Sorry this is probably a double posting but I figured I would ask. I have been looking into actually getting a nice set of hunting clothing for my pasayten wilderness hunts. I hunt up there every year during the high buck hunt and during general season. I have been looking into the KUIU brand a lot because they are cheaper then Sitka. I have also looked at the First light brand, cabelas instinct gear, and Nomad. Just trying to see if anyone has any experience with these and what they prefer or how they performed. The pasayten is rough and steep and the weather can be hot one day and wet and cold the next. (anyone that has hunted up there knows how quickly the weather changes. I was going to select the KUIU Guide DCS Jacket and the KUIU attack pant.
-
I picked up some Kuiu gear this year. I ordered there KUIU Guide DCS Jacket and Pants about 4 months ago and I finally received the Pants about a week ago. I called Kuiu this morning to find out when I will be getting the Jacket and they told me the same story as the last 5 times I called "We should be expecting another shipment in soon". I was told it should be here late August..
If you want that Guide gear, I suggest ordering them ASAP as the back orders will keep piling up. Or go with a different line of Kuiu. First lite brand is also really nice, cant go wrong there. :twocents:
-
I have quite a bit of Kuiu clothing, and I love it all. I love my Guide Jacket, but it's not something I usually take on a backpack hunt. I take my Chugach rain jacket and Superdown jacket instead. The Attack Pants are great, one of my favorite pieces. I think the Firstlite merino base layers are better than the Kuiu.
-
:yeah:
-
I'm trying attack pants this year. The few times out scouting they have performed well. I love the fit. The side zip vents really help when its warm out. I hope they wear well and last.
-
Love both the first lite and kuiu. The first lite is my favorite, I ordered the puffy and got it within a week and the under garments are really nice. Either brand you can't go wrong.
-
I keep hearing the guide jacket is a must have. No brainer to pick up one of those to start.
-
I have a older pair of attack pants. Really like them. And really need to preorder some attacks with the side vents.
-
So this year I went with Kuiu, everything has fit well and should function for the way that I hunt. So here is my list.
Chugach NX Rain gear- was looking at the Yukon set up but wanted more versatility throughout the year
145 Merino top/bottom- love merino base layers, started with terramar and decided to upgrade
Alpine pants- early season, I have most of my set ups from either a sitting or kneeling shot position for stability so pads were a must
Peloton 200 hooded zip-t-early season top or late season layering
Guide Jacket and Pants- cold early season weather or late season layering
I also picked up some socks, gloves, and bino harnass. Waiting on gaiters to round out. I went with Verde for the pattern here on the West side.
Still planning on getting some 210 merino and the super down, but if I get lucky and fill some tags those will be Christmas gifts. Also looking hard at their bag. I like the specs, but still have to think about that. It took me 3 years to decide to get this stuff.
-
I would have gone kuiu, but I just have a problem with not being able to try stuff on before buying. With that said, I pulled the trigger on first lite. Guide pant and long sleeve merino top.
The guide pant is very comfortable and flexible. Very nice!
-
For the sizing I took a few peoples advice and tried on Sitka stuff at the store than envisioned a little more athletic fit in areas and ended up pretty much right on with my sizing. It won't be too baggy when I get to my goal weight and right now it's not tight or constricting with all layers on.
-

Merino base, chugach rain gear, fleece mid layers is a good start.......

Spot on.
Kuiu clothing and stone glacier or Exo packs.

