I just found out that my name was drawn for the BT raffle-- Hubby had bought me tickets for our anniversary ( 32 years! Thanks Justyhnter! I can't believe it's been so long and to still like each other!)
Anyway I have been archery hunting with Hubby for 4 years and have yet to get a deer. Between buck fever, bad timing, or whatever reason I haven't been able to get a deer yet :( but have had a lot of fun just being out there.
We usually hunt White River Hancock, but with recent changes we decided to get the Kapowsin permit this year. Now with the drought and woods being closed, I've been pretty depressed and
pessimistic about the upcoming season... but now this changes things a bit.
The season is from Sept 1 through Dec 31, any unit that has a Blacktail season would be open to me. I'm not sure if I could use my rifle or bow... but I do have a 243 as well as my bow. I will have to get that clarified.
I am asking for help ...
If you had that ticket where would YOU be on what date?
I really want to seal the deal this year-- a nice gnarly buck would be awesome, but that might be asking too much!
I am super super stoked!! beyond words
thank you in advance! Susie

Congrats on the tag. The last week of October/first week of November, anywhere in the woods where you find does, there will be bucks around.
-
I believe you can use a rifle during the entire time that your raffle tag is valid.
I guess since you have the Kapowsin access permit, you may as well hunt there. I'd concentrate on the first two weeks of November. The first week of September could be good as well.
I'll send you a PM with another option if you want to try a different area.

Not bad advice at all here.
Where are you located Susie?

The only problem with this is she won't be allowed in kapowsin during rifle elk season. The good news is that doesn't start until November 7th. I would definitely be in there the first week of November. There are some mashers in there. Congratulations!
-
When I get home I'll post up some pictures of kapowsin bucks for you.

Kapowsin , congrats!

West Klickitat would be my choice.
-
I would go HIGH but that is just me.

do some research.. depends on what you are after... there are a couple counties that keep coming up for blacktail ....
-
you can use any weapon and hunt every day from Sept 1 through Dec 31 . you must wear hunter orange if you gun hunt or hunt any season that's open to guns . you can hunt during elk season . do it justice and hold out till the middle of December if need be. I'd go high in Sept above tree line if you can . if your in shape id start on the crest trail and look west !

with your quest, have alternatives for paper company land closures with the dry weather too...National forest/ DNR will remain available with rules and restrictions... also for me, later is better, catch the big boys in the rut when no one else is hunting! If you are after a monster, trail cams scouting and PATIENCE until you see that one deer.. don't just take a reasonable buck.. you have the whole fall to take.. make it count@!

High hunt in September is a great way to be more selective which you'd better be with that tag :yike:
-
Gray faced gnarly old dude ! of course with massive heavy horns ...... settle on dec 31st.
-
Awesome replies here!
Put in for some vacation time around the rut cannot wait-- Hubby is a great caller so many options I'm a little flabbergasted!
Keep it comin! thanks!

SHHHH ! there are no deer there....

Road hunt I-5
-
Lewis County between Vanson Peak and Strawberry mountain. Get as far in from the roads as you can. Tough spot to hunt, but there are some really nice blacktails in the windfalls and thick brush. The thicker the better. It is really good if there is some snow in there for the late hunt, but it's work.
-
My three options would be go high early in September, find something west of the crest, heck you might even catch a big mule deer west of the boundary this time of year. That early November period in the heart of blacktail country, or late in the Klickitat area. What a great problem to have. Congrats on the draw.

If it were me west of the PCT sept 1 through whenever. High country blacktail in velvet with a rifle.
Good luck!

