Title: New shotgun...
Post by: Commando on August 03, 2015, 06:27:15 AM
About a month ago I got my new duck gun a benelli super black eagle 2, love that gun. Now I'd like to get a new upland gun. So with that what do you guys use/ like? I'd like a 20 gauge that can go up to 3 inch, haven't decided on 26 or 28 in barrel so I'm open to suggestion on that. I really like benelli but I am open to anything. As far as price goes I have no problem to save up for it but would like to keep it in the ball park of 1500 give or take some. This is gonna be a do all upland bird gun chukar, pheasants, quail, Huns. And go.

CZ Upland Ultralight - you can get a 12g that weighs less than most 20s.

I really like my Browning Cynergy Feather with 28" barrel.  Like all the light weight break action guns it has a considerable amount of recoil.  If I were in the market for new gun I would look at the new Bennelli Ethos.  The new recoil system in the stock is interesting.  I haven't had the opportunity to shoot one yet, so I don't if it is as effective as advertised.

Take a look at the Franchi Instinct. I bought the 20ga last year and it is extremely light to carry and little recoil. Great shotgun!

the "purist" would want an O/U or SBS for upland, however, when I climb those damn mountains for chukar and get a couple hard earned flushes, I want that 3rd load... otherwise I too love my O/U's..... could always chamber 2 rounds! :chuckle:

Don't get me wrong bbd I do want a over under but like you said that third shot can really help. I am going to use this gun for chukar and that third *censored* will be most welcome if I can get it off before they are out if range.

Get the auto loader. Take it from someone who has shotguns running out his ears. You want the 3rd shot!

My thought on the matter...

The SBE is made to take abuse, buy a sling for it and use for chukar hunting and duck hunting.

Buy a light weight O/U and carry it cracked open with a pair of shells in it for pheasant and grouse etc. (assuming you have a pointing dog here). Take it from me, nothing scarier than getting tangled up in a clear cut full of slash and having to haphazardly toss a loaded autoloader and hope it doesn't go off in the direction of your dog as you fall.

I use and would consider a Beretta 686 20 with 26" barrels.  Barely over 6 lbs and shoots 3".  That extra pound or two grinds on you after a long day.

I would go for a Benelli Montefeltro if I was a guy who wanted to go auto and it can be had for under 1K.

Good luck on the decision and purchase!

I'd suggest looking for a used browning citori,I've used mine hard for 21 years and it's eaten about 270k rounds at birds and a pile of little clay targets and the lever is still just a hair to the right of center, the citori it replaced(long story, lost it by setting it on top the canopy and driving off) had 26 inch barrells, the one I have now has 28 inch barrells,I shot both well but I think the 28 inchers work a skosh better on the long crossers. Not much of a chukar hunter because I'm lazy quail/pheasants/and stubble huns are a better fit for me.Never had a single lick of trouble with it.My shooting buddy at the club has 500k through his 425 sporting clays browning.

I'd suggest looking for a used browning citori
 :yeah:

........and I don't hunt much chukar either because both of my legs are the same length.

I would be looking at used Browning Citori, Bertta 686 or a CZ, for an O/U. As for auto loaders I’m not a Benelli fan at all they kick like mules, I’ve had five dumped every one. Then try a Beretta 391 or an Explor or even a Remington 11-87. I shoot over 5K rounds every year with a brace of Browning O/Us for clays and Beretta's for waterfowl and upland birds.  :twocents:

Thanks for all the replies guys. I was looking at some online earlier and I do like the montefeltro and the m2. Wish I had enough to just get them all! I decided that I am going to get a auit first than a o/u. I will keep you guys posted

I traded my sbe for the M2. One of the best decisions I've made. The ultralights are sweet also.

I agree the ultralight looks really good. The only problem with that is I am not to sure how much I want to take a wood gun into the chukar hills. That might be me just over thinking it idk. But the more I think about it the more I think I want to get a synthetic stock.

As far as o/u goes has any one seen or messed with the new benelli 828?

I broke my wood stock on my 11 87 chasing chukars. Be prepared to fall down on steep hill sidees with loose rocks  :chuckle:

Replaced with synthetic

I have a CZ ou ultralite I like for upland.  Looking at av390 or m2 this year

Why not a traditional chukar gun. Like a remington 31L my 16 weights 5.6 pounds and is the dream pump as far as I am concerned for a chukar gun. Or an old remington 1100. Over under why not a Marlin 90 light weight and cheap enough if you fall.  All of these sell used for $700 or less. The third shot gives one last chance after I blow the first two so I am partial to my 31L.

Buy what fits.
Not what somebody else likes.
I spent thousands to learn that lesson.
