Title: OWB Sidearm holster options?
Post by: NSAECHIN on August 01, 2015, 10:41:39 PM
Hey everyone, I picked up a Glock 20 10mm to use as my side arm for protection against predators etc.

I have looked at various OWB holsters but not sure which one to get. The traditional OWB holster on the belt gets caught up with my rifle when I am hunting from previous experience.

I see that Blackhawk makes their tactical thigh holsters but I would prefer a quicker draw when in that situation since Blackhawks holster have various release points to get handgun out. I know it takes practice etc but to master it in a stress scenario would be tough.

What does everyone have as their OWB holster for their side arms?

Blackhawk makes a very good holster.
I carry my Springfield XD40 subcompact in a Blackhawk CQC with serpa lock. Love it.
But because it goes on your belt you will still have the problem, but the tactical holster might be a good choice.
Regardless Blackhawk is good stuff.
How about a shoulder rig?

I had the same question a little over a year ago, and drove myself nuts looking for the right option (too many out there, with too many opinions). A thigh holster would work for quick draw if you got it a little higher on your hip. I've used one at work, and ran the single leg strap instead of double, getting it higher on my hip closer to a comfortable draw spot. However, I didn't care for the added bulk while hunting.  What I found that works best for me was a Safariland ALS holster. It keep the gun close so its not getting caught on branches and what not. It is also low enough that it sits below the hip belt of each of my packs. I do a fair amount of mtn biking into where I hunt, and it's never been in the way nor uncomfortable either. As far as clearing my rifle when I do carry one (I'm a dirty bowhunter :IBCOOL:), I don't really notice it giving me a problem getting hung up on the sling.
Here's the links to what model I run:
http://www.safariland.com/retention/model-6395-als-low-ride-level-i-retention-duty-holster-32206.html

http://www.safariland.com/retention/model-6390-als-mid-ride-level-i-retention-duty-holster-30587.html

I chose the low ride of the two, and it works great. Once it came in the mail, I removed the thumb guard, because I'm not worried about someone trying to steal my gun off my hip, and I saw it as something easy to get caught on.

Sorry for rambling, just offering my  :twocents:

Avoid Serpa holsters. There is a reason they are banned for the military and many govt agencies as well.

Well that was current as of 2012, maybe Blackhawk has changed things in the last few years but I doubt it.

Seems the G20 is difficult to find a good holster for me. I have three, Galco 1129wc, an uncle miles plastic one that slips over the belt and a small yaqi(?) style slider. This gun is so large it tends to pull the grip out and yes it catches on rifle and other stuff or the holster digs into the hip (unncle Mike's) .  Shoulder may be the best for this beast.

I'm using a Blackhawk with my G20 but I'm switching to a Safariland ALS

bah I grabbed the wrong one thinking the camo was a new cool option,  that site is confusing but the ALS is a good option I think.

I don't want a hood to hit my back pack belt when I flop it over and even with practice I'm still a tad nervous depressing that side button on the Blackhawk with my trigger finger and drawing fast.  Only takes once and you've shot yourself in the leg/foot or just into the dirt if you're lucky.

you can also get the quick change forks for the safarii land, one on the pack and you could just click your holster on the pack or put it back on your hip

Thanks for everyone's input! I think as of right now I am going to consider the Safariland 6395 low ride. Is the bottom of the holster open where it meets the barrel or enclosed? Just want the option of adding an extended length barrel...

Also considering the thigh holster, wish I could just go to a local store to try one of those out. I was at Sportsmen's Warehouse and SW WA Surplus in Vancouver but they didn't have any options available for the Glock 20.

Was the added bulk due to the straps?

Just checked Blackhawks website and does not seem like they make an option for the Glock 20?  :'(

Can you give me further input on the Galco 1129wc?

I just ordered a custom shoulder rig from Camano Ridge Custom Leather. I'm basically getting this one with Amber Ostrich skin inlay. 4 weeks lead time. Nice guy and provides lots of options.

I have the aliengear IWB for my Glock 27, its nice and comfortable although not very breath able. I think their OWB holster would get caught with my rifle though.

Thanks John but after trying my friends shoulder holster I decided it wasn't comfortable enough for the full size glock 20.

I like the galco, fits good, more gun coverage than a yaqi, kind of a pancake style. No security strap.

I'm thinking for out hunting it would be best with a thigh setup.

I'll be using mine for my full size XD .45. carrying that on my hip isn't an option.

Yeah, this is tough. I am leaning towards the thigh holster at this point but too bad there isn't anything local for me to try out.

Is the holster locked in by a button? I clicked the link and it does say thumb break but no demo on how its held in the holster. I want something with a quick draw...

and regular belt loops hold it to the belt it is a very natural position to shove the thumb break off as you grab the pistol.

I carry my G40, the big brother to the G20, in a Keinai chest holster.  Im a large fellow and find it very comfortable to were all day.  It doesn't interfear with my pack or my bino harness.  Might be an option.
