Title: Anyone else with an empty freezer?
Post by: DoubleJ on September 02, 2015, 11:50:46 AM
After not hunting last year, my freezer has one steak and 3lbs of burger left.  First deer I see this year that I think I can get 50lbs of meat off of is hitting the dirt.  One of these years, between my boys and I, we'll have enough meat in the freezer the following season where I'll feel like I can be a bit more selective.

Anyone else popping the first legal deer they see?

I'm down to soup bones in the freezer at this point.  I took a buck last year, so I think I will be more likely to pull the trigger on a doe this year (I hunt blackpowder).  The hide seems to disappear on nice fat does, and the animal becomes a walking set of backstrap, loins, and hams... hard to pass up!

Funny you mention this as I am opposite this season for once. I was going through some gear in my garage this weekend and noticed that my mom had unplugged my chest freezer...  :yike: Luckily only a few packages of steaks on top were thawed but were still plenty cold so I just brought them in to cook them up. I decided it would be as good as time as ever to defrost and clean that freezer so I transferred what was in there over to my upright freezer. I had no idea that I had as much left as I did. I am going to Wyoming and Montana for deer this year so I can be super picky as I have close to enough meat as is right now. I am lucky though in that its just me in my house so a deer lasts me a long time.

I have the same issue.  I've got a beef, a pig, an elk, and them some random deer left from a few years ago.  Add about a dozen salmon and dozen bottom fish and I don't really need to harvest anything this year.  It's a good problem to have!

Empty of steaks, yes. I do have about 30-40 pounds of ground meat in one freezer. With a trip to Wyoming coming up soon, I'm hoping to put at least two deer and two antelope in the freezer. So that should help to solve the lack of steaks problem. But only for a short while. We go through the steaks pretty quick.

I wasn't able to get out last year either for deer or duck season. My freezer currently only has 1 crab left, and now a few salmon I've put in. I need to get a deer this next month, unfortunately the area I used to hunt got developed.

Empty it is.

Don't shoot a doe yet!

Deer never seem to last all that long.  They really don't amount to all that much meat unless you shoot an exceptionally large one.

Good luck to everyone filling their freezer! This early wet weather keeps tricking me into thinking it is later in the year than it really is.

My girlfriend and I have a couple deer roasts and probably 6 lbs. of burger left. She does archery and I got the multi season tag for deer this year so i plan on being a little picky. If I have no luck, then there's always DOEcember :chuckle:

We have mostly steaks  and roasts left. I guess burger is the go to in our menu.

I've been think of the freezer situation too. Took a bull last year so had plenty early on. I'm used to rationing it to last. With a WY antelope trip coming up, elk only days away, and  the always archery doe tag possibly I should thin the freezer a bit. Nice problem to have I hope!

Nope....   8)  I'll probably give most of my elk away, if I get one.

I dug through the freezer a bit tonight and did find a few packages of steaks, some from 2013.   :o  So I guess we're not quite as low on meat as I had thought. But still, it will be nice to put a couple deer and antelope in the freezer in a couple weeks when we get back from Wyoming. I'm really hoping to put an elk in the freezer, or at least a half an elk. That would give us enough extra so that we could experiment with some different sausage recipes this year.

Got maybe 10 1lb packages of bear Italian sausage left of the bear my wife shot last year. Got a deer cape and a bear in there also. Maybe 8 packs of Girl Scout cookies also. Other than that my standing freezer is almost empty. I drew a peaches bull tag this year and my wife drew a Palouse buck tag. Hopefully by thanksgiving I can say I have too much meat in my freezer :chuckle:

Were out, and have been for a month or 2. I havent got a buck for 2 years straight. my son has been supplying the venison, and I did get a bear last year. We seem to eat them up quicker every year. I might be a little less picky this year, but I won't know until im in the moment. :chuckle:

I was out of steaks by March. I'm down to about 5 lbs of burger and probably a dozen trout and bass in the game freezer. If it's made of meat (and doesn't get chased off by a coyote again :'( ) it is getting put in the freezer.

Free to a good home. 1 upright freezer that had fresh frozen salmon, beef and venison. Just pick up. It's is only 4 years old. Should be able to change 1 part and have another perfectly good freezer.

I'm about out of deer, elk and beef but have a TON of salmon and steelhead left.  It's too bad that I don't eat salmon or steelhead.  Depending on how my daughter's and my hunting seasons go I might be putting her Grand Champion steer in the freezer before she can market sale it in the spring.  :chuckle:

Mines empty other than a couple salmon. Didn't get a deer last year. But I have a second deer tag this season so the first nice doe I see is getting a dirt nap, then I'll hunt for a buck.

