The boys are back in town. I knocked a big bull down the first day, ruining Idabooners camping trip. Details to follow as soon as we get recovered from the journey. Thanks for all of the positive thoughts from everyone. My nerves were a bit frayed, but things came together. lots of FUN memories. Little short on pics as I didn't want to screw up the bulls too badly before I hunted them, but got to see some gorgeous animals and scenery.
I'll get the details soon!
-
Congrats! Can't wait to see the pics and hear the story.
-
You tease, at least throw out an estimate as to the score. Come on dude, I've been wondering how it went.
-
SWEET....way to go. waiting impatiently for the story and pics.
-
SWEET....way to go. waiting impatiently for the story and pics.
:P Thats not fair you tease. I want pictures of you trying to cape that thing out for life size.... How far did you get befor you said to hell with it? Or did you actually get it caped out for a life size?
-
Congrats!!! WTF no pics?
-
Were waiting...... At least give us a little, starting out with the big bad bull was........
-
Still working on pics. Lots of things to get done before I can get em ready. The bull grossed 336 and netted 333 (332 4/8). I got him with the longbow.
-
Way to go man! I knew you would pull it off. I'm also waiting impatiently for the story and pics.
-
congrats, get the pics up. I ran into your wife thursday at work and asked if you smacked one, she said you told her you got a good one.
-
Well, heres one for you at least.

Great Bull Bone.... He is a MONSTER.
Are you going to home taxidermy him?
-
NICE! Well done Bone!!! That's a great bull, and a great pic. Can't wait for the full report!
-
WOW everyone's scoring some nice animals. Well done and nice hat :hello:
-
Thanks!!! I didn't get a chance to get Idabooner out there to get a picture of us both in our hats, but he proudly wore it. Here he is totally enjoying camp, mixing his mountain music with our camp pets which didn't seem to mind his playing as they kept bugling away.

We left 3am Wednesday morning. I made it to about Kirkls house when I realized I left my hunting boots on the front porch. I flipped a quick u turn and drove by Slenks house, a "short cut" back home. Then it was on. We got into Boise about 9 in the morning, and after great thought, decided to pick up yet another pair of boots at Cabelas. I've never been there before, but didn't have time to really look around. I cashed in some points I had built up on the cabelas card and came out with a fresh pair of "free" mountain hunters. the drive was on. We got 12 mpg pulling the trailer, so every 12 miles, I thought there goes another 3 bucks. We made it down to Salt lake before the first mishap. In 7 lanes of traffic on the freeway, I blew a truck tire. Apparantly I ran over some roadkill and managed to shove a vertebra through one of my 10 ply tires. I took an extra spare, but wanted that for in the woods. We found a Les schwab, but of course the didn't have a tire. There as a Les Schwab in Provo and they did, so thats where we headed. That cost us a bucnh of time, but after that it was over the Wasatch mountains and into the Utah desert. We made it 900 miles then right before dark made camp next to a Railroad track out in the desert. We were up at 5 and back on the road. We made it to arches National park right at sunrise. Beautiful country. There are some really neat rock formations in that part of the country, but for the record, the Utards can keep most of that country. It just doesn't stack up to our country.

Anyway, I never did find my tag, so we had to be to Albequrque by 5 pm as it was Friday. We made it at 330 pm. Nothing like being downtown pulling a trailer in Rush traffic. That took forever as their computers were down and a bunch of folks never got their Antelope tags. Th line was out the door and down the block. It made me think of our WDFW. We were back on the road, and with another 800 miles under our belt, we pulled into my hunt unit.
-
Speaking of antelope tags, I wish I had one in my pocket. I'm not much at judgeing them, but we saw a couple I would have loved to ave shot. Idabooner got to see his first Antelope, so that was cool.

Awesome pics and adventure Bone, the pics by the campfire are priceless.
-
It was dark when we pulled in. We were near a river and there were lots of bugs and frogs and I couldn't hear a blasted thing. We headed up the mountain and came out on top of a ridge. the sky was gorgeous. It was a good spot to stop for the evening. We grabbed our bedrolls and got ready to nab some sleep. I grabbed the bugled and ripped one. Instant answer back. He was a long ways away. I kept at it, and he was on his way. Booner was laying in his sleeping bag and I was kneeling beside him when I brought him screaming in. He winded us right at the edge of the mag light. Then I went to sleep after monitoring an awesome meteor shower. I awoke in the night to a set of antlers over my head. I didn't have m glasses on, but could still see bone. I managed to slip my eyes on, and about that time booner rolled over and the bull slipped off into the woods. The next morning, I unhooked the trailer and headed up the road for a scouting mission to find a better camping spot. At 7500 feet, I found the perfect spot. There was a logging road here. I worked my wa a couple hundred yards down it and let a bugle rip. Instant scream back about 100 yeards down the hill. I beat t back down to the truck and picked u the trailer and Idabooner so that we could claim our spot. I was thinking about Jackelope at this point. I know he wanted big bull pics, but I didn't want to educate my quarry.
It didn't take long and our camp was up. Since we had th trailer, I brought the big wall tent I had picked up this summer. Hotel Kikendall was born. Booner and I then hit the road and began driving some of the outskirts of our unit. Straight up the road from camp a couple Javelina ran across the road. I tried to nab a picture of them, but only woods showed up. It was beautiful there. The monsoons were over and everything looked like out spring. Flowers were blooming that we see in April and May. There were huge pines, oak, and juniper at 8000-9000 feet. Afer scouring the unit, we determined that we were in the right area. More my kind of hunting country. Remember there was a hunt going on at the same time we were scouting.
There is a Javelina in this pic somewhere, but you can get an idea of what it was like.