Ive worn the ultra and non ultra merino layers, Tiburon pants, attack pants, guide pants, guide vest, super down jacket, Yukon set, merino/guide beanies, guide gloves, and peloton jacket. All have their place and work well. I didn't care for the gloves, I'm yet to find gloves I like. The Yukon set is too heavy for backpacking, but if you need a waterproof and durable set for day hunting, its legit. Tiburon pants are my favorite warm weather pants, they breath incredibly well and are durable to boot. In September I'll pair them up with a merino 145 LS shirt and the guide vest for early mornings. When things warm up I shed the vest. The guide series is great for late season, and if it gets cold toss on the Super down underneath it.
I'd really do hate Kuiu as a company, but I'm yet to find better fitting and working gear. I guess the devil you know is better than the devil you don't.
-
I have the Tiburon line.. and love it. the only problem i have with Kuiu is that they have a hard time keeping items in stock.. If you look at there web site today you will notice half if not more items are back ordered. Other then that I might order more and expect to receive it next year....
-
I was able to get quite a bit of their gear over the past four months. Have only tried out the tiburon stuff during bear season this year. Most comfortable and best fitting clothing I've worn. As does the rest of their items. Can't wait to put the rest of it to the test.
Also got an icon pro pack 1850. Love it.
Fit is deffinitally athletic fit. If your on the border with a size, I'd size up.
Any of their backordered items is well worth the wait! Although it may be too late this year to get some of them by the coming seasons.
-
For you guys having stuff on back order I would shoot them an email. I have ordered all my stuff since July 1st and the only things I have outstanding are my gaiters (fabric issue) and my Chugach jacket (I waited to long to make up my mind between Yukon and Chugach). I just got notice that my Peloton 200 xip-t hoodie shipped today.

What are some opinions on the Chugach rain jacket? I am looking at getting a Kuiu rain jacket, but am having a tough time deciding which to get. I am leaning towards the Chugach because it is lighter weight, and is said to breathe really well, and seems a little heavier duty than the Ultra. Don't think I need to go as heavy as the Yukon, but looking for opinions. Does the jacket keep you dry after being in the rain all day, for multiple days? How does it hold up in the brush? Just curious.

I've been using my Chugach rain gear for 3 years now, and it hasn't leaked yet, even busting brush.

I have the Guide jacket, vest, and pants and merino long sleeve and 3200 Icon Pro. Being a tall guy and somewhat of an athletic build (6' 6" and 190lbs), their stuff fits well and is great quality. I love the pack too. I have been chasing for a pack that will fit me well and finally found it with Kuiu. I have had the Badlands 2200 and Eberlystock's Blue Widow but was never satisfied with the way the fit. I would recommend Kuiu to others. As mentioned by others, I would order ASAP. I typically order stuff from them after hunting season so I'll have it by next season.
-
Thanks for the info 7mag, sounds like a good jacket.
-
50 dollars for a t shirt? The people of Dongguan and that rich kid from Cali. thank you
-
I was really excited about trying kuiu, when I was able to finally afford a piece I waited 4 month on back order and finally cancelled my order. Was very disappointed. :dunno: seems like great stuff though.
-
Ya a friend of mine at work had the same thing happen. Poor management I wonder how much business they've lost... Does anyone know where it is made? If it's made here in the USA I will probably look into it deeper. But I'm not paying high dollar for Chinese made mark up stuff.
-
It is manufactured overseas.
-
I was about to place a order today but found this thread. I went up to sportmens warehouse and got sikta gear can't wait forever for gear you need next month. I was look forward to x mas in August.
-
Seems like Sitka and First Lite are the way to go based on these super long back order times. Ordered a FL puffy today, said it was in stock.
-
I'm done with Kuiu until they can keep product in stock. Their stuff is good, not great. I shredded my attack pants on a deer hunt, the brush ate them up. Super down hoodie is great, chugach rain coat is very nice but loud. Merino wool first layer is nice but Icebreaker has everyone beat in this category.
-
I know my chugach coat is far quieter than sitkas and the quality is great compared to the sitka stuff . Everything I own and my wife the stitching is coming out
-
I finally got my gators I ordered 3 months ago, still waiting on the Guide Jacket! I have the Guide Pants, some merino base layers, beanie and neck gator. I like all of the hear I have, just don't like waiting for months to get it! Hoping my jacket shows up before I leave for MT, otherwise it might be back to Sitka! :bash:
-
I finally got my Guide Jacket after 6 months! Very frustrating to wait that long, but it was worth it.
-

