I SHOULD just stick to my Rem 700 in 223 shooting 60gr Vmax. It's been deadly, but I had one bad trip with it where I couldn't get shots off, and when I did I couldn't hit the broad side of a mountain! So I've got a jinx on it now!

I carry the 243win Encore when I'm targeting Cougars.

Might switch to the D-tech 243wssm on top of my R15 lower. That thing SHOOTS!

I put the 222 Barrel on the Encore shooting 40gr Vmax when I'm targeting Bobcats.

I'm working on getting my R15 in 204 to shoot for targeting Coyotes, but I can't get good groups out of the 40gr. Hoping to figure it out, I love that gun.

The Maxx1 Camo Bennelli SBE2 Steady grip backs them all up!

how do you like that tikka, i thought about buying one in .270 wsm for my dad this christmas but i wasnt sure just because of the lightness build of the gun.
Title: Re: Your Coyote gun
Post by: saylean on January 10, 2009, 10:23:02 PM
I have really enjoyed it so far (not really for yotes, but big game). No more than any other gun I have had, but its been good to me. Downed 2 bears and a deer without issue, one shot each.

I do have to say, that I dont care too much for the plastic clips...they just feel cheap to me. But they are light and wont rust... ;) The gun is easy to carry, even with a bipod/scope on. Action is smooth. I give it a thumbs up.

Sorry for the high jack...proceed.

right now. . .

-Remington 870 Super Mag w/3.5" #4 buckshot
-Ruger 10/22 .22LR

hopefully soon either. . .

-Savage Model 10 Predator combo in brush camo
     or
-Howa/Knoxx Axiom combo in prairie ghost camo

both would be in .243 to start off with but the .204 Ruger is very tempting. . .it's just that the .243 has a ballistic advantage that I have a hard time "downgrading" to the smaller .20-.22 centerfire cartridges. . .

Firecrotch you will not be disappointed in the tikka. I have T3 lite in 300 win mag, my brother has same rifle in 300wsm. I have other nice rifles but this is my favorite due everthing I point at dies!!. The gun is a little cheap in the clip, trigger guard, being plastic but i don't care about looks these things are killing machines. I change factory recoil pad to limbsaver and that's it ,with 7 mule deer dead between both rifles IMHO the best rifle in its price range hands down.

Man those Coopers are sweet lookin! Do you have a synthetic or wood stock on yours?

I bought a Tikka .223 varminter last year and put a Leuy Vari XIII 3.5-10x50 on it. Unfortunately, the two times Ive gotten to go yote hunting last year, I got sick as a dog the first time. The second time, I had to come home right away because my wife got really sick. :bash: Its a tack driver at the range though :chuckle:
Now I just need to find time to make it back over to the eastside within the next month or so.

Was just goin to ask if you were shooting the 115 VLD's.  Good man!

That's as hard hitting a .25-06 load as I've ever seen. 115 VLDs at 3200 are no joke... they're packing more energy at 400 than almost every factory .270 load with a 130 grain bullet.

Truth be told though... I shoot more of the 100 grain NBTs than anything. Same load as the 100 Sierras in the picture above... but the Noslers shoot better.

I really like the 6.5/284 also... but with the 115 Bergers in .25 cal... you have to step way up to the 130 VLD to gain anything in BC on the .25-06. And, you can't shoot them anywhere near 3200fps (like the .25-06 will run a 115)... so you give up some of that 'flat-shooting' side of the .25-06.

Actually, with the 120's, the 6.5 can be almost exactly the same thing as your 25-06.  I will be shooting the 140 VLD's.  I like the 140's (.618 b.c.) at 2950 better than 115's (.479 b.c.) at 3200 as a long range round.  If I want flat shooting, I will take the Cooper .204 or my 300 win. spitting out 168 VLD's at 3250.   The 6.5 will fill another void.