I chose the steep heavier timbered country over the more open mesas. I was more familiar with the big pines and fir than the open Junipe stuff. I was listening to and talking to about 7 different bulls when I took these pics. I had bulls below me and above me. I had three days to scout. the bad thing was the bulls were prime and hot now. they were in the part of the rut where they were challenging each other and gathering cows. This is the best time to be elk calling. A warden stopped by and talked for an houror so, and he said the second season was nocking them dead. We saw several nice bulls going down the road. There were 10 in front of the taxidermy shop in the small town that we went to to get gas.

So I get back to camp from scouting and "my elk" is talking. About that time some other guys way down the ridge start bugling. I'm ashamed to admit this, but I didn't want them to screw up "our bull". I grabbed the call bearmanric made for me and hit the trail, camera sitting in the front seat of my truck. I had no intention of calling this guy in. I gave a couple blows, and here he comes. I'm standing behind a tree in a white t-shirt and levis. the next thing I know, this 8x9 370 bull steps out at 20 yards. I guess that saved his life for the night. I slipped out and he continued his maddog bugling. This brought another bull down the ridge, and as night fell we had two bulls screaming at each other, one about 50 yards on one side of camp and one on the other. We finally went to bed, and I layed there listening to them scream insults at each other and ripping up trees. Here is one of the rubs we woke up to in the morn.

That sounds pretty exciting. I can't wait to get into archery hunting during the rut. I pass on archery elk this to do one last modern hunt with my dad. Trying to get him into archery. Sounds like everything feel into place once you got there. Congrats.
-
Its insanely fun huntingnut.
I patterned bulls for the next couple days. each day the bulls grew more and more quiet. The day before the hunt started, I figured my bull out. I had him walk by screaming within 20 yards of me with his 10 cows. I made it back to camp feeling pretty confident. I was really nervous when we crawled into the tent. That night the camp bull was back and was literally standing in fron of our wall tent bugling at us. i chose to go after "my bull" and headed up the mountain. All was quiet with NO bugles. I climbed the 1000 feet up to 9,000 as fast as I could. I was in position right at light, and on que, here he comes. His head was low and he was in the lead. Just as the day before, he turned to rub a tree and I released on him with the Sapphire Hawk longbow. I told booner that I would use it for the first three days and the compound for the last three. He adjusted his shoulder just as I released, and I hit the should blade. This can be devistating. The large two bladed head split the blade and got into one lung. The bull charged ahead bout 30 yards then went down, got up and started thrashing things. He went down again, then tried to get up. I had one shot at him and I took it. I put an arrow through his jugular. That was enough. He bled out. From there the work began. As I was cutting him up, another two bulls and cows came through the saddle I was in. Then about 20 minutes later, two more came through with their cows. One was a bit bigger than mine. Oh well....next year.

Congrats
Awsome story and pictures.
Nothing like a hunt like that to get the blood moveing .

I caped him out. I had to laugh that I was thinking about doing a lifesize mount. The bees and flies were horrible. I'm not sure If I will mount him or not. I really don't have the money or the room, but I suppose that has never stopped me before.
-
great looking bull, awesome scenery, good times.
-
Nice Bull!!! Congrats!!!