When did you get it? They have been telling me they are "waiting on a shipment" for months!
-
The Attack pants are a no brainer.
I'd pass on the base layer stuff and get first lite.
I have the first lite rain gear as well, half the price of kuiu.
I'm not sure about the guide jacket......I run a Cabelas or REI fleece for that layer.
Midway has some of their brand stuff on clearance. The soft shell is nice but noisy, and I like their polyester base t-shirt.
I have the kuiu 1/4 zip long sleeve lightweight shirt. It's pretty nice.
Can't say I've ever found one brand that covered all the bases with #1 choice items. I mix and match.
Cabelas makes a pretty good pants, microtex I think, as does first lite (kaibob).
-
I love the attacks. I have the guide vest and jacket, merino base layers, and the 3200 icon pro pack, love it. Going to get the chinook pants, and some more layers shortly.
-
They have actually improved their base layers over the last two years. I love the zip on and off long underwear bottoms. You can bust butt to your glossing spot and in 2 minute or less without taking your boots off, have your long underwear zipped on to stay warm. Gotta move again? Unzip them and take them off in 10 seconds. Pretty cool design.
-
i wear the SITKA :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:

I'm on the kuiu website right now and it says that the attack pants and guide jacket are in atock
-
I use a mix of Sitka and Kuiu products. I think Kuiu has superior merino base layers and insulating layers. I really like the KUIU superdown hooded jacket. It's lighter and warmer than my sitka kelvin light. I'm grateful for both companies and the diverse set of clothing options they provide to the hunting community.
KUIU's entire product line will be 30% off starting 11/18. Inventory levels may be pick and choose. But great opportunity for budget minded shoppers who want top notch mountain quality gear.
I will be picking up some more merino layers and trying out their bino harness.
-
I've got a handful of Kuiu gear. Some I like, some not so much. Love my chugach jacket, tiburon and peloton shirts. For merino base layers I far prefer first lite. As a rule I don't order from them if it's not in stock. Can't say I'm a fan but understand supply chain isn't easy to figure out for a quick growing company.
-
I really wished there was a store of nothing but camo all makes sizes etc one stop shop try it all one get what you want

It doesn't appear that anything is marked on sale. Am I missing something?

are the ship dates really up to 6 months? isn't there store in N California?

The sale started today for the "insiders" club. Starts tomorrow for the general public.

Yes, on back order items it could be much longer than 6 months. I waited nearly a year to get a pair of gaiters. Won't do it again. Now I only purchase items that are in stock. In stock items have always arrived to me in 3-4 days.

I ended up going with Kuiu. Luckily everything I bought was in stock and I recieved within a week of being ordered. I was very lucky. I wore most of my gear on a scouting trip for elk in super windy, snowing, and cold conditions. It was amazing the difference it made between the gear i have worn in the past. At first I was in disbelief because of the clothing being so lite and thin. In my mind im thinking i just spent all this money on something that wont even keep me warm. It performed exactly how it was supposed to. Snuck right up on a beded down Spike bull, 9 mule deer does, and a nice 4x4 mule deer. I stayed warm and dry the whole hike without overheating. Like someone else spoke of the merino base layer bottoms are freaking awesome. i love how they designed them to be taken on and off so easy. the gear I ended up with is:
ICON Pro 5200
Ultra Merino 145 Zip-Off Bottom
Teton Rain Pant
Teton Soft Shell Jacket
Teton Insulated Jacket
Teton Rain Jacket
Ultra Merino 145 LS Crew-T
Ultra Merino 125 SS Crew-T
Peloton 200 Zip-T Hoodie
Attack Pant
It does have a very athletic fit and I am 5'8" so the 32" pants are a little on the long side which means ill just have to take them in to be hemed up. Great product though and i cant wait to try everything out Friday on my first archery elk hunt.
-
I ordered the gators a couple weeks before elk season. I got them a few days before we left. I had my doubts about them though. They seemed to be so tight, but once they were on I never knew they were there and they were dry and quiet. I was teased though for looking like a WWI infanty guy.

None of the good stuff is made here in the US. That's all the high quality gear, kuiu, firstlite, and Sitka. Kuiu gear is really nice stuff, all of it!