With some luck I'll put an elk in the freezer in a week and a half.

Im down to huckleberries, and some trout I cought on the mighty Columbia, that is another reason im contemplateing on takeing a chance on being surrounded by unexscapeable fire rings, caused by some deralic trying to impress his children by roasting marshmellows or hot digaties. Which by the way , that brings to mind the Cajun twinkees , all u need is a propane burner and some kind of pan , few packs of arbys sauce , and your in fat city no matter where you are !!! Been doing that for years and no forest fires yet ! :bash:

We are the lowest we've been for as long as I can remember. I still have some deer and a good amount of last years elk (been eating away at the elk form the year before) but steaks have run really low, which I'm glad to see! My girlfriend has a cow elk tag and I don't plan on even bothering with elk this year, between her and my dads elk hunts I don't need the meat. I have a deer hunt in montana and a multiseason deer tag which I'm going to really have a hard time not tagging a two point on since all I basically have is early and late season to hunt this year with other hunts getting in the way.

Was going through my freezer and realized I totally spaced half of my deer meet was left, got about 7 summer sausage left and 4 packs of teriyaki sticks. Usually I just save a pack or two to snack on during early elk season while in camp. But both me and my wife totally forgot about it since it's on the bottom shelf of the freezer! And about 10lbs of burger left from my brother inlaws deer!

Anyone who finds themselves with a problem this season of not enough room in their freezer ....  :hello: :hello: ours is empty, I'd gladly take that burden off your hands!

How much can you take?!  I've been cranking out the meatballs for neighbors, making jerky until the dehydrator burned up, made some more pheasant dog food...and am still concerned that if we get two elk this year I won't have room in our three freezers for everything.  With only two of us we can't usually get it all eaten in one year.  Main reason I don't kill an elk every year anymore.

Was great for a few years when we had some Russian Mennonites with eight kids living next door.  They were always happy to take what we didn't use by the time next season came around.  But they moved last year.  So we will be looking for a new family to share with.  Maybe with one dog gone and another soon to be we can start having guests again. (stinky old dogs with medical problems really keep the friend visits down) Then you and Smoochy can come down for some BBQ and take some goodies back home with you.  Think we would enjoy that!

When/If I hammer a big bull in Utah I'll probably take 100# of old round steak to the butcher for Summer sausage.  That usually is welcome goodies by all of our local vendors.  Though that has gotten expensive :o  I will give you and Double J a call when/if we have that done!  Maybe we can make the Angry One happy by having a fluffy elk stroganoff party!  According to her that's my specialty.  Though it could be that she just likes to see me slave in the kitchen for five straight hours. :chuckle:

My freezer is never empty.  Between Halibut, shrimp and razor clams in the spring, Salmon, crab and Tuna in the summer and then deer and elk in the Fall it is just one big cycle.  I havent bought meat in over 8 years.  We know what we can eat and if we get behind on consuming something before that season starts then thats whats for breakfast lunch and dinner until its gone. I refuse to kill something else if I still have meat in there from last season.  It really helped once we started making all the different sausages and snacks to make it go faster.  Its hard if all you got is steak roasts and burger.  Also figuire out what you can eat and what you can't, then when the meat is fresh give away what you know you won't be able to eat.  It is poor taste IMO to go to someone and say hey will you take this "year old meat off of me so that I can go kill some more".

3 lbs of burger left. Focusing mostly on elk this season. Multi seadon elk tag in pocket. All of archery season to hunt. Desicions to shoot cow or hold out for my first bull  :dunno: shot cows but have been working hard for a bull for years. It feels like it's all coming together this year, scouting trail camera pics  etc. I know I'll
Have opertunities at cows. We will see if I can pass on them for chance at a bull... So excited it's ridiculous  :IBCOOL:

After not hunting last year, my freezer has one steak and 3lbs of burger left.  First deer I see this year that I think I can get 50lbs of meat off of is hitting the dirt.  One of these years, between my boys and I, we'll have enough meat in the freezer the following season where I'll feel like I can be a bit more selective.

Anyone else popping the first legal deer they see?
I want to shoot a buck this year but if I start running out of time and see a nice white tailed doe (which I doubt where I will be hunting) I will shoot one. I also have late season to hunt so we will see what happens. I have never killed an elk and that is one thing that needs to change.

I've only ever seen 2 elk in my life, a cow and a calf, in June.  I also want to shoot one.  I was going to go out this weekend but I'm not sure if I'll actually make it out or not.