Great bull and great story and pics! Its awesome when after getting a good tag and all the prep and planning, it works out as good or better than hoped for. Good job especially with a real stick and string! I say mount him up. Save a hundred bucks a month and by the time its done you will have the money to pay for him. nwhunter
-
Excellent, Excellent, Excellent, think I'm going to like this Elk hunting stuff....... Great animal and congradulations on a very fine trophy...............
-
Congrates on a great bull!!!! You da man!
-
great bull, congrats. thanks for sharing the story and pics.
-
Congrates there "bone". Looks like a great bull!
-
Bone since you seem to be low on space to hang a mount like that, I am offering you a wall in my living room just for that gorgeous bull. I will even promise not to lie and tell people I got that myself........much,
LOL great job.
-
:chuckle:
-
Great story, and pictures. Congrats on an amazing bull!!! thanks for sharing!!
-
Thanks for sharing...grats! Looked like a blast!
-
Wow Bone, that bull is nice enough to make a whole hunting season (all species). What other premium hunts to you have this year?
-
I'm stuck with general stuff for the rest of the year EXCEPT........Idabooner drew a late season buck permit up in the Methow. Camp Kikendall will resume Halloween night for the opener on the first. We will be giving it hell for all the time allowed until there is a big buck down. I'm really looing forward to it. Camera will be in hand, but I will be concentrating on getting Booner in front of......well a booner if possible. If he scores early then I will be off to Idaho for some deer action. His hunt has priority. Since we got back so early, I'll be going back to work tomorrow, and will be able to cash some vacation out to pay for some of our last big hunt. I'd rather be hunting thatn working tomorrow, but if it gives me another chance to get out then HUNT ON!
-
nothin like elk hunting........ way to go.
-
Dandy!!!!
-
Nice bull and congrats! I need to catch up on my internet junk, my computer went TU and I havnt got a new one yet.
-
Well done, looks like idabooner has having one heck of good time also.
-
Congrats on the nice bull!!!!
-
Thanks everyone again for the kind words! I mean that. you guys were a priority on this trip. Dad and I talked alot aboutthis site, different threads, pics etc, the whole trip. Nothing like a roadtrip. I'm very happy to share it with you all. i was disappointed that I didn't get more elk pics. It just didn't work out in the strategy game.
Here is one.....I'm not sure I mentioned that we took the big tent. The real reason was if the monsoons were still going, I wanted Dad to be comfortable, and myself. the real real reason was that I could put him on one side of the tent and his snoring would't get to me as bad. truth be told thoug, I think I snored more this trip than he did. At least when I could sleep. Its hard wth bulls bugling in the camp.