Teased by the guys with water pouring down their boots...
-
I guess I've had the opposite experience of everyone else. I've gotten all my kuiu gear within 3 days of ordering it. I like everything that I have so far and it has lasted a lot longer then my Sitka and core4 stuff that keeps falling apart. I will say first lites wool is way better than kuius or anyone else's for that matter, but I prefer my kenai puffy over the terrible zippers on first lites puffy. Just got a Yukon jacket during the sale last week and it fits good and I am already putting it to the test.
exo, stone glacier, kifaru, kuiu, mystery ranch, can't really go wrong on any of those packs though.
-
Not to waken the dead, but Im going to be using this thread for reference on hopefully soon to be purchases, Memorial day is offering 20% off checkout over 300$ which is easy to meet.
I like my kifaru back, thinking im gonna run Kuiu for my clothing. Just picked up a brand new pair of Yukon rain paints for 130$, cant beat that price. So ill be running those with yet to be decided layers under them.
Probably pick up some attack pants, seems to be everyone's favorite.. I stomp alot of tall wett grass so I figured the Yukons and some gaitors will do well.
-
The newer Attack pants with the side vents are my favorites, though they could have deeper front pockets.
The Nuyarn merino stuff is all they claim it to be. I wish they'd come up with their own boxer briefs.
I like the gaiters for the most part, but the little fold/clamp buckle on the top was evidently a short sighted cool-guy BS afterthought and should be replaced immediately by a good seamstress with a high quality Fastex male/female clip together buckle design. Trust me on that one!

They do have they're own boxer briefs, they just came out with them this year. Extra thick double cuffed legs so they dont ride up.

I got the Yukon Rain Jacket which is awesome and definitely holds out the rain/snow. I use it as my outer layer on cold mornings, but generally it is in my backpack for rain/snow. Because that Jacket is a little heavier than any rain jacket i've used in the past, i opted to not buy the guide jacket since the Yukon could double as both with a good base layer. I normally use the Kenai insulated jacket under the Yukon if its cold, otherwise just use the Kenai as my everyday outer layer on mild temp days with a light under layer. I purchased a peloton full zip as well and love it as a mid layer.
I also have the guide gloves which work well on mild temp days when you need a little extra to keep the hands warm, otherwise i use the Northstar glove which is warm and holds out the water.
I also have the Chugach rain pants which are cheaper and probably just as good as the Yukon rain pants. After owning the merino wool zip off bottoms, i would opt and get something better for the price.
I think the gear is as good as Sitka, and cheaper. Definitely worth being comfortable hunting in bad conditions. Too many years of being cold/wet made me pony up the money for a better hunting experience.

Yes, I saw those and should have clarified. I want to see KUIU come out with Merino boxer briefs. I don't care what's on it, plastic in the pits and crotch is a recipe for smelling like rotting corpse after a couple days of backpack hunting.

at 2:15 He cover's why he chose the material he did over merino. Seems he has no plans of ever running merino for boxer briefs.
-
I just got my two pair of briefs in, they are extremely comfortable around the house. Gonna do a 5+ miler tomorrow to test them out. As a side note Exofficio boxers are synthetic, comfortable and well liked. Both should dry fast so giving them a quick scrub and air dry should be no problem.
-
OK did my test hike with these today. Holy cow, going to purchase a couple more pairs. Overall impression, awesome fit, max comfort, and outstanding wicking ability. Got back to the trailhead and was dry. Wore me Exo's last weekend and head to head the Kuiu's win. Also I pushed it today a little. Added 50#'s to increase the calorie burn.

My only Kuiu is my neck gator and pack, both I love. However, to be honest I've found probably by far the best pair of pants that are none of the brands you've mentioned...in fact they are not hunting pants. I bought a pair of climbing pants by Stoic off Steep and Cheap and they are the bomb! The material beads water and dries quickly, is stretchy and the stitching and reinforcement are great. One nice small feature is the double snap which allows you to add liners underneath without feeling like you're going to bust out of your pants or when you get towards the end of your hunt and you've lost 10-15 pounds and need to make them a bit smaller to keep them from going down around your ankles. My only complaint about Kuiu is the fact that they didn't offer to fix a pair of pants that my brother in law dropped over 200 for when they tore at a seam. He even waited 6 weeks to get them. That is crap customer service in my book. I still feel the best clothing for the high hunt are mfr. that more backpacking/hiking based then hunting and most of them have a no questions asked repair warranty.
-
I've got a few Kuiu items. The only thing I ever had to wait on was a few dry bags when they messed up my order. They were very helpful though in fixing the problem and even followed up with me a few times to make sure everything was cool. I only order items that are in-stock and have never waited. I just ordered a Peloton 240 full zip hoodie and the 145 Marino base layer top and full zip bottoms. Got them on there Memorial Day sale and save some coin. Got them all within a week of ordering. Love the fit of the hoodie. Fleeced backed and is super comfortable! I'm a fan of there clothing, fits well, and its a bit spendy, but nice quality In my opinion. I've also got a Icon-pro 7200 which I also got on sale at 30% off. Really happy with that pack for the price as well. I've learned to get on-line early during there sales and get my order in asap before items become sold out..