Road hunt I-5
I was thinking the main drag of Ocean shores...
-
I'd hunt Snohomish, Skagit and Whatcom counties all the way through November and December if needed. Use September and October for scouting or other hunts. Don't be surprised if you don't see much before November. Buy some good rain gear and plan to use the heck out of it. Don't worry about being up high later in the season, but for a early benchleg it would be a good plan. Have your husband hold your bullets, seriously. Lots of patients and a few really tough calls should be expected. Hunt extra hard in the wind and rain and stay positive if the fog fouls you up. Pray for snow! Good luck.
-
here are some bucks from kapowsin. With your tag these are probably all last day shooters but there are bigger in there.
-
a few more.
-
Last day shooters??? That 4x4 and the heavy buck are way above average :mgun:
-
Thanks Grundy!! Awesome pics!
tough tough call here-- so much fun!
we were seriously discussing West Klickitat and now you've gone and posted those pics!
-
Congrats on the draw!
Nice pics Grundy, great buck.
-
Lots of good advice. Personally I wouldn't even step into the woods with intent to kill something until The last week of October. You can hunt September and October every year, you can ONLY hunt the first two weeks of November if you have that tag.
I would also hunt somewhere where you can shoot a true Blacktail. West Klick bucks have a lot of Muley in them and it's VERY difficult to kill a mature true Blacktail buck.
Best of luck you better keep this post updated!!!
-
:yeah: good luck with this tag
-
Sept one I may be standing on pace crest trail north of hWY 20.
-
Great advice/tips so far-keep em coming!
Thanks!
-
Guess I would make up my mind on a mountian, valley or coastal blacktail. Next I would scout with trail cameras hard and hunt Oct. 28-Nov. 20 everyday. Personally i would hunt west of the puget sound from those dates and hold for 150" and drop to 125" after the 15th of November.
Sundance I tried to Pm you but your inbox is full

For the right amount of $$ I will fix you breakfast with your choice of omelette, fresh blackberry scones, hand squeezed OJ, and gourmet coffee of your choice and while you eat you can figure out which one of these two you would like to take while I do the dishes.

Good luck and congrats on a great opportunity

Thank you all for the congrats!

I'm going to jack my wife's thread . We have it down to 3 areas that we are going to focus on and she has decided to hunt for true Blacktail .We are taking the first 2 weeks of Nov. We know were there are couple older big bucks in the White River , ones regressing , he was a massive 2x3 with eye guards last year and a good 5x5 that was bedded in front of my wife at 50 yards last year but she was unable to get a shot . This is not our first chose because I don't know if they made it through the tribal season . We have found some outstanding rubs from last year in Kapowsin , 8-10in. trees all tore up . Earlier this year on one of our trail cams we had 7 different bucks on one camera in a 2 week soak . None would be shooters for this tag but there are lots of does and the area looks promising plus we have cameras up there that we can't get to until they open the woods so they are in for a good long soak . Should be interesting , we'll wait and see . We are also looking to hunt areas around Kitsap . I had an archery quality tag in there a couple years ago and found some areas that look promising . I think this week end we are going to head up that way and do a bit of scouting . Here's my dilemma , I've seen big bucks but have never been a trophy hunter so I have no idea how to judge a shooter , beings I'm the spotter can you give me an idea how to field judge a true trophy worthy of this tag ? How far above the ears and how far out from the head ? I've started to study images on Google but any help will be appreciated.
Thanks , Dave

Threadkill strikes again! maybe start your own thread Dave? Might get more responses :)
-
Dave, you know you shouldn't be steppin on Susies toes :chuckle: Big blackies come in many shapes and sizes. I personally would want to get a true 5x5 an inch or 2 beyond his ears with equal height. Any 3 pt frame wider than the ears and equal height is pushing B&C book min. (130")
What makes a trophy can only be defined by the individual hunter, not inches.
Like others have said, hunt the rut time away from the general seasons, with a rifle, into late Nov and you guys should see what Big Blackies look like.
HAVE FUN with this tag!

seen yesterday morning in Kitsap...

:yeah: Buck would make the book. Imo. Looks pretty heavy too.

I didn't buy any but you might try logging into your WDFW account using your WILD ID number. There may be a record of your raffle ticket purchase there, and possibly the numbers. :dunno:
-
I have to work today but am heading out tomorrow to do some scouting! Hubby's bringing his bow in case we come across a bear-
and so it begins!
-
I would say go to Kapowsin but the best time IMO is during the quality deer hunt time for the Mashel unit but you would miss the first part of that hunt because it is closed for the elk season, if you hit it right after the elk season ends it is still pretty good.

they could hunt up until the day of the 6th, they will close it on the 6th is what I'm trying to say. I would hit it for sure till then.
-
Wind River would be my choice

Saw a spike and a doe today-- nothing that I would use my tag for but getting out there!
too hot though... :(

