I have a muzzy cow tag for Umtanem I am excited for this hunt. Just wondering how many have been successful on this hunt. I am going to be putting the miles on and just going to be having a great time doing it. If you were successful post a pic and maybe a story with it would be awesome.

There are elk, but if no weather comes it will be much harder to find elk.
-
Hunted that unit 5 years. Back when they only gave out 250 cow tags. You had a good chance. We hunted the North end around the 516. In past years it has been a struggle. They went up to 400 cow tags and that is way too many.
Two years ago they started logging around the north end. Whiched changed everything.
Last summer they wrapped up.
In this kind of weather most the elk are near the water. I never saw it as a unit which held elk. More of a transition zone.
We hunted out of ground blinds and took 3 cows and a spike in 5 years.
Last year we had two cow tag in camp. with 12 guys. Saw five elk after the season opened. We camped there and hunted the entire season.
This year we are moving to a unit with 15 cow tags. We have one tag in our group.
But at least we might see some elk. Last year other than two cows come running by I did even see a fresh track.
One of my friends drew a tag this year in that unit.
-
I have that tag also...hoping for some good luck!

I saw 3 spikes and a few cows in that unit yesterday. On private land though.
-
saw a herd of about 15 cows when i was in there about a month ago and going back to check a camera I have in there this weekend. Won't be hunting it but a buddy has one of the cow tags so I am trying to help him out.
-
It can be a fun hunt.
PM sent.

I had the muzzy tag about five years ago when I was young and dumb. I thought I would have my pick of a cow above the road. I didn't hunt hard til the last weekend after not seeing an elk... The last two days I walked my butt off and saw a lot of elk. Finally got a shot at 50 yards broadside and had a misfire. Didn't fill my tag.
Last year I drew a modern cow tag and walked my butt off from day one got right into the elk but the elk were being pushed hard and choose not to take the shot and the rest of the season was to foggy to hunt so I hunted spikes elsewhere.
The point is, if you put some miles on and try and get away from all the roads you will see elk. If you think you are going to drive around and find some you will not see much.

Adam gave you the best advice so far.
Yeah, you can find elk just about anywhere in the timber right now, but come the first weekend of October, they are all where I am at. They hide in tiny draws where year round springs are near by.
-
Awesome thanks for the information and I plan on forsure doing some walking..
-
Our camp has hunted there a few years with mixed results.
Be prepared for extremely dusty conditions. Camp as far away from a road as possible. First time there we setup to close to a road and every time a truck passed we would get dust clouded out.
Also, be prepared to deal with ton's of road hunters on ATV's.

My best friend has been hunting that unit during the ML season for the last 15 years. Gets his elk every year, whether he gets drawn for a cow tag or not. Hikes less than 200 yards off the road and sits. Accesses the unit off of 410 is all I'm sure he'd be pleased to hear I told you all.
-
Iused to alternate between ml and archery. I drew the cow tag 3 times in that unit. Filled all three times. Last time was 5 years ago.
Tough unit to hunt and takes a lot of patience but there are quite a few elk in there. Find some the bigger steeper canyons, water, brush and escape routes before season and be prepared to sit for long periods of time. The past few years I think more elk have moved out of this unit due to lack of rainfall and snowpack.
Scout through Sept. into Oct .Remember fire season is far from being over
Good luck.

Anyone close that knows if this is closed right now.. And thoughts about it for muzzy now with fires and everything getting shut down
-
It's open. There aren't any fires anywhere near there.
-
ok perfect I just wanted to make sure.. Thanks bobcat Hoping they will get some rain over there soon

It is very dry up there and will be for a while. Find the water and the thicker areas and you should be fine. I had a camera a few hundred yards from a watering hole and I had more cows then I could count coming in all day long. Good luck
-
Thanks it doesn't start til oct 3rd so i still have time for rain to hopefully come in and help out alittle.

I doubt there will be enough rain between now and then to make much of a difference but you never know with the crazy weather we have had. If you have been scouting, or plan to do some, try to locate some escape routes and set up on those. Once hunters start pushing them around they will be there

Wdfw and dnr land won't close, usfs might depending on how much precip this weekend.
-
I hope the eastside gets some good rain this weekend really the whole state needs some good rain.. Hoping the weather people are right.
-
I hope your rig has quality tires and good suspension. The roads in Umtanum are miserable! Among the worst in the state IMO. I have taken a spike and a cow in there in the last 5 years. If you find elk prior to opening day make sure you are the first one there on opening morning. You will have company. It's no thing for guys to park next to your rig and walk right in on top of you. Good luck, have fun!
-
Think for info.. And ya I plan on been there and getting off the road and putting some miles on.
-
Who is ready we only have two days left!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-

Can you run quads on the roads out of bbq flats? Quads that aren't street legal? Is it national forest there?
-
BBQ flats is a DNR section.
Most of the state land in that area is WDFW and DNR.
