Title: potential?
Post by: jackelope on September 20, 2007, 05:11:00 PM
in anyone's opinion, is this a buck that will mature to a nice 4x4 given an opportunity to mature or is he destined to be a 3 point his whole life? curious to see what everyone thinks. i'm sure he's a young deer, and appears to be off to a good start. lets say he has a great supply of food and he has an endless supply of water within a mile in any given direction...all of which are true.

if he can keep from getting shot he needs a year or two to be a real winner. he is showing good symetry and decent width for the size of his horns. I say feed him for a couple years if only for genes.

If he were a blacktail then I would think he would stay a 3 point.
But since most mule deer mature to be 4 points, and he appears to be  young, probably about two and a half yrs. So yes he would most likely be a 4 point next year.

Looking at him again,I changed my mind.He has pretty big splits, and depending on the genetics for the area I'll bet he'll stay a 3 point now .

His neck seems awful thin. Has to be a young buck, probably with some potential.

I would guess him as a 3X3 for life, even a young buck with good genes would go 4X4 at an early age. I am thinking the gene pool could be tainted there. The fork horn looks big to only be a forkie.

Young buck, I think he will be a 3x for life though.

Look at the 2pt. Same body size, young deer for sure. He will likely not see next year, but if he did, I'd say 30lbs heavier and a 4x4 with longer eye guards out to his ears in width, 22-23".

Even with bad genetics as long as they had plenty of feed and water, and lived to be 4 1/2 to 5 /12 years old, I have no doubt they would both end up as four points.