The crazy thing about the rut is you will see big mature bucks in an area that you never saw scouting. If you find an area with a lot of does in Aug, Sept and Oct, the big boys will show up there in Nov.
-
It's go time for crowinghen . We have the next 17 days off to hunt her tag . I just wanted to give every body on HW that helped us a big thank you . We spent time in 4 different GMU's scouting and put a hell of a lot of miles on our boots and rig . We've decided to stay close to home for the first part and hunt Kapowsin until elk season . It's the area we know the best , if we don't get it done there then we have 2 other units that we will hunt the remainder of our time off . She was not able to get her a deer on her archery tag so this more than likely will be her first deer . She did get a bear this year and that gave her a lot of confidence for this hunt . Thanks again to all the help .
-
Good luck!
-
Waiting for some pics. Good luck.
-
Can't believe I missed this thread! Can't wait for pics..... So much great advice it looks like you have all the bases covered. If it was my tag the hardest thing for me to do is log sufficient time in a good area. Resist temptation to move to another area quickly while the rut is in full swing. If there is one thing about blackies IMO nearly every unit on the Westside holds a buck like you are probably looking for. So keep faith if you know the area has the does. The record book only tells part of the tale, tons of great bucks never get entered and even more get away. Best of luck!
-
Sounds like a great 2.5 weeks coming up!
-
Good luck. That's one heck of a tag to harvest your first deer! Should be able to find a good one. We will be anxiously following to see the victory pics.
-
Time To Hunt ! goood luck

I would alternate that with up in the Goat Rocks.
-
They are heating up now! Clouds were on the deck, visibility was poor still saw six bucks in a short hooky day. One we would have liked to of killed and another nice buck we should of killed. Even the little spikes were cruising at full speed. It's about to get REALLY good  You will have them all to yourself after Saturday...you lucky buggers :chuckle:
-
Tag... its only a matter of time before you find a stupid big buck chasing does... good luck and congrats on the tag!
-
They are going nuts in my area. In the last 2 days we I've seen 3 mature bucks down, and heard of 2 others. Good luck, can't wait to see what you get.
-
The deer activity on thursday 10/29 morning was probably the most I have ever seen in 27 years of hunting. We seen deer every where we went. There were three of us and came home with two deer and we passed on 6+ bucks. At one point there was a 4 point bedded 100yrds from the road. My wife missed, gun was off after she dropped it while packing her elk out. Good luck with your tag.
-
We went to the woods yesterday- just a few new rubs. Watched a single doe feeding in a wind protected area- no buck following her. So we stayed at home today to let the season end-- Figured they aren't rutting hard yet in our scouted areas so we are resting up for hitting it hard this week! Got the rain gear out-- So excited!
Hope to get my first deer!
will keep ya all posted- thanks for the good thoughts!

Ma,am, I gotta say you have the best tag this state has to offer!!alot will disagree with me as alot think some kind of elk would be the best tag, but coming from a guy that thinks blacktail bucks are the greatest quarry ( non leathal) a man or women could ever hunt.. if your husband don't feel like going, pm me, I have the lynch creek Hancock pass and from what seen today the bucks are starting to get a little more active..
-
following
-
Well , after spending every spare moment we had in Kapowsin scouting for the last few months Hancock has just closed their lands . Disappointing to say the least .
-
Closed for what??
-
Due to the heavy rains.
-
Sorry to hear for you, sounds like more timber co. BS. :dunno:
-
Ive never heard that one before. Fire yes, heavy rain, never? I checked their website and you are correct. Odd one. Doesn't seem like its rained much more than it usually does this time of year.
-
If you're looking for a big Blacktail, Naselle is the place to hunt. Everybody goes there for elk, but there are some truly large Blacktails in the area. It's kind of a local secret. The Bear River, Williams Creek, and Willapa Hills units are all good ones. The only problem these days is access. There are still a few open to public areas, but more and more it's pay to hunt.
-
The deer numbers are way low in all the those areas above. Just trolling? Goose chase? She has the raffle tag why jab her Sitka?
I'd go to klickitat anyways. Hancock isn't very hepful.
-
Due to heavy rains? I can think of another explanation. No friggin way I'm buying that pass next year.
-
I'd be in the klick. Every day looking for a monster.
-