Figured I'd resurrect this thread... How do you like the Peloton 240 so far? I'm looking at buying a couple of layers for the modern season, looks like most are in stock. One thing I hate is being overdressed when I'm on the move. I sweat a lot, and would much rather have the option of removing layers as needed. I purchased some First Lite merino base layers the other day and won an Ebay bid on some Attack pants recently, so I'm off to a good start. I would like to get a lighter shirt, maybe one of the Teton Zip-T's or one of their ULTRA merino crew shirts for muzzy elk season to go over the base layer. I will plan on using them during deer season too if there's any warm weather, but the Peloton 240 looked great for when the weather gets a little more crisp. If it rains, I'd just slip my rain layer over the top.
I was on the fence about the Guide jacket since it seemed like a good option for when I'm glassing out in the elements, but the weather never seems to get horrible enough in October to warrant buying something that insulated, even when I'm up at 5,500 feet. If it did get bad, I'd just assume layer around the Peloton and use my rain jacket as a shell. I'm not camping out in the woods and will be trekking in and out of both of my elk and deer spots every day, so I don't need any of the heavy duty gear for extended backpacking trips. Any recommendations?
One thing I can say I don't like about Kuiu, is that I wish they had more hoods on some of their lighter jackets. I know I said I get warm out there, but I like having the option to put my hood up when I stop to glass to keep that wind off my neck.
Cheers

Cheers
The guide jacket is one of my favorite day hunt pieces. I don't use it on backpack hunts though.

You don't get too hot when you're moving around? My buddy was telling me he gets a little too warm in it, even in the middle of October. Appreciate the input.

For hiking, yes. Still hunting, no. If has pit zips to help regulate temperature, and its not real heavy.

I wouldn't bother with the guide jacket. I run the 145 merino, Kenai, attack pants, and raingear. Some combination of that system works for everything from hot and sunny to dumping snow. :twocents:

Guide jacket is one of my favorite items along with their gaiters.

Just got back from a hunt and I wore my Guide pants with 240 base layer on top only and 210 pelotonand down vest worked great while hiking then then took off vest and wore super down jacket while sitting. Next couple days I wore the bottom base layer also but wore my alpine pants over that. The vents on the side of both pants worked great on letting heat out. They both were the most comfortable pants I've worn the only thing I'm going to change is a set of their Teton rain gear for over. Because my butt got wet riding on back of side by side on way back to camp

I should add that I often pack in, and the guide jacket is just too heavy to carry around in my backpack. May be perfect for a dayhunter who is less weight conscious though.

Bump for any updates.. I havent really found a use for the guide jacket. If its dry I prefer something lighter or loftier and more breathable . If its damp the chugach raingear goes on. Use my Teton jacket more than anything but mostly for everyday, around camp or road hunts. Too warm to hike in.

I've got the guide jacket and pants for two seasons now, and I put them on once. Maybe twice. I mostly run merino base layers, with the peloton 240, then add the chugash if it's wet. I wear the gaiters most all the time. Especially when it's damp out or I know I'll be bush whacking. I really like the alpine and attack pants as well.

I wear a mix of first lite and kuiu and the setup works great for me. A must in my opinion is the guide jacket, kuiu guide gloves, merino beanie and the down puffy is great but it doesn't breathe at all. Created a lot of sweat when it was very cold in Idaho and I had to hike a lot. mix and match to get the best comfort is what I recommend. Have a good day!

Guide jacket with puffy would not be something to walk in for sure !

I just had the puffy on with my base layer, no guide jacket over the top. But I was packing a good amount of weight around too.
