After I get a little more cash together I'll be buying a new rifle. It needs to be chambered for 300 win mag.
I would like to spend $600-$700 but for the right rifle will go to $900... Not a penny more!
I would prefer to have a synthetic stock.
I would prefer to not use a detached magazine but that's not a deal killer.
Stainless would be nice but not required.
Would really like to have it made in America but know that's hard to come by now days.
My biggest concern is accuracy obviously...
I've been looking at Remington model 700 sps stainless, tikka t3 lite stainless, and tikka t3 super lite stainless.
What are your thoughts, good or bad, on those? Any other recommendations.

For my hunting guns the all weather savage has been realy hard to beat and it comes with the nikon scope.
Cabelas has them for $700
and my local gun shop in orting has them for a little less
-
I am partial to savage. 116 fhss aluminum bedded synthetic stock, floor plate, stainless. It's not in production anymore but iif you can find it, it should run under $700.
If you don't mind dbm FCSS, bear Hunter or in bluing fcns, long range Hunter.
I like T3 lites but in 300 they kick like a mule.
What glass do you plan on putting in the gun?

Right now a have a Leupold rifleman 4x12x40 but if I sold that I'd buy something a little more updated

Remington 700 stainless SPS.

Do you have one? What do you like about it? What do you not like? The sps is what I'm kind of leaning towards...
-
I'd find an older 700 and buy a bell and Carlson stock, you'd come in way under your 900. Take the left over funds a save for a vx3 3.5x10

Yes, I picked one up from A local Bi-Mart 4 or 5 years back. Shot well with 165gr Accubonds and RL- 22 powder. It was the stainless SPS, it was 425.00 plus tax. Bi-Mart still has great deals on them, I believe they are still in the same price range. I may pick up another I had the original one I purchased worked over by Benchmark Barrels and it ended up as a 30" .338 Edge.

Why .300 win mag? Reloading? Magnum?
-
I like the availability of ammo... Plus three of the four guys I hunt modern deer with have 300 win mags so it's nice having the same ammo if something happened... That being said, I'm not against going with a different round provided it has approx the same knock down power and trajectory and it's not hard to come by.
-
Never heard a bad thing about Tikka accuracy though don't care for the feel. 700s can be hit or miss on accuracy but easily be upgraded in parts. Haven't seen an A or X bolt that wouldn't shoot well.
-
I bought a new SPS this winter in .270. I'm very happy with the rifle. It was VERY accurate out of the box, even with factory ammo.
-
Savage has my vote for OUT OF THE BOX ACCURACY!!! Can't go wrong with any mentioned, but you should really look at the Savages. I own a couple ;) so I speak with 100% confidence.

I have a 700 xcr II and its ok. The trigger is nice but the stocks suck. but I have 3 browning a bolts and they will out shot my model 700 all day long. one tikka t3 that will shot with the brownings but it will cost you a stock. They are hollow and if you by chance drop it or bump something well stalking a deer or elk. game over. but they are a really nice rilfe.

If I were looking for a 300 win mag to just buy and go hunt with in that price range it would be a Rem 700 cdl, to get one in your price range you may have to go used but they are around.
As mentioned, tikka's aren't a bad option but they do have some pretty healthy recoil in that round especially the super light versions. If your looking at Tikka because of the removable mag, keep this in mind. If you want to carry an extra mag on you, you may have to work it over a bit. They are noisy, even in a pocket or pouch the ammo rattles inside of them when your moving quickly or jarring it around over rough terrain. I know this first hand.

Remington. and a new trigger

I like the savage 111, my concern would be being able to build in the future. I want a nice out of the box shooter right now but could see where some day I'd like to spend some money and build a really nice rifle. From what I've seen that criteria is leading me towards a 700. If I knew I could easily find parts then I would consider used as well..
-
I have a .300 and .338 identical rifles. I see no reason to use the .300. The .338 out performs it on everything. And I much prefer the .338 for elk. Deer only the .300 is fine. The kick is identical for both and with good pad and synthetic stock theres no need for a brake.

If the price is right I would seriously consider this. I have one in 300wsm with a VX6 on top. For an out of the box factory gun you can not beat it. Sweet trigger. Already has the muzzle break. I sighted mine at 100 yrds after mounting the scope and haven't shot it inside 400 since. I've never been a long range shooter but banging steel at almost 800 yrds is pretty damn cool.

You don't think a .300 win mag is adequate for elk?

:chuckle: that's what I was thinking. On deer a 300 Win mag is "fine" :o

The mag-numb guys have it all figured out.
-
338mag vs 300 mag you better look at the book again. Know a lapua or a rum that different store :IBCOOL:..
-
save a little more money and go for 300 weatherby mark5
-
Willys is a Elmer Keith type guy, that's ok. Shoulder as many as you can find in your price range, which one fits?
-
Im a big fan of the browning x-bolt. I have one in the 7mm mag. Very accurate and light weight. Some guys don't like them because browning isn't usa made anymore, but I honestly have no complaints.
-
Tikka topped with a Vortex. Both because it gets some people excited, but mostly just an affordable out of the box setup! No tinkerng involved..
-
Buy a cheap donor gun and then give it to Grizz Precision to rebarrel. There are very few factory guns out there worth owning right now. Companies want too much for too little compared to just having what you really want built by a shop. :twocents:

I have a Tikka t-3 Lite stainless chambered in .300 win. mag. I topped it with a Leupold VX-3 3.5-10 scope and I use it as my "go to" elk rifle. It's easy to carry, tough and accurate. If you go with the Tikka, you may want to replace the stock recoil pad with a Limbsaver pad. Good luck with your choice!

Do yourself a favor and
Take my advice
Buy yourself a Tikka

Why? Not trying to be a smart a$$ I'm just curious your reasoning.

Well I bought a Remington model 700 sps stainless 300 win mag today...
I held a tikka... Not a fan
I held a savage... Doesn't fit me right
I held a Winchester model 70... I hate the safety
Picked up the sps and knew right away I wanted it. Can't wait to start throwing some lead!