As Tom Petty sang....... "You believe what you want to believe."
The Willapa Hills are home to some very nice bucks. Still.
Now, you want to do some comparisons?
Using the Washington game department 2014 harvest reports, I'm going to figure the success rate for 4 and 5 point bucks per hunter in the modern firearm season, since she is after a trophy.
The Kapowsin Tree Farm is in the Mashel Unit (654) and seems to get a lot of votes for a big buck hunt. So we'll use that for the control hunt.
Unit name and number ----- 4 pt bucks ----- 5 pt+ bucks ----- Hunters ----- Hunter success rate on 4 and 5+ pt bucks
Mashel 654 ------------------- 26 ------------------ 4 ------------- 1,181 -------------------- 2.5%
Willapa Hills 506 ------------- 15 ------------------ 6 ------------- 940 --------------------- 2.2%
Bear River 681 --------------- 7 ------------------ 6 ------------- 182 --------------------- 7.1%
Williams Cr. 673 ------------- 7 ------------------ 1 ------------- 555 --------------------- 1.4%
North River 658 ------------- 10 ------------------ 4 ------------- 425 --------------------- 3.3%
W Klickitat 578 ------------- 71 ----------------- 26 ------------ 1,524 --------------------- 6.4%
Lincoln 501 ------------------ 18 ------------------ 10 ------------ 999 --------------------- 2.8%
Skookumchuck 667 -------- 24 ------------------ 11 ------------ 1,543 -------------------- 2.2%
Deschutes 666 -------------- 11 ------------------ 10 ------------ 589 --------------------- 3.6%
Copalis 642 ------------------ 7 ------------------ 3 ------------ 248 ---------------------- 4.0%
Now as far as sheer deer numbers go W Klickitat is king and Mashel and Skookumchuck look pretty good. But when you get down to hunter success rate on big bucks, Only W Klickitat stands out. And that is a 3 pt or better unit with a few benchlegs I'd guess. The king of hunter success on big bucks is little old Bear River at almost 3 times the success rate as Mashel. And as for Williams creek, it is showing the lowest success rate on big old bucks, but the overall success rate is 26.7% with a lot of young bucks as it has been heavily logged the last few years. As those young bucks get older, some brutes will be coming out of there, I have no doubt. For comparison, the overall success rate in Mashel is 14% and W Klickitat is 13.7% And Willapa Hills over all success rate is 24.5%. Willapa Hills and Williams Creek should be getting better as the new logging improves habitat.
Bear River besides being the best % chance for a trophy buck also sports a pretty good 22.5% overall success rate.
As for Copalis, I'm gonna guess some of those big ol' Ocean Shores bucks helps the big buck rate there.
-
Great breakdown Sitka  but I think I understand what DIY is implying. Here's my experience.... I haven't hunted the mashel at all. But sounds like the tag holder has it well scouted. I have spent extensive time in the skook, west klick and most of the coastal units mentioned. The biggest buck I have ever seen I would call a "true" blacktail was in skook in Vail. And several bucks that would be book class. The next whopper, was in willipa hills. Another absolute pig of a deer, during rifle elk.season. But overall I see far fewer deer on the coastal units. So even tho there are some stunners there I think the "fun" factor may be less because it's less likely to be sifting through alot of bucks waiting for a stunner. Also IMO the numbers are going to be somewhat skewed due to genetic makeup, I have seen a lot of four and five ( likely mainframe 4 with guards) point bucks in west klick that were not what I would consider a shooter on this tag and to a lesser extent in skookumchuck. But a 5 (4 point mainframe)point buck in a coastal unit is often a stunner. Granted a lot of my personal observation have been during archery elk seasons on the coast so not sure what impact that may have.
-
As for genetics, how can you beat Lincoln? Home of Lester Miller's world record typical Columbian Blacktail. I have to say, I have seen more truly large bucks in that unit than any other I have hunted. All of them were in the late blackpowder season and I never managed to connect on one, but they are there. I suspect most of them stay pretty well hidden until that late season. I think they are still looking for stray does and that brings them out. Could have gotten a couple of them with modern equipment.
Second most large bucks I've seen is in Willapa Hills. I blew a chance at a beautiful wide heavy racked 3x3 with eye guards, and the rest were in elk season. Same with Quinault Ridge. Most would never hunt deer there by choice except a few locals because there aren't a lot of deer there, but if you see a buck, chances are he's massive. We used to see mashers every year when we were elk hunting.
-
Do you have any updates for us? :)
-