-
dandy bull Doug and sounds like you had a good time.
-
Bone, thanks for sharing..................great story and great bull.
-
That is a gorgeous bull! Sounds like a good hunt all around--Road trip, out in the field with dad, great bull. All good things. Sounds like I need to switch to bow hunting!!!
-
Awesome bull bone, congrats!
-
Awesome.... especially w/ a longbow!
-
Great story and bull Bone! Stoked that it all worked out and you had a sweet experience. I hunted across the road from 16D last year...we had a couple nights where they kept us up, but sounds like they were much hotter when you got in.
Quick question...obviously you were on the bulls from the minute you drove in...how did you decide where in the unit to start the search? That's always a tough part of a new unit, but sounds like you didn't have any down time at all.
-
A good hunt. Must be the happy hunting grounds. Big bulls right in camp. What could be better?
-
MAN!!!! CONGRATS!
Thats a sexy bull! I hope you end up mounting him! I believe I could kill 30 bull elk and still find room for that bull on the wall. Even if I had to buy more wall...lol
nice story and pics!
-
Congrats man, I was hoping for that same kind of action on my hunt but it wasn't happening... Great bull!
Michael
-
Sorry your hunt didn't work out Michael. Hopefully you had a good time with your dad.
Wacoues....
I try to do alot of map work before I go somewhere. In this case I bought all the USGS maps for the unit. Funny thing is, I accidentally missed one, and out of the two maps I would have used the most, that was the one I needed. Kind of ironic. Anyhow, from there I figured out about where I was going to go. Upon arrival, I tried to camp in the general area where I thought I would hunt. Mostly to save time, miles on the truck, gas etc. From there I scoped the whole unit and confirmed the type of country I am most familiar with hunting with. Most chose the open gorgeous stuff that folks could see in. I chose the nastiest, toughest crap I could come up with. I then spent a couple days in there patterning the elk of the area. Then when the opener was on, I was ready. NERVES FRAYED beyond all repair.
-
Very nice bull!!! Maybe someday a bull like that will walk into one of my arrows. Probably after 20 years of apply for tags in WA. :bash:
-
Hey Michelle.......................Working on the cape today. Wish me luck...the tanning process begins.
-
Make sure you drink your coffee first, those morning coffee jitters can cause a lot of rework time.
-
It soaked last night in the salt brine, re-hydrating it. Now I have to go get dirty. Did I mention how much I hate the ears. I think I will go with the bondo method, so I leave the cartlidge in. I suppose I should start a new thread about the whole process. I'm already the taxidermists worst enemy. I didn't turn the lips in the field. I just didn't have time. Salted the crap out of all of it and got it on ice. We'll see how she works. Those were some of those thoughts I was telling you about Michelle. I figured I could hear you cussing me, but real life was I had to get on the road. :P
-
Well done, looks like idabooner has having one heck of good time also.
Yes T-Roy I had a great time, I been tied up a couple days so excuse the late post. You younger guys and gals just don't know how much it means to an old duffer to spend a few days in the woods with your Son, every adventure is super. This hunt we spent 4 long days on the road, not a moment we weren't talking about something. Got to see my first antelope and several more, a lot of different and new country. We scouted together one day and the next couple days I couldn't cut the rough terrain like I used to, so I had a great time in camp enjoying nature. Boneaddict and I have always been very close, so shortly after day light I felt him release that arrow, even thou he was a couple air miles away. I started slowly breaking camp . When he came in after lunch I had the gear tent packed and other stuff gathered up so it didn't take long to get on the road with the meat.
If at all possible take your Dad out, even if just for a day, us old guys don't have many bright things to look forward to.
Thanks an awfully lot Doug for another great time together.
Idabooner
-
boneaddict
Congrats on the hunt , nice bull elk .
Idabooner
I know how you feel we have 4 sons that I don't get to hunt with near enough . Our youngest is bones age .
Luck to you both
Slenk
-
No Thank you!
I enjoy every second we have together. Its always fun having someone that is on the same page. You have always called me partner, and I am honored and priveledged to be that. Its fun to share things with you that you haven't experienced....kind of like paying you back for all the things you have shared wih me. Heres to drawing another great tag and to our next adventure. How many sets of antlers have we tied on the back of an old mule or Dodge truck? ..............not enough! See you in November for the NEXT big hunt. The thread will be titled Big buck down. Keep an eye out for it folks.
Thanks Slenk....I'll have to get you and your son out some day for some strong coffee. That is if you like getting your hands around some big antlers.
-
Hey Bone that would be great.
Slenk
-
You have always called me partner, and I am honored and priveledged to be that.
You were only a few minuets old, you rared your head up and looked me staight in the eye, I knew right then I had a partner for life.
-
Tremendous job..............Don't know what else to say...and with dad don't get any better than that! :IBCOOL:
-
:o You didn't split the lips? Oh your screwed now. Not going to be a hair left on that entire cape! ;)
Naaaaa, I will probably be alright! Though you can realy never tell when a cape is going to slip. Usually it is a suprise when it does. Proper field care is the best insurance you can have.
-
So far its solid. I'm on day three of pickle and shaving. The lips were hard to split with the salt dehydrating them as you would guess, even after re-hydrating. I haven't mastered the whole open mouth bugling either with tucking lips versu closed mouth if you know what I mean. As a professional, you would be appalled I'm sure. I did ok with getting it thinned out and the red meat out of the nose, lips mouth etc. I am proud of my ears this time. Much better than normal. I still managed to rip through the end of one. Just makes for bigger mess with the bondo.
-
bone,'
do you take pics as you progress? I caped my first deer last year and would like to experiment this year with a shoulder mount? Bought a video but its pretty hoaky!!!
-
I haven't.....could as long as Michelle didn't look. I'll be doing a deer or two in a week or two (hopefully a fresh one) and I will get some shots then.
-
:) Why don't ya take me up on my offer to bring that bad boy down here to my shop and let me show ya what I know. :P
-
My wife would hang me up by my swizel stick if I even mentioned it. :o
-
I guess if I was just another dude doing taxidermy than she wouldn't mind as much! Thats between her and you but the offer still stands!
:bash: I get tired of the wives jealousy thing. Thats why I can never find anyone to go hunting with. The wives always freek out like somethings gonna happen! It's either that or I get the feeling it's not the cool thing for women to tag along on a hunting trip.