BC on the 115 Berger is .520... and it shoots a bit flatter than that. After shooting the drop chart it works out at .540. The 6.5/284 is the cool schitt when mated with those 140 VLDs... though I like my 210 VLDs at 3200 even better. But, neither of those belong in the coyote gun discussion... now, where is that long range deer hunting thread???

If you have checked lately, it appears that Berger has "re-evaluated" the Ballistic Coefficients for some of their bullets - the 25 cal 115's are one of them.  Now listing at .479.  If you look at comparable bullets from other bullet makers, a few of the bullets seemed a little inflated in the past.  Another of these is the .30 cal 168 VLD's.

Very nice stickslinger!!  I was looking at one of those a couple weeks ago in .223 that had the break.  Not sure why you would want a break with a .223!  Loses about two inches of bore and the barrel is already pretty short.  What is the barrel length anyway?

Any idea on the purpose of milling the angles into the barrel over going fluted?

The barrel is 24", 2" longer than the one with break. I agree, you dont need a break on a .204 or .223. I think that is why they just put this on out without break. Lots of complaints about the break on the small caliber. They answered back quick.

I do not know the exact details on the thory behind the triangle barrel. There is some method to the madness. Supposedly has the capabilities of bull or fluted as far as heat transfer but half the weight. Thats really all I know.

Its still close to 9lbs though. About average.

I agree you don't need the brake on something this small. Looking at yours, I wish mine didn't have the brake. Were most of the complaints about the noise, or were there other complaints as well? Just looking for potential issues with my gun.

The VTR without a brake is a Cabela's Special according to the coupon I got in the mail. BTW, I have a coupon for $70 of the VTR without a brake at Cabelas if anybody wants it. It expires on the 18th I believe though.

For those wondering about the VRT without break. It is a Cabelas exclusive for now, cant even find it online. I guess they shipped out some in .223 and .204 to all the stores and then put it on sale to get them out there. It was $70 off (thanks again Antlershed). You dont need a cupon they have a stack of them at the gun counter or you can print it on line.

I'll give you a review on how she shoots tomorrow.

What Foxpro did you order Lowedog?

I got the FX3.  There is a guy on ebay selling them for $380 shipped.  That was the best price I found anywhere.  He's advertising them as a long range goose call but it has predator calls loade on it also.  He's also including a CD with his own goose calls so if anybody wants the cd  you can have it.

To help out with lugging my new heavy barreled Vanguard I'm gonna get one of the packs that you can slip the rifle into. . .I will use that when I'm going from stand to stand and when going from the truck or on the way back to the truck. . .it's no big deal for me to have the rifle in a pack in between stands because I usually lug the 3.5" Super Mag along with me just in case. . .that way I will have a gun handy if I need it/the opportunity presents itself. . .but I'm also already dealing with more weight right off the bat than most of you probably are. . .I can deal with the extra weight I'd rather have the extra gun for the close in stuff anyway. . .it can get pretty hairy in the brush here on the wet side!!!

Finally got a scope for my .22-250 and got it sighted in this past Sunday. . .so it's time to post some pic's. . .this is my Weatherby Vanguard Varmint Special in .22-250 (22" #3 heavy contour barrel w/recessed target crown) with a Burris Fullfield II 4.5-14x42mm scope. . .it shot a .392" 3-shot group @ 100 yards and a 1.9375" 5-shot group @ 200 yards shooting cheap Winchester USA 45 gr. JHP's!!! Not bad for a "cheap" Vanguard with a non-bedded action and a non-free floating barrel and a too heavy a trigger pull!!!

. . .and my Remington 870 Super Mag 3.5" 12 ga.

. . .the next plans call for a shooting stick/bipod for both of them and a Knoxx Spec Op's stock with the Power Pack for the 870. . .with it's adjustable length of pull it will make the 870 more comfortable to shoot coyotes with a shorter LOP and then I can go back to a standard LOP while I am shooting clay pigeons or doves. . .
