Been working on finding a load for my 264 win mag. It is a older tang safety ruger so the twist rate wont allow 140 bergers. Been trying 130 bergers and 129 sst hornady. Just wondering if anybody else shoots a 264 and what loads they have had luck with.

Hornadies with a double ogive to max capacity..

Benchmark is building me a 264WM that should be ready for pick up in a few weeks. I'm planning to use 140 Bergers and will ladder test Retumbo, Magnum and H1000 as a starting point. I'll let you know what I come up with.

With the factory twist i cant stabilize the 140 bergers. I have a load for 130 bergers that i can get about .7 group at 3210 fps. Wanting a little tighter but maybe its just me pulling the trigger that is keeping them at .7 and not tighter.

I have a Win. Model 70 made in 1965. It isn't pretty but it's a shooter.
130 Accubond
51.5 grs. IMR 4350
Fed 215M primer
Norma Brass @ 2.493"
OAL 3.235"
.303" @ 100

Thanks. Might give the 130 abs a shot. Any idea what speed you are getting with that load?

0.7 is pretty dang good for a factory. I would be happy and keep it like that. :twocents:

I didn't and haven't used a Chronograph on it. Per the Nosler manual using the same barrel length as the test rifle it should be right at +or- 2900. Pretty sure that it would tip a something over given the opportunity 8)

I can always try for better. It was real consitent. Only 14 fps spread over 5 shots. Maybe i should call it good but its always fun to try and get better.

I was thinking the same thing BB. Good speed, good accuracy, I'd say you are pretty much there. Maybe a slight change in seating depth or, 1/10 of a grain up or down might dial it in a fuzz tighter?

I could spare a bag of the 130's HH509 of you want to give them a try. I have few more 50 pc bags of SPS factory seconds with a cannelure. I would gladly send you a bag for what I paid for them. I just checked and they are out of stock on them right now. Send me a PM if you'd like to give them a try.

Mine will be a 1:8 twist so it should be able to handle the Bergers and the 160 Matrix VLD. The matrix 160 moving along at 3000 fps will be sweet if I can get it to shoot. I will also put together a partition load in case I ever want to use this gun for bear. I'll let you know what recipe I come up with for the partition.
-
If you can move the 160s at 3000 that would be a fun gun. Either way i look forward to hearing how the gun turns out. Im kinda jelous. Would love a custom 264 to shoot the heavier high bc bullets.
-
3000 with a 160 pill may be pushing things a bit for a 26" tube but I will soon find out. I'm hedging my bets that the 264WM using modern bullets and powders is going to shoot like a hot damn.

I had a load I shot for years until I ran it over a chronograph. Killed deer but wasn't giving .264 velocities. It was a 125 grain Nosler partition and 62 grains of old H4831. Back then there was a big discrepancy between "book velocity" and "actual velocity". Mine was supposed to be in the 3100-3200 fps range but only came out at 2835 fps. Might have been the one inch plus "freebore" my chamber had. I believe I burnt out the throat doing some load development.
I have two pre-64 Model 70's in .264 that need new homes. One is the initial one I bought in 1967 and the other is one I picked up in the 80's. Strange thing is they were close in serial numbers.

I know of a good home for them. :)

does that good home have any money?
-
They are both used, so reasonable prices for two pre-64's. The one with the shot out throat has had the barrel replaced with a take-off that had a good throat and was a shooter (per the seller)
You must not have my PM address as it's still empty.

130 NABs over Re-33. Sub-MOA all day.