-
Honestly she is jealous enough that I would hang even if she thought you were Bubba from Alabama. Once she found out you were a gal, she'd be doing some taxidermy on her own. I hear you though. I'm going to hit you up for some tips. I have some paint schedules I want to talk to you about, and I know I will run into issues with a few things on this bull that I would like to get your opinion on. Feel free to tell me to take a hike since I'm dipping into your business, but would really appreciate talking over things with you.
-
I have no problem giving advice and explaining how to do things. Some things you just can't explain and the easiest way is to be shown.
-
Look forward to the pics. Wish I was closer so I could get some one on one instruction. The buck I caped out last year, I actually did ok on. I am going to try and cape as many animals out this year for practice.
Michelle, do you offer class's ever?
-
I've been thinking about it.
-
I've been thinking about it.
No one that I know offers classes anywhere near Olympia. Mac used to but he passed a couple of years ago.
I would think you would get a few takers.
-
Got him shaved, but could have done more, and is tanning using the Mckenzie tan. He will go in the freezer tonight. My biorthday is coming up, so begging for a form and eyes for my present. I was going to do open mouth, but saw another that I really liked and might just go with it. Once I am back from chasing moose, I'll scan a pic of the form I want. Still trying to decided bugling or not. Makes it much easier if I don't.
-
Mckenzie tan is that like a lutan-f tan? I used vandykes lutan-f this spring on some pelts and has impressed how well they turned out. lutan is a 3 day minimium pickle also.
-
Very similiar I'm sure. I haven't used the lutan F. I used another out of Research Manniquins, but can't remember what it was.
-
No they are not the same. McKenzie Tan is a Brush on tan. Lutan F is similar to Bruce Rittels EZ-100. They are both an Immersion Tan.
-
Why can't i see the pictures boneaddict posts. They all show up as white boxes with a red x in the middle on ever post i have looked at by him. GRRRR
-
try these...or let me know and i'll e-mail them if you want.
bone's out chasing bullwinkle for a few days.
-
Awesom bull I sure hope to harvest one like that some day. congrats
-
Thanks Jack.....I'm not sure Lets hunt. Only thing I can think of is that your server or firewall blocks photobucket. I have ran into that with my firewall on some pics folks put on here.
The other Tan system I used was Larry Bowmans. It worked pretty well. Not sure why I changed actually. It pickled for 24 hours, not three days. I think it retained a smell though. hmmmmmmm
-
he pm'ed me and let me know he could see them as attachments. the same thing happened when i posted nwhunter's bull pic's. some people couldn't see them, so i posted them as attachments and then they could be seen by everyone.
i have no clue why?
i think it's a server thing, but don't know.
-
Thats a Dandy! congrats, beautiful trophy, great kill and memories that will last a lifetime! Thanks for the story.
-
Beautiful bull, and thanks for taking the time to tell the sotry, I throughly enjoyed it. How did the calls work, sounds like they are well made and make a sweet sound, is that the case?
-
Thanks Machias. The calls worked great. They are a little loud and I had to work on toning them down, but they worked great. No others in the woods like them, which is the reason I took them. I left one on the mountain, and Rick was kind enough to make me another. I called in quite a few bulls this fall with them, including a monster over in the Selkirks. I wish I would have taken them with me on my deer hunt as I ran into three cats up there and I would have loved to put the hurt on them by using these calls for what they were designed for. I heard Jackelope nailed a coyote with one on the opener. Yes, these calls work great and are very well built. Even if you don't ever use them they are a cool addition to a display. Those cats were close as it was snowing and the tracks were fresh. I know you are against shooting those females, but I would have loved to have shoved one of those sharp sticks down her throat.
-
I heard Jackelope nailed a coyote with one on the opener
that i did...lunch break on day 2, about 20 minutes of calling and across the field he came. mr triple shock gave him a rude awakening.
-
Very nice bull! Great story. Were did you get your wall tent? I'm just getting back into the hunting scene after my father past away a number of years ago :'( and am getting stocked up on my gear and reloading equipment. I take my boys out once a year for late deer season but thought it was time to honor what my ole man taught me and get back to the hills more often. Thanks
-
I scored it this summer from a friend. He just wasn't using it and the girlie friend didn't like the smell of canvas. I got one heck of a deal and am enjoying it immensly. I believe he purchased it at Sportsmans Wharehouse. Its a Montana Canvas.
-
great bull! and great story, Congratulations
-
Its just about time for an official measurement. Oh Lance, I have a moose, elk and a deer for you to measure if you are monitoring this. :)
-
Bone , Are you going to get your bull measured before the puyallup show. I would like to get my official score sooner than that but I have to get the horns to the taxidermist this friday so probably won't get a chance to. I will be coming over to Seattle with the horns Friday any ideas for a scoring get togethor? Let me know Scott
-
Lance lives here in Yakima, so I will be trying to meet up with him. I'll probably not even go to the Puyallup show. I took my moose in to the Yakima show, but those guys are so busy, they didn't ahve time to stretch for an official measurement. He has probably shrunk another inch since then, but oh well. As soon as the holidays are over, I'll start pestering Lance. The bull becomes eligible about the 19th of this month I guess. My deer has to wait until January.
-
HEY MICHELLE or Bucklucky.....do you guys have a preference of what eyes you like to use. I was about to order the 250 IQ ones out of Research. ARE THERE ANY BETTER ones or ones you guys like to use?
Hopeing to get him scored this week. I'll keep you guys posted.
-
Well for deer I normally used Aspheric eyes from McKenzie. I am not quite pleased with them so I am going to try a couple different lines this year. I have a couple pickedout I just can't remember the names.
Are you looking for elk or deer eyes?
-
Actually both. I am putting in an order for about 3 sets of deer eyes, an elk set for this guy, a bobcat and a fox. You have all of these competition eyes now with the whiteband, but most animals you don't see the white band on for the most part, so seems like extra for nothing almost. I saw a mount that someone got back from the taxi, and they had the white band in the wrong spot. Looked funny.
-
OFFICIAL SCORE IS IN
Lance came out for the measuring marathon. Only thing he got out of the deal was a bite of Huckleberry crisp, and more bone stories. We started with the moose, then the elk and then my buck.
The elk faired well. It was very happy with his score. Grossed 340 and netted 335 4/8