She posted in another thread yesterday that they did hunt there and saw 24 does and zero bucks.
-
That's very odd for the first week of November
-
Watching those does will find you a good buck. Just keep looking.
-
Cold and frozen today , 10 does without bucks in tow a spike and a 2 point . Very little rub activity . Ran into a couple quality tag holders in the area , they are seeing the same thing or less . two more days in Kapowsin them off to another area .
-
On cold clear mornings, watch the east-facing bowls. I spent 6 hours in a shady tree stand last November only to find some road walker shot a buck nearby early morning on an east-facing slope (with no plan of how to get him out). Remember? A friend of yours volunteered your game cart. Next day was cold and clear and I tried the same strategy (hunting early-morning sunshiny spots) only to find a temperature inversion had settled in, so that above 1000 feet it was nearly T-shirt weather. Anyway, with that number of does running around, it's weird that at least a few young bucks aren't chasing. Justyhunter and I saw the same thing up Cyclone Creek last Veterans' Day in extremely windy conditions (a tree crashed to the ground when we parked). We found several does in that drainage without any sign of a rutting buck.
-
hitting it again today- Had to let Hubby sleep in :)-- I was awake most the night-
Still a little surprised at how few bucks we've been on-- but it's still been fun so far!
We have next week off too so I'm sure the rut will happen!
-
The big boy in my area that only shows on my cameras for a week or two this time of year showed up Nov. 2 at 7:49 pm.
By my gauge its started. :)
By late buck he will have disappeared, not to be seen till next November.
-
Where I was hunting in general season, ( I tagged out on a spike during the opener and took my dad the last week ) there was zero rut activity. Unit 663. I found only one rub line on friday of the last week. Only saw a couple single does and one nice buck. ( would have dropped the buck but my dad loaded the mag backwards in excitement and when the mag fell to the ground the buck was very close and spooked into the thick. ) Good luck!
-
Sitka is correct in stating that Naselle - Nemah - Bear River hold some of the largest "real" blacktails around. I've lived in the area for over 50 years and get my "little" bucks every year.
And besides, she has a blacktail tag and every one knows that:
There Are No Oaks In Blacktail Country !!!!
-
Don't tell all them southern Willamette valley boys that set the records that their deer aren't blacktails cause of the oak tree's. :)
But yeah, if you want a coastal buck, I'd hunt from the Grays river west in the lowlands.
-
Stop at Johnson's One Stop in Naselle late in hunting season and check out the buck pictures on their bulletin board for some examples of local deer. There will even be some 3x3s that will knock your socks off. Big, wide, and extremely heavy racks.
-
Headed out toward Allyn today- we've scouted a bit in this area- not as much as Kapowsin but Hancock is now closed to everyome except those that were drawn for the elk tag there.
Hoping to see some real rutting going on- have seen so many does and elk it's just stupid. Just the 2 point and a couple of spikes-
kind of amazed that there just aren't any bucks to be seen, But what the heck, we have been hunting hard and will keep at it-- hoping to see a bruiser this week-
but I have until Dec 31 ...
won't have internet for the next few days so will post when I can.
-
578 everyday all day and twice on Sunday.
-
okay we keep hearing West Klickitat... we're gonna check mason and kitsap out but if it's not happening we're heading to Klickitat.
all you peeps relling us to go there. I would really appreciate any info you could share with me.-- we have till sunday then back to work.
Looking for places to stay also-
thanks so much!
-
mason or kitsap is where I would spend my time but that is because I typicaly have a couple dandys on my cameras and know the areas very very well to find big ones. that being said if you don't know of a big buck that you are going after I wouldn't waste my time with the units, they can be very difficult to find deer in. I know of 3 bucks that would hit the 120 mark and maybe up to 130 with 100's of hours of scouting
-
Havent been in 578 for a couple years but king mt. north of trout lake used to and might still produce some good bucks. Could be flooded with elk hunters this time of year though.
-
Wherever you decide on going, better go fast. The rut came a week or so early and by next weekend will be over IMO.
Good luck. Hoping to see some pics of a bruiser
-
Saw a few more rubs in Mason county- nothing great so we're heading east tomorrow- hopefully we will see a few deer including a buck or two!
-
Were you hunting in mason this morning?
-
Been elk hunting in Grays harbor the last three days. No luck there, but man have we been seeing the deer. Today we started seeing big bucks including one very tall, very heavy 3x3 who was with a big fork. Looks like the rut is just starting here from what we've been seeing.

