Title: High Country bear down
Post by: skagitsteel on August 05, 2015, 10:08:56 AM
Went up to the Alpine for a quick morning hunt.  Started hiking around 330 AM, this guy steps out at about 550 AM and it was bear down early.  Pretty happy to have decent boar down in the high country 1st week of August.  It was a heavy pack out, around 5-6 miles solo in one trip.  Took the head and boned out meat (lost quite a bit due to shoulder shot, and part of a rear quarter with follow up shot)(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimages.tapatalk-cdn.com%2F15%2F08%2F05%2Fa7e35345c7719de47833b3960d28cb92.jpg&hash=b55797699693cf7ec06c16eebdca8eaffcc3874e)(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimages.tapatalk-cdn.com%2F15%2F08%2F05%2Fbe907f47f00beaf40bfa03655b8edef3.jpg&hash=c7a9d65a5522308ac9965f150199965905e797f0)

Good looking bear. Sometimes those little quick hunts can turn into great moments.

Good looking bear. Sometimes those little quick hunts can turn into great moments.

In the past three years, I've taken a bull, two 4x4 whitetails, and two bears on those "quick hunts"

Ironic after striking out during deep/steep trips  :chuckle:

Nice thats good to hear. We've got a bear hunt this weekend but I've been worried about the berries, they've been ripe for a while now in a lot of areas I've been checking out so you're giving me some hope! That looks like a great bear

Berries are definately different this year. The south facing are mostly burned up.  The ones I was hunting over will be ripe for atleast a few more weeks if not a month.

Nice!  Looks a little lean.  Much in the way of berries yet?

Hole in his shoulder looks like you were up close with an Accubond!

Lots of berries, just in weird places, everything is ripe that didn't get burned up.  Some of them are pretty soft almost no green berries left.

Berger vld left that hole, absolutely liquefied both lungs.  I have only had an accubond make a hole like that once, but is was close

Thanks for the info.  So that is an exit hole then.  Cool!  We get similar holes at entrance on close Accubond shots, but exit holes are less impressive.

Now all you need is an October tank to go along with this one.  Congratulations on the early bear.

Nice bear  What did you shoot him with?

300 win mag Berger 185 vld

.300 win mag lung shot at 120 yards and he still ran at you until you hit him again at 30 yds? One tough bear!

Sounds like it was a fun hunt. Smile on your face says it all!

:yeah: those are the best eating bears to get in my experience.  They are huge and fuzzy too, great hides.

He was pretty tough, although he was not going much farther, he had slowed to a walk and didn't have many steps left, just no sense letting him lose any more elevation I would have to gain back with a heavy load  :chuckle:

All ripe up high, the blueberries from 3500 to 4000 are mostly done, 4500 to 6000 they look good on north and east faces. Some south slopes burned and never ripened  Bear was taken above 5000

I did go last night to my low land spot ..The beaver ponds I usually hunt were dried up .. everything around them dead  :bash: :bash: I put up my trailcam on one spot I know they use a lot ..We will see if anything is moving around in there ...I may hit my High country spot this coming weekend ...