-
Nice. What about the Moose and deer?
-
Which eyes did you order? Did you get them in yet? Which ones do you like?
-
Great!! nice bull Doug!
-
Check out the moose and deer sheets on their thread Michelle. I am going with the 250 IQ series. Putting in the order shortly. I'm pretty happy Ernie. My goal was a 300 bull, and to home home with a 340 was just awesome, especially with that longbow. I am very tickled! Now all I need is more wallspace.
-
Very nice Bone!
-
 You don't need more wall space you need a bigger house!
-
True story there. I am hoping to build a trophy room one of these days.
-
I got off work finally after multiple shifts and made it to the show. They were still working on the judgeing or figuring out the numbers. No ribbons were posted yet. I checked out a few of the top bucks and knew I was neck and neck with a couple. It looked good for the bull. I ran into Lance and got to BS with him for awhile. Then one of his friends brought in a big whitey to be scored for fun. I got to jump behind the counter and help him score that brute. That was fun. We got to vistit a bunch more. Lance must have thought I was about to pass out, so he scored me a dew. Busy place as they started distriuting ribbons. Pretty soon they put blue on the elk, and then a green. I got first place for Archery elk, and then Best of show for Archery. That came with a $200 gift certificate to Hammers here in town. I was ecstatic. There were some awesome animals. Several good ones from the Rez and another big one from benton. Anyhow YAHOOOOOO!