No we headed over to the west klickitat going out in a minute. It's beautiful country here ! Thought we have the time we should do something a little different this week.
Wish us luck!]

( posting under Hubby's log-in)
update:
Well we had to go back to work this week- I work 12 hour shifts so we won't be able to go out until friday morning. Hubby is gonna grab the cards out of a couple trail cameras tomorrow, so hopefully there will be something good there.
Thinking about heading back to West Klickitat to give it another go over Thanksgiving- we are doing our holiday meal this weekend so will have a few days off next week again.
Still thinking about how to get one!
thanks for the interest!

We there will only be about 40 other tag holders in West Klick between now and the 25th, then the Late ML elk hunters file in. Keep us posted!!!

Any update :dunno: ?

My wife drawing this tag is a little like winning the lottery and how many people that win the lottery go bankrupt . That's a little how we feel . We put everything into this , exhausted all are vacation . Between Oct. 28 and Nov. 31 there was only 5 days that we did not get out . That does not count the time we spent in Sept. trying to fill our archery tags and early Oct. scouting .We've seen a lot of deer , well over 250 does and a bunch of spikes and 2 points just not the buck we were looking for . I don't know if it's bad timing or bad luck . One example , over Thanksgiving weekend we found a buck that we had on camera , a nice 4x4 with good eye guards , that was working his rub line . One afternoon I set up a scent wick with blacktail urine to see if he would show up . The next morning we check it and he had shown up along with 2 other deer so I put some more scent on the wick and made a drag trail . I set Susie up about a 100 yards off in a blind and I head off with my bow to another area . A couple hours later she shoots , I head to her location and she informs me that a cougar had come in . As we approach the spot were the cougar was and we get snorted by one deer above us and 2 below . Just the way it's gone this year . She missed the cat cleanly , we were in the snow and I was able to follow the tracks quite a ways and there was no blood. We're still after it though , 10 more days in the month and we should be able to get out 4 of them maybe 5 . At this point if it has antlers it's going down .
We really are ready to move on . Almost every time we've gone into the woods we have seen predators and every time we've heard coyotes . It's time to do some predator management .

Thanks for the update. The title of this thread really got me thinking about what I would do. I absolutely love BT but it is because of the challenge that comes along with hunting them. No matter the outcome I an sure you made a season that is unforgettable. Good luck and never say die.

Good luck, hopefully there will be a good Christmas present or pre New Year's gift waiting in the woods. Bummer about missing the cougar. I'd give up any of the deer I've shot in the last ten years for a shot at a cougar.

Susie posting here under Justyhntr's log in :)
That day that the cougar came in the tripod attachment on my rifle had broken off, so I was quite a bit more unstable than when the tripod was attached to my gun-- difficult to shoot to say the least with that kind of excitement esp with broken equipment. But it was an awesome sight.
All excited to go out this past Saturday and hmmm got the stomach bug on Thursday , still too weak to go out Saturday morning. okay then , excited to go out Sunday, Hubby gets the bug. puking his guts out. that is kind of how the season has been.WTH :( but we probably wouldn't have been out in the woods to see all those does, the cougar, probably 4 bobcat, and everything else we've seen this year, if I didn't have that tag.
I hope we can get a few more hours in the woods before the year's over, crossing my fingers. hopefully with decent hunting weather too.

Nothing wrong with that.

That's really too bad. I consider that an OIL tag for Washington state.

Ate it .
But did you have fun? Definitely sounds like you got to see a lot of different country!
-
We had a great time , frustrating at times but fun . Learned a lot that will help in the late archery seasons in the future . We also learned there are a ton of predators , deer season may be over but hunting season is far from over .

Frustrating and fun....sounds like BT hunting! That tag just may be the hardest one in the state to do "justice" to.

Nice job on giving it your all and then some. You didn't settle for a forked horn and you have my respect for that. You can always look back and say you you set some high goals and hunted hard to make it happen!

This year has been a good reminder that an awesome tag doesn't necessarily equate to success - easy or otherwise. I am happy you were able to spend so much time with the hunt for a real bruiser blacktail. The time spent on the hunt tells me you guys "did the tag justice"
