I'm not the only one with the problem.

My smoker has a backlog, so we decided to try canning a few.   :chuckle:

1/2t salt
1 t brown suger
1/4 t liquid smoke
1 Pint of pink salmon

Should be nice to pull out a jar this winter.

Hit Meadow Point and Westpoint last night and it was very slow. Handful of bites that didn't stick, a couple shakers, and lost a nice coho at the surface. Marking tons of fish in at about 40 and 120 but had a tough time getting them to cooperate.

Fish checker said the coho were pretty hot in the morning but things tapered off later in the day.

Wind and current picked up into some pretty nasty wind waves towards dusk. We were hitting bounced around and complaining about in a 17 foot arima and thinking about head in until we saw two guys and a girl packed into a little flat bottom duck boat taking water over the bow pretty much every wave. I assumed they were dead in the water and needed help until we cruised by and two of them smiled and waved as the third bailed out water with empty beer cans. They had a couple small but bright pinks--from right near the green can in front of golden gardens. To be young again...

We also saw a commercial boat out at meadow point last night but he didn't have nets in the water when we were near him. Almost seemed like he was watching to see if the sport fisherman were catching before he decided to fish.

Anyone beach fishing the south sound still?  Wondering if it's worth it or (gulp) joining the masses on the Puyallup?

The biggest delay for us taking out was the fish checker and the crab guy measuring what we got.

Leader was longer than 16" but I would have to go measure.  Maybe around 20".

Was a fun morning on the water, morning ride out was like glass.
Tried a new area for crab and after dropping pots we fished from there, hit the first fish after about 2 minutes of putting gear down (kinda funny as i put gear down my fishing partner turned on the satellite radio and just then wham fish on and he goes "ok they like CHEAP TRICK this morning" made me bust up laughing). :chuckle:

Boated a few, lost a few then tuned in to a good school and stuck with them, 2 limits in 2hrs
Pulled pots after a 2.5hr soak, one pot the crabs got the bait box open  :bash:, but between the other pots we managed 8 dungies and 3 rocks....

Come on next weekend, i hopes it is just as hot for S4S, which i think it will be..

How deep water were you fishing and what depth?  I tried for some silvers but could only scratch up a million pinks.  I did get the first triple on my current boat though and the third rod was a lead rod with a fish flash.  Smoker is going today and the canner was working OT yesterday.

we were in 150 to 200 ft of water  running downriggers at 100 to 125 or whatever depth we were marking fish at, one of the reasons I am sure we were having king hookups, also a couple of dog fish. but were trying to get below the early morning pinks.....the silvers seem to be suspended at all levels in the am, I have heard of them caught from the surface to 200 ft this weekend

I've been cooking salmon whole on the Traeger lately and love it!  I cut some slices in the side down to the bone.  Stuff some lemon slices, fresh dill, and butter in the body and slices, then salt/pepper the whole thing.  Turns out really tasty!

Been limiting every day,on flasher and coho killer white,36 or 42 in leader.Doesent seem to make much difference. I've stayed at 35-50 ft sometimes 95..The reason is that Ive targeted the sightings. THree in the boat 2 much fun..

I smoked up 10 more the other day. I'm done keeping humpies for the season. It's been a good one and I will still enjoy catching, I'll just be doing more releasing. I haven't kept count but I probably have smoked up 40ish. A lot have been shared at work and with friends. I've also made up 15- 1 1/2 pint containers of salmon dip which is in the freezer along with 5 containers of crab/shrimp dip. We are ready for the holiday get together's this year. Now I just need to get some silvers in the freezer. Happy fishing everyone, get out and enjoy this fantastic pink run!

Thinking of hitting the San Juan’s this long weekend for pinks and kings.

What’s the good word?  Are people still picking up fish in MA7?

My gut was to hit west side of San Juan Island, probably at the north end by Henry Island one day and maybe around cypress for another, but would love to hear from people with poles in the water.

Any good reports?

Saw 6 people on West Beach with no pinks and a pile of people on North Beach with two boats out front.  Saw several people carrying bags of fish back to their rigs.  Didn't hang out and chat as it was dumping out.

Thanks guys. I was hoping to avoid the chaos that can be deception pass, but if there are fish there I might venture that way.

I would really like to stay in the San Juans, but it seems by the creel reports and such that more fish are being caught down south.

So many choices...

I will let you know how I do.

The boat was a 17 footer, with four guys on board.  When the motor konked out it was gusting to 59 knots by Camano State Park.

Targeted silvers today around shipwreck.

I took out the user "stickerbush" on here. When he wasn't breaking gear, he was slaying fish.

Anyways, hot action at around 7AM. Got a double hook up on silvers. Got 3 more throughout the morning and 2 humpers to add to the cooler.

We were running them purple haze hootchies. Purple haze is all the craze.

That's nothing to cough at.  Most of the pinks I was getting were under 4.  We got one 3 lb. coho & was hoping some bigger ones would show up.  Maybe in the next couple days I can get back down there.  Nice haul.