Then I had to wait patiently for them to sort out the deer.
-
Bone, great news & congrats too you my friend!
ElkNut1
-
Congratulations bone, it is well deserved. You had heck of a season this year.
-
congrats dude...well deserved for you and a great honor for the bull.
-
congrats :)
-
What a great story! Congrats on an awesome hunt and great pictures. Love the post.
-
Job well done!!! Congrats to ya Bone!!
-
THanks EVERYONE! It was one heck of a year. I've been celbrating ever since. Now I just need to lose about 30 pounds so I can do it again. I'm going to go shedding over there with Miles one of these days and I won't be able to get up the road bank. Dang this eating red meat and potatoes is good for ya. THANKS again everyone. I hope to have another story for you all next season.
-
so much respect for the long bow, both deer and elk you harvested this year where awesome, i didnt realize just how awesome they were until i saw them first hand at the sportsman show, i touched your elk, sorry :) i just had to, anyway this will be my first year of bow hunting, im going to be using my bowtech diamond though, im kind of going against my grain here because i was brought up on a bill stewart custom recurve i had made when i was 16, but i figure i'll get a few more animals before i start using that.
-
Congrats on the ribbons, that was truely an excellent kill.
-
Thanks guys! Jake... Best part of the whole show was watching a bunch of kids pose wiht the bull to have their picture taken. Mad e me pretty proud. Good job on picking up a bow for hunting. It doesn't matter, recurve, compound, all are fun and a challenge. You'll have a blast. Its a great time to be in the woods. Keep us posted on your hunt.
-
Well, its about time to fill up the tank and head to Montana to see what it has to offer. I wonder if I can dare dream to think about topping this guy this year. The camp will be a bit smaller though the pack seems to keep getting heavier and heavier.
-
I'm hoping my peaches hunt is as exciting as your trip last year. I have done some good scouting and am still scouting, but am getting nervous at the same time! There is the potential to be tons of good posts this fall. Best of luck to everyone. Post lots of pics!
-
Reread this one Doug and I had a quick question for you. I have been reading a lot about the single bevel broadheads. Were you using one when it split the shoulder blade? Everything I have read lately is making me consider switching, especially for my two-blade set-up.
-
Peaches Ridge will be an EXCELLENT hunt for you. New Mexico has nothing on it. I love that country and it has some great bulls. That is pure elk country. Mission, this was from NM. Montana is where I am headed this year.
Travis, this isn't one of the single bevel broadheads. The only two that I know are Zwickies and Black Widow. Zwickies or however you spell them are awesome heads. I do like the stingers though as I have little trouble with them being different from field points. They are very balanced and incredible at rippin a big hole.
-
Thanks I'll give'r heck for two weeks or until my legs fall off! As far as I'm concerened this is my hunt of a lifetime!! :IBCOOL:
-
Well Guys, keep an eye out for Big Bull Down II. Hopefully you'll see it in about a week, if not maybe 2 weeks, or worst case scenario 3 weeks. I'll do my best. New country, early season and I am about as in bad of shape as ever. Ugh. Sounds like the competetion for the Cup is going to be tough, especially with a big Caribou already on the ground from Archery288. Way to put the pressure on dude.
-
Good luck Doug...I'm sure you'll do fine!
-
We have faith in you Doug. Go kick some butt and get us lots of pics as well!
-
Congrats on your success! What a great hunt and thanks for sharing.
-
Really nice animal BoneAddict, walk us through the hunt as if you were reading the story and living in the moment. Like the morning cup of coffee, the weather, what the forrest smelled like and the friends you were with.
-
Wow NICE Bull u got. Congt!!! ;)
Mulehunter
-
Bone.
Good Luck, adrenaline will take the place of being a little outta shape thsi season!!!!
-
Nice bull!!!!! Congrats and thanks for sharing the pic.
-
Well guys, I left Doug up in the mountains yesterday after spending 3 days with him... I was trying to get him on a bull, funny thing was, he just kept getting ME on bulls! I had one yesterday at about 8 or 9 feet... head on, through a bush... Never got a shot opp!! Fun though.
If I hear from Doug I'll give an update.
Ernie
-
Thanks for the update Ernie :hello:
-
Agreed! Thanks for the update!
-
I'm hopin he nails a good one 8)
-
Well, I guess that explains why I never heard back from him about fishing... Hope you get a big one.
-
Nice Bull. What unit were you hunting? Were you bugling or cow calling?
-
Good luck guys and especially Bone for all of his hard work and dedication to posting so damn much on this site... :chuckle:
-
Talked to Bone today guys. He passed on a couple raghorns, saw a 280 a 300 and a 350 bull but couldn't close the distance....hopefully he'll get her done soon!
-
I hope to have much better stories for you guys soon. I didn't notch a tag in Montana . I don't know if I am done yet or not there. I hope not as it will be the first tag in 25 years or so that I didn't notch for an animal that I hunted for. I'd hate to start this year. I am hoping my reports help Hornseeker out in his quest this week for his bull. In the meantime, the ole hunting dog and I are going for another bull quest in Idaho. I'm a little pitiful on pics as I was seriously hunting, but I did manage a couple. Some good stories though. More time to tlak after I put this hunt together. Another new area, another epic adventure, and again with the Trad bow in hand. I think I am stacking the deck against me, but man is this fun. I really want to thank Ernie (Hornseeker) for his help. He really helped me with my hunt. If it wasn't for him, I'd probably be lost out in the big woods. Good luck this week Ernie, and I hope you save me one!
-
So Dad, Mom was wondering when you were going to stick around long enough to taxidermy some of these things you keep bringing home. :chuckle:
-
So Dad, Mom was wondering when you were going to stick around long enough to taxidermy some of these things you keep bringing home. :chuckle:
Oooooh... that's funny.
-
Gee thanks Lil. Wonder how she feels about yet another to the pile. :)
-
So where is this Montana bull you mentioned?
-
No bull dreamingbig. I only got my buck. Thats where I was. You can see it in the bones alta hunt thread toward the bottom.
-
So Dad, Mom was wondering when you were going to stick around long enough to taxidermy some of these things you keep bringing home. :chuckle:
I was thinking the same thig, LMAO! Yeah bone when you gonna get around to mounting that big bull?
-
When it warms up. :)
-
Mount it in the House where its warm :chuckle: I did ;)
-
The house is what I was talking about being cold. :chuckle:
-
:chuckle:
-
Doug,
You know that country you hunted over by West Yeller... Well...its open till DECEMBER 21st dude... they extended the season 3 weeks... A guy could have a whack at one hell of a bull that is emerging from his other dimension onto the winter range......
-
Screwed and glued........... (yeah I know my shop is a mess)

