Only staying one night in the backcountry and my 4500 badlands is full! No clothes, just a water proof light jacket. This is what happens when you have cheap bulky gear, sleeping bag and tent take up half the room. I'm jealous of you serious backcountry hunters!! Pack must weigh around 35 or so pounds!
-
one night? ditch the tent,

one night? ditch the tent,
ugh, your probably right, I just love the idea of being in a closed tent.
-
Haha its all part of the fun, and in my mind a possitive hunter goes way further than a serious one !
Obviously the lighter you are the more you can focus on your hunt instead of being beat but just have a blast and enjoy the misery and the rest will come with time

Shed the tripod. Get a monopod and use it as a walking stick.
-
LOL that's almost a day hike for me. Yes I'm not to happy about it either

the tri pod really doesn't weigh as much as it looks, the wind river spotting scope has a bit of weight though. My one mountain house meal was made in 2013, do these meals have an expiration? No exp. date on the package? I forgot to add the flask of crown, a few more ounces to add!

Find a way to strap your bag and tent to the outside of your bag. I've done 3 days out of a 2400 ci bag and I don't have all the top notch lightweight gear
-
I pack like that for quick trips frequently but mainly because a full pack typically packs better than only a partially full pack and 35lbs isn't worth mentioning for a pack, even if you shoot something. I can pack 7 days in a Badlands Sacrifice at 3400ci with a little space to spare. I typically strap it to a frame pack frame for longer trips though and have lots of extra space fore game.
My 7 day pack does not weigh much more than 35lbs and I use compression sacks so my soft gear has little bulk.
-
Probably a stupid question, do mountain house meals expire? Mine was made in 2013, still good?
-
If the bag is uncompromised it should be good. Might have less flavor :dunno:
Have fun  35 lbs is fine even though it should probably weigh like 15 :chuckle:
Who cares though, have a blast

I have eaten MH older than that and I am still alive. Take that for what it's worth :dunno:
-
Lol, no kidding! At least when I get rid of my trail camera and small salt block coming out will be much lighter! Can't wait to spend the night in the back country and hopefully find my wife's bull!
-
I'll take it, beef stew for dinner tonight!!

They do have expiration dates, I'm going to avoid food poisoning if I can
-
Well I looked all over the package and no exp. date? Getting ready to try it , I have to use a stick for a spoon since I forgot my spork!
-
If you find a stick with alil for on one end and sharpen each side of the fork it works pretty well
-
This will have to do for now. :chuckle:
-
Haha might cut your bag in half so you dont get messy hands

Not going to get food poisoning from MH, that idea is only one step from impossible. I think shelf life is 20 years and that is just the freshness date (termed expiration date because that is when the freshness warranty expires), you could eat it next century and be safe. Too many people are so unreasonably (and ignorantly)worried about expiration dates, it is a fallacy of our modern and wasteful society that just because it has an expiration date it is unsafe, inedible, and downright disgusting just because an arbitrary date has been reached.

It appears you are correct,it's a freshness date and not an expiration date

If your going in with a mountain house and stove. Leave them at home. Make a ppj or pp honey sandwich or 2

:yeah: on the tripod. Every now and then I think ill use my spotting scope. Just about everytime I dont use it, and wish I'd left it at home. :chuckle:
-
Isn't that the truth! Only cows and calves so far, no reason to pull the scope out yet. Sure is quiet and cool up here.