I've since adjusted his Bones just a bit and centered them just a bit better.

-
What form is that Bone?
-
Looking good!
-
Boy Bone, it's too bad you don't have any decent animals in your shop to work on.
-
Crap Charlie I'll have to look. Thats the problem having it laying on your garage floor for the last year.
Projects....oh boy do I have projects.
-
Doug your garage looks like one big project!!! :chuckle:
-
You ain't kiddin' there.
-
Very nice Bone, cant wait to see cape on that form...
Joe
-
I tanned the dang thing about a year ago. A...I hope it fits, B, I hope the hair doesn't slip. LOL
-
Well if it don't fit there is always the fun of doing the modifications to the form, that is almost as fun as running with a sharp pencil and tripping :P :P.. LOL
Cape should be fine, did you get it shaved down good??
Joe
-
Just came across the thread - Nice Utah Bull - What unit?
-
Modifacations and alterations is the fun part!!
-
I would just assume it fit. :P
It was close, and lost more hair than I like to in the tanning process. Nothing bad. Mostly it was the matter of it being 90 degrees on the day I packed him out and then the trek home. I salted the crap out of it, but would have liked to have had less meat and stuff still on the cape. It was a matter of what was more important, get the meat out and on ice and get headed for home, or do a perfect job on the cape. I had thought about doing a full mount. YEAH RIGHT. We'll see. I'll probably be wishing I had filled a couple of my elk tags this last fall. If I remeber right, I might have one spare cape in the freezer but it will be smaller. :chuckle:
-
it was NM unit 16, not Utah
-
I see NM, sorry - I was following your travel through NM and lost track in the story.
Congratulations - excellent Bull.
-
I've been dreaming about Utah, so maybe thats a good omen. We'll find out here in about a month. I'm behind in the points game since they just opened it up and I am in for deer in the Henrys along with a million others......fingers crossed.
-
Good luck on the draw.
Do you have the link to your other bucks and bull stories you mentioned - I wasn't able to find them (haven't looked very hard). The only one I followed were the tag you had this year (entiat or up that way).
-
here are a couple links

looking good cant wait to see the finshed product
-
Thanks for the links - I had read the Alta, but not the Big Buck Down. Good read - congratulations on the award - Nice Buck
-
Thanks Whacker. You too Travis. I believe Bowsandhose is probably going to snag it this year with his big Blues bull.
-
Yes, 380 if I remember correctly - that will be tought to beat.
got to start working now - enough reading about hopeful prospects for the fall.
-
I had read the Alta thread, but not the other one. Cool stuff 8)
-
Beautiful animal. Great story. At this risk of sounding like a dummy, what are the antler pcs hanging from your neck ? Are those an elk call ? Sure look cool.
-
Those are our own Bearmanricks predator calls. I traded him a couple sheds for some calls then took them down to NM with me. Everyone in the woods was using the hoochie mama etc. The elk were pretty callshy to them. soooooooo I used a secret weapon. His cow and calf elk sounds worked just fine. They are high volume calls (made for predator hunting) so I had to tone it down a bit. I figured it was good MOJO too.
-
that is a huge bull
-
that is a nice prong horn thanks for the pictures
-
I'd love to have a set of those calls. Trinkets like that pull my chain. Does he advertise them on here ?
-
Elksnout, he does advertise it is www.rrcalls.com
Joe
-
Nice, Big Bull congratulations.
-
Thanks guys. Watch for them elksnout. Every once in awhile he will post a batch of them on here, or you can pm him with your interest. Let him know what ones you are tlaking about as he has a bunch of different sounding ones.
-
Thanks guys. I just sent an e mail to him to purchase.
-
Is the mount done yet Bone?? Im getting sick of waiting :chuckle:
-
Good question. How is the mount going Bone?
-

Hey Charlie, I'm actually going to go out in the shop today to see if the mount is still there. Maybe even get the table cleaned off and check supplies to see if I can do something. Wonder how freezer burnt it is....
-
:lol4:
That made my day Bone !! You tanned it didnt you?? Should be fine ;) Might have to blow a foot of dust off the form and horns though :chuckle:
-
Am i gona have to come raid your freezer and garage to steal your horns and cape to get that thing mounted or what :chuckle:

Road trip. Sounds good to me. That's a damn fine animal, and to not have it on the wall by now. :'(
I was going to say I can't wait to see the final product. But I might have to. :chuckle:
-
Am i gona have to come raid your freezer and garage to steal your horns and cape to get that thing mounted or what :chuckle:
I think you might have too... Lets see that beautiful animal on the wall!
-
I figure if I bug him enough he will get er done..........maybee :chuckle:
-
I have three or four trophy deer and him to do. Might just have to pull an all nighter one of these days. I'm just hoping for healthy capes. Course I decided to tackle my first pedestal with him.
-
I figured I would move this thread. I think New Mexico could be the single best elk hunting in the world. Of course thats just my opinion. I need to start applying again. I know this is an old thread but its been buried for awhile.
-
Never gets old though, love reading good threads over and over and  all over my keyboard staring at the pics of horns.
-
WOW, is all I can say! This is my first time reading this whole thread. What a joy!!! Great job Bone and what an incredible experience to share with your Dad. Super Cool!!
-
Sooooooo..............a year and a half later...is the pedestal done yet?
-
Well.............No excuses. Nope. My cape is probably freezer burnt. I ran out of discretionary income. Its sitting right next to Idabooners buck I promised him.
